Nominations for the WORST band EVER!

Delator
26-09-2005, 16:43
I have decided, with all the music lovers that frequent General, that it is high time that we create a comprehensive listing of the worst bands of all time.

Essentially, the process will work like this...

Each person who wishes to may post ONE nomination for worst band ever, and also "second" ONE other nomination by another person.

In one week, I will tally the results, and the ten bands that recieved the mosts votes will be placed on a one week poll for all of NS to vote on.

The "winner" of that poll will recieve the dubious honor of being the worst band of all time.

You're not limited by genre...if you want to nominate Linkin Park, The Backstreet Boys, The Dixie Chicks or Coolio...it's up to you!

---

I shall humbly begin the process.

I nominate Nickelback*

*try to highlight your nominations, so I can find them easier when I tally results. :)

McFly.

It pains for me to even name them a band, even the worst one ever, becasue that puts them in a catergory shared by the greats like R.E.M, Tenacious D et cetera.

Comes as a close second to aqu, besides, britney is just as crappy, as both aqua and britney make This Song (http://gr.bolt.com/games/infogrames.mp3) sound like a Worldwide #1 hit.

their first record was really quite outstanding and their second one had some high points but since then......

....but i agree that it is hard to pick ONE and i also agree that the act should have some longetivity.

i picked hilt, but that's tongue-in-cheek. some of the worst bands ever that i can think of, in no particular order, would be:

inxs
white zombie (who are so terrible they're actually enjoyable)
the strokes
the a-team
gentle giant
yes
throbbing gristle (again, so terrible that it's fun)
the eagles
collins era genesis (surprised this hasn't shown up yet...)

iron maiden
van halen
emerson lake & palmer

Ok, ok. I would like to retract my nomination for Iron Maiden (although I won't retract my comments as I still agree with them :p )

Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder is as convincing as a rockstar as Alanis Morrisette....... oh, I feel their angst so much.

i'd have to agree that, over the last five or six years, pearl jam has become one of the worst acts ever...

BUT...

they did release a string of great albums - vs, vitalogy, no code & yield.

furthermore, i don't hear a lot of angst in vedder's lyrics....i don't really hear any at all, honestly. the angst thing was a cobain/corgan/reznor triangle. vedder & cornell were mostly political lyricists....

That's just it, niether do I. But I can hear him trying to put that sound of desperation into his voice. Where as with Cobain inparticular, he was just in a state of angst and it wasn't something he had to focus on too much (whether that angst was justified is up for debate, but I believe he genuinely felt it).

Insane Clown Posse have provided me with some entertainment in the past. They were at Woodstock 99, and I was amused by a corny, skinny teenage kid who was way too into them dancing his fool ass off while they "rapped". Also one of their songs was the intro music to the Ron and Fez radio show.

In defence of Limp Bizkit, they did have two songs that were half good, or enough to make one good song. The rest is nothing more than shit-covered shit with a shitty shit filling. EDIT: Ignore that. I was thinking of Linkin Park. Limp Bizkit suck.

Never heard McFly? To emulate their singing, put your tongue over your front teeth (but allow it freedom to move) and say "It's all about you".

Both Slipknot and SOAD are crap IMO. I have many common political views with the guys from SOAD, but the fact that they have good lyrics doesn't save them from being hurtful to my ears. I liked SOAD and Toxicity, but then they became worse and worse after those. Their last album is not worth listening at all.

So bad, so very very bad.

Second for Limp Bizkit.

The Phonics first album was passable. Limp Bizkit did a good song once (with Method Man, as i recall).

I nominate Lost Prophetz. For many musical reasons, but also because the lead singer once described Hollywood as "being like" Pontypridd (where i work). Which i hazard a guess it isn't.

Also, he tried the "do you know who i am?" trick to get to the front of a chip-shop queue, which is the moment where his delusions of star quality met with the grim reality of his life.

And if not Lost Prophetz, then HIM. Pentacles in videos to distract from the fact you sound like a bad Europe, nice trick. HARDCORE.

This I second. Awful band, stupid politics (honestly going to Cuba to release an album, sure is the land of the free there) and not half as smart as they think they are.

