21 Years since civilization was nearly destroyed. We should really give this guy a monument.

Read about it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanislav_Petrov)

I agree. Very sobering to think that the only reason we're all alive today is because of him. And his reward: essentially fired from the military, and a life of poverty. :(

Now that's justice.
EDIT: and before someone else mentions it, it's 22 years.

So, he saves the world, and he gets an official reprimand for improper paperwork? No wonder the Soviet Union is dead.

Actually, I figured the announcement rather spoke for itself so I went on to tell other's about the Russkie Savior of Mankind :p

Very cool dude. Typical Military Shaftment. At least he didn't get terminally questioned in Siberia.

The Soviet Union personnel manning the nukes, and the USSR leadership showed impressive restraint several times over the Cold War. Had any of them lacked that restraint, none of us would be here.

Happy Stanislav Petrov Day, Comrades!

The 1983 incident is one of many mostly still-classified instances where the planet came to the brink of utter destruction without 99% of its population even knowing. Thanks to men like Petrov we are still here to even discuss this.

(soviet tech sucked in the 80s... it's only marginally better now)

Happy Stanislav Petrov Day, Comrades!

As we used to use as a toast when I had the fortune of beinglocked down in a hotel with my Soviet counterparts in te late 80s... "zhe de'ete ne sostradanya!" (Expect no mercy!) :p
