I cannot get my website to work. Everything I do seems to be making it more and more retarded. I swear to God the tech support guys are laughing at me. I mean seriously, look at my site (http://www.rotovia.com), it looks nothing like what it does in FrontPage. Infact it looks nothing like anything other than a deformed directory list... :(

If you open the postinfo page and view the source code, it has some instructions for setting up your site in FrontPage.

I hate front page, personally. I prefer to do everything myself... of course that's why I don't make web pages. There was one guy in my class (I take a computer course at college for coding and other stuff) that lived by front page and it took him twice as long to get anything done as it did for others who just used a basic text editor... including me, and I'm near retarded

Yeah, frontpage sucks if your really serious about your site. Learn your html. HERE (http://www.davesite.com/webstation/html/) is a really good site to learn from. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I appreciate the fact noone's gone "you're stupid to use the 'net... format your hardrive now".

Namely because this is the first time I have hosted my own website, or rather purchased a server twenty minutes from my house to host my website permanetly.

It's all a bit confusing for me.

The main thing to remeber when writing your own html code is to KEEP IT ORGANIZED. Because you WILL fuck up, and you will NEED to go back and figure out where. Just be patient, and you'll do fine!

My personal mantra is to think "what would Dr Zoidberg do?" then do the exact opposite.

And don't forget to make your page XML-Strict compliant! *polishes boot*

This page (http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_intro.asp) has an intro to CSS if you're interested. If you've ever noticed those pimped out Myspace pages that's what they use.

Hi Rotovia. I do host my own site & on my own equipment. I'd like to try to assist.

First off - is the computer that the web server resides on, & the computer that you are using to build the web page, different? If so you will have to find a way to move you web page to the correct location on the web server. Just "saving" it is not enough.

Second - once on the web server you need an "entry" web page that comes up by default. The name of this page varies by setup & software. You are using apache, so a good filename to start with as your "entry" page is: index.html

Third .... Something seems fishy about this particular web servers' setup. I should no be able to "see" the directory called "cgi-bin"
Are you also doing the setup & installation of the apache server? It may be set up correctly; but, is set to "service user home directories."

Personally...I prefer NotePad2 to all those jammies...

It has the color coding of Visual Studio without all the crap that goes along with it.

dreamweaver is a bitch to work out how to use when you're new to it, but a pretty good tool once you know what you're doing.
that said it does often throw me wobblies, which can get infuriating (like specifying the width of a table, it looks fine in the html, but the browser decides to do something completely different by itself... anyone know why the fuck it does that??)

and Rotovia, the probable answer to your problems is the index.htm thing (i would expect)

Welcome to the wide & wacky world of web design standards. I have found it a good idea to have available a handful of web browsers to review your work after you think you've finished. Mozilla / Firefox / IE 5,6,7,x / Lynx / AOL. Don't pay for AOL! Stay on good terms with someone else who has an account is all that is needed; all I ever needed. Word that I heard - MSN has its' own browser, not exactly IE, of a sort.
It's depressing to see. You try six different browsers and find your page rendered six different ways.
This testing method is a key tool-of-the-trade, even though it gives web designers the heeby-jeebies.

MM has the right idea. The server expexts to have a default file to open when the URL is specified as "/." It resides in the WWWroot folder and is usually named index.html, index.htm, or default.html. Otherwise, since this server allows directory browsing, you see the contents of the wwwroot folder.
