The Scariest thing about this is that the vast majority of the violence occurs in the town of paisley which since it is still a town (despite being bigger than a number of scottish cities) gets lumped in with Glasgow making Glasgow the most violent city in the developed world per head of population.

Of course even in a nice affluent suburb like Newton Mearns (most affleunt electoral distict in scotland) i still have at least 2 of my 28 primary school class mates are in jail for firearms offences and another 3-4 have been in jail for various crimes including assault and GBH.

Er, probably not in Finland. Vikings were from Norway, Sweden and Denamark, though I'm sure a lot of finnish people are descendants from these countries.

Brought up in Glasgow, lived in Edinburgh for 17 years. I've never once been attacked, and have only seen a handful of streetfights in all that time.

Alcohol is involved in most cases, and the Finnish culture with respect to alcohol is getting totally shitfaced once a week. The Finnish societal ideals are stoicism and individualism. So, typically someone takes major shit from some asshole, and after being stoic for a while, just totally loses it and attacks with intent to kill. In other societies, the conflict would be defused before this happens.

Anyway, I'm American, but my father's Scottish and I can understand the "booze and blades culture."

Because not only is almost all of my father's family alcoholics, but he also once told me that at his town pub, every friday (or was it saturday?) they basically had a bar-room brawl... I forget what term he used... It was like... something something knock-down. I don't remember. But yeah, I guess it doesn't surprise that much. I just figured they were more civilized now.

Texas has its own senate, as do many other states here in America. Autonomy is not the same as independence.

And I looked it up: the United Nations does not recognize Scotland as independent. If Scotland is a nation, then the United Kingdom is not a nation.
