In just a short while, John Roberts will be confirmed as the next Chief Justice.

I will like to give a premature congratulations to soon-to-be Chief Justice Roberts as well as to the US Senate for conducting themselves in an honorable manner during the process.

While I don't much care for conservative justices, it is good to hear that the process was conducted in a professional manner, without petty politics coming into play.

Personally, I like the way that Ginsburg and Roberts stood their ground.

I like the idea that a judge is not a politician who makes promises to vote a certain way ALWAYS in order to get appointed.

Nice Margin. I hope he turns out to be a good decision, if only to irritate all the nay-sayers. :)

I bet they begin by overturning Women's Sufferage and outlawing the IRS and re-instituting the right to vote to property owners only, because all those things have been unconstitutional... :p

Roberts was an acceptable nominee.
Had the nominee been unacceptable, it would have been unprofessional, even a dereliction of duty, for the democrats to have permitted him to be confirmed.

Wow, didn't take long for that knee-jerk response. Here's one right back at ya:

Sorry, didn't notice the Dems delaying anything other than Roberts not giving a straight answer to any questions asked him.

Roberts is very professional, and is the best choice for being the next Supreme Court Justice.

BerkylvaniaYetAgain, nice left wing post. Luckily, quite a few democrats didn't agree with you. And luckily the Senate didn't follow such partisan crap as far as this vote was concerned.

Naturally. That's the whole point of the senate confirmations. I agree with you, and this goes for both sides of the aisle.

Not giving straight answers to direct questions is because of partisan crap?

Wow ... who knew?

Wow ... who knew?

Saying that you can't answer the question because it would prejudice future or current cases that you might rule on is a direct, straight answer.

Saying that you can't promise to uphold or destroy one precedent or another in exchange for getting appointed is a direct, straight answer.

Saying that you can't answer because you can't make a promise to uphold or destroy one political idea or another in exchange for getting appointed is a direct, straight answer.

I found him to be obviously far, far more intelligent than any of the Senators who questioned him.

He should be. He has argued before the Supreme Court dozens of times - and that's probably one of the most harsh questioning sessions anyone could go through.

The Senators are idiots by comparison.

Well, they studied law, i thought that meant they were trained to lie, obfuscate and generally maneuver away from the truth?

The Democrats aren't a party until they get their act together and therefore just rogue politicians. Besides, I didn't pay much attention - I was more interested in the Gomery Inquiry.

Hmm...a conundrum for me; I'd love seeing a SCOTUS full of us, but would that end the judicial activism that has so long been plaguing the Court?

Probably not. Consider that he's someone who has argued before the Supreme Court more than most others. Dozens of times.

His whole life has been predicated on law and precedent. Not on running for political office and making outlandish promises to support or decry issues like abortion, gun rights, etc. in order to get elected.

You would have to hang nearly everyone in the Senate and House.

He may be kind of conservative, but he seems an honest and apolitical choice. I like him. One leftist gives support to Chief Justice Roberts.

Honestly, that's an incredible idea! The only problem is, many Republicans are businessmen, so more Democrats would die.

Read the rest of my post and note that my response was in response to a knee-jerk "The Dems, by their mere existance, must be doing something to gum up the works" post. Because knee-jerk partisan responses are bad, m'kay?

I've never actually given my opinion about Roberts, but I'm sure you can formulate one for me since you're so eager to put words into my mouth.

There are several occupations where you can be routinely wrong, screw up, and most of the time, keep your job or get promoted.

1. Weatherman
2. Reporter
3. Lawyer
4. Doctor (that's why they call it practice)

Weathermen are quite obviously a government conspiracy. And have you noticed they've started spending more time telling us what the weather WAS today, not what they claim it's going to be?

Chief Justice Roberts. I better get used to that name. I may see it for the rest of my life. And you know what type of justice he's gonna be? An uber-centrist, inoffensive justice that trying to make everyone happy, and satisfying no one in the process.

I guess you were asleep during each dem-socialist senator's "questioning," more accurately described as political speeches followed by "gotcha"-type questions.

Of course, I couldn't blame you for falling asleep, seeing how boring the dem-soc politicians can be.