Their politics are generally more of the gut feeling thing than actual well thought out manifestos. Coming from the same area, i tend to share a lot of the gut politics they do.

However, the Manics do remain an awful band, and they are actually not a tenth as clever as they think they are. They claimed to be followers of both Sartre AND Camus for chrissakes, when the two had diametrically opposing world views. Bless.

Leningrad Cowboys -- and why:

Officially speaking, the Leningrad Cowboys. Aki Kaurismäki directed the Leningrad Cowboys movies, where the band was officially the worst band in the world. This is how the real band actually started, as a group of fictional movie characters. I think they'll inherit the title.

They have their own designated hairstyle (senselessly big pompadours), and they've performed with the Red Army Choir.

From their site:" Timmy | Bass - Known also as "Tolu" which comes from a hobby related to a certain detergent. This also explains why he became a bass player."

I'll take the Village People for the best in that category...followed by Wham, and buried deep down in the earth is Rush.

Remember though...we're talking about the worst bands...so best in this sense only means "I'd rather poke my eyes out" instead of "listening to that would cause me to immediately jump into a lake of boiling sheep piss to escape".

To whoever nominated the Manics, go listen to the Holy Bible, come back, and apologise. One of the greatest albums ever.
Can't think who to nominate...Metallica maybe...hmmm...Coldplay...U2. Not so much bad as totally overrated. Here we go:
The Kaiser Chiefs. Utter f--king w--k. F--king sellout b-st-rds. Can't write a decent song to save their worthless asses.

Right...have you actually listened to 4st 7lbs, or This Is Yesterday? It's an album driven by the issues surrounding the band members at the time they wrote it, as well as a general ill-feeling among them about the general world political climate at the time. It's no good just listening to it - make yourself aware of at least some of the band's basic history first.

Yes, i am aware of the "issues" surrounding the band at the time. Given where i am from (South Wales) and how old i am (33), i've been aware of them since their New Art Riot EP in 1989, ta, and seen them 3 times (each time, not through choice, either i went to see someone else and they were on the bill, or in the case of the Manic Millennium, i went because i was going out with a Manics fan). And i understand what you are saying but, sadly, the Manics lyrics are bad sixth form poetry AT BEST. Richey couldn't write lyrics to save his life, and the music veers between sub standard hair metal and sub standard grunge rock on the first three albums. Their return, sans Richey, sounds like a shitier version of Queen or Foreigner, all glossy and heavily produced. Sadly, still the same bad lyrics.

Answer your question?

Blink 182.

Twisting punk rock into an unlistenable mass of whining voices and annoying melodies is bad enough...

But becoming massively popular, and then using this influence to totally change the definition of punk is inexcusable. Punk is now conformity.

EDIT- Oh, and I should mention the unfunny "humour". They have a video entitled "The Urethra Chronicles", an album entitled "Enema of the State" and a song called "They Came to Conquer...Uranus". I might laugh if I were 10 years old again.

To be fair, Good Charlotte is worse musically, but Blink were there first. The Offspring and Greenday deserve some credit for destroying punk too, but their early work was actually okay (and exemplary in the case of the Offspring)

What is with the two guys intent on bashing Maiden? There are bands far far worse than they ever were, even with Blaze Bailey.

Second ICP, Hanson, Aqua, Maroon 5.

I've also got to mention 'My Chemical Romance'. They've just popped up recently and they are just so utterly shit. They look like a bunch of goth/green day wannabes and they scream incoherent bullshit that no one cares about.

Musically they're shit as well.

Some of these need to be considered in the context of their times. It would be hard to consider a band as crap if they sold millions of records - yes, I'm an old fart.

inxs - danceable, fun, and oh so irrelevant.

white zombie (who are so terrible they're actually enjoyable) NOT!

the strokes - agree

the a - team never heard of 'em

gentle giant - yes - elp - collins era genesis - outstanding musicians all. Some great stuff; surely not candidates for this list. if you include these bands, you must also include Floyd.

throbbing gristle - never heard of 'em

the eagles - don't agree

the grateful dead - highly overrated (so is Phish) but still not a candidate for worst

green day - disagree

the village people - definitely cringe inducing

guns 'n' roses - Axl Rose is an asshole

metallica - full of themselves

megadeth and iron maiden - even more so

warrant - ratt - poison - to innocuous to be truly bad

van halen - Yeah. Well. Okay. Never cared one way or the other.

frontline assembly - leatherstrip - metric - who?

the beegees - which era? Some good songs.

the bangles - the b-52s - guilty pleasures

aqua - dreck

rammstein - pure, unadulterated garbage. Du hast mich? Ja.

wham! - why not condemn the entire decade of the '80's? Then again...

the chemical brothers - high suck factor, indeed.

oasis - more to be pitied than hated...

blur - who?

the monkees - come on, it was a TV show! Michael Nesmith was a helluva songwriter.

aerosmith - consider their entire corpus, but I really haven't liked anything since Rocks.

I don't think that bands which revel in their tackiness can count. besides, I love the Leningrad Cowboys.

I think the best guage for how awful a band truly is lies in the number of fans who are now deeply, deeply ashamed of themselves for liking the band. As such, some consideration should be given to KISS and Hootie and the Blowfish.

ICP definitely gets a vote from me, but mostly for the sake of their fans who take them seriously. I think they're retards, and musically D- students, but on the right day they can be funny. Just don't date any ICP girls. They're weird. Don't ask.

It's not mandatory to like the message in order to like the music. And I consider that MSI is not to be taken seriously when it comes down to lyrics.

A bit off-topic: To be more specific with my views I guess I can be called a leftist anarcho-libertarian. There are very few civil issues over which I don't have liberal views, especially having to do with law enforcment. I consider the death penalty the right option in certain cases, for example people convicted for mass murder, rape, child molesting or addictive drugs traffic.

None of the bands nominated are the worst band ever. How can I be so sure of this?

Because so far, no one has nominated Burzum. If you do not believe that Burzum could be worse than all the bands listed here before, you should try listening them, just to hear how mind-bogglingly bad it is. The guitar, bass and drums repeat the same (badly produced) monotonous line for 6 to 9 minutes, the vocals sound like the guy is getting raped by an elephant while simultaneously having his genitals bitten off by a pit bull, and the lyrics are all Neo-Nazi fascist bullshit as an added bonus. That band is so bad that its music isn't even funny, it's simply painful to listen to. I regret having to use the words "band" and "music" to describe it.

After Burzum, I'd say that Darkthrone is the worst band, although, Dark Cathedral is really bad too. The Guilty Bystanders also make Blink 182 look like hardcore, uncompromising punk.

I second Limp Bizkit, though, they have perfected the art of sounding simply obnoxious.

the WORST band of the 20th century, possibly of ALL TIME!

for those of you who are of tender years pardon this sample

Yummy Yummy Yummy I got love in my tummy!

Those of you who have been on this planet as long as I have will have unfond memories of this song.
Even thinking of it puts me in a mood to kill things and break people!

Have pondered very long about this question...but now: Modern Talking, yes, someone had to bring it up. I already feel bile piling up in my stomach by simple having to type that words :gundge:

You nominated Pearl Jam and Green Day (although: ok, Green Day's last single does suck)? What is wrong with you people?
And Radiohead? And the Manic Street Preachers? Again, what is WRONG with you?

Am I a lone voice on this forum in saying that I like their first two albums?Apparently not. Unfortunately, a lot of people like(d) Korn's first two albums.

I actually enjoyed many of the songs on "Follow the Leader" as well, although that was definetly the beginning of a titanically enormous descent into suckitude.

Oh, and since nobody else has actually done so yet, I'm going to "second" RUSHYou like Korn but dislike Rush? *Gets a headache from trying to comprehend the incomprehensible.*

I nominate Led Zeppelin, my least favorite band everI'll second this. Not because Led Zeppelin is the worst, they're actually quite average. But it gives me the chance to point out that they're the most overrated band. :D If it had been Pink Floyd, it'd be the same, except that they're the second most overrated band.

Don't care for most of his songs and those that I do like are ruined by his singing. If you can't sing, don't. If you can't play your instruments, don't. The world would be much safer from insidious "earworms" if these rules were followed.Rules for music? Now I have two headaches from trying to comprehend the incomprehensible.

It's not mandatory to like the message in order to like the music. And I consider that MSI is not to be taken seriously when it comes down to lyrics. It depends. If you buy the CD in a used CD store, or download it for free, then that's fine, because you're not actually giving the artist in question any money. But if you buy the CD new, or go to their concerts, then you are supporting their views (by giving them money.) So why would someone support views that they not only don't agree with, but find repugnant? (This question isn't necessarily to you, but is just a question I wanted to ask and finally got the chance to.)
As far as MSI's lyrics go, I'm not sure if they're serious or not, but it is quite common to refer to women as "bitches" and so I assumed that they were being serious.

After Burzum, I'd say that Darkthrone is the worst band,I don't speak Norwegian, and I was wondering if you did, so you could tell me if Darkthrone had the same abhorrent neo-Fascist lyrics as Burzum. (Their songs that I've heard in English aren't Fascist, but the Norwegian ones might be.)

So far it's ICP (is anyone suprised?)

Only a very little bit. People generally have a lot more fun disliking somone they haven't actually listened to. ICP's not my favorite or anything, but they do produce a solid product and a lot of thier crap is -seriously- funny.

Anyhow. It seems logical to me that you can't nominate someone who's already been nominated. That would be a second, no matter what you called it. So, yeah... I guess I'll second Hanson. That crap gives me tumors.

For an original nomination? There are just so many. I'd dearly love to say U2... I hate that ugly, arrogant, self serving rat bastard Bono, and "hate" is a word I use entirely sparingly... But, even I have to admit some of their songs are pretty good.

I'm gonna say Stryper, with the caveat that I really mean basically any and all of those xtain rocker slags. I got no patience for anyone who tries to shove their offensive religious drek down my throat, and anyone - real or imaginary - that insists I bow down and worship him is offensive.

You're leaving out some quite good music. POD? Kings X (esp their early stuff.)

I have a hard time equating *presenting* with *shoving* That being the case, anything anyone spews that I disagree with is being "shoved down my throat."

That would include your opinion.

Besides, last I checked you were given free will. God doesn't require your worship; so feel free not to worship.

I second Britiny Spears(who I call Demon Spwan) and would like to add Shania Twain or Celine Dion. Any one of those 3 singers my brain freezes and screams to me "make it stop. I'll confess just make it stop".

I second Simple Plan

For the simple fact I haven't thought of anyone quite so horrible...

And I didn't second Blink because although they are responsible for the creation of pop punk, they at least have some talent. For what they wanted to do and for what they did they were pretty true to themselves. And that at least gives them a worthwhile reason to not be the worst band ever. Furthermore, being the creater of entire genre, in my eyes, eliminates them from being the worst band ever.

On the back of one of Darkthrone's albums (or somewhere on the record sleeve), on the original print, it said, in big bold letters: "Norsk Arysk Black Metal"

That translates to "Norwegian Aryan Black Metal"

I don't think that leaves much room for doubt, although I'm told that on more recent prints, it says "True Norwegian Black Metal." In any case, their sound is intolerable.

I think a lot of you misunderstand what WORST BAND EVER means.

It doesn't mean the band you, for whatever reason, you don't like very much. It doesn't even mean the band you loathe with a passion. It means the band that, harmonically, rythmically, and lryically could not play their way out of a box made of air. You guys are making whatever really is the worst band ever seem a lot less so because of all the not-that-bad (or just plain awesome) bands you're nominating.

Well instead of being critical, you could actually nominate a band that distinctly and universally lacks harmony, rhythm, and lyrical quality.

They hardly qualify as the worst. Go listen to Dookie. There are hundreds of popular albums out there worse than that.

I'll take the Village People for the best in that category...followed by Wham, and buried deep down in the earth is Rush..

bwahahahahahaha!

so, it's 1978 and there are three shows happening in town.....there's some event that forces you to see a show....i don't know why you HAVE to see a show but you do....

you'd rather go dance it up with the village people than sit through a rush concert? have you ever seen a guy play keyboards with his hands, bass with his feet and sing all at the same time?

nope....to hell with that....you're gonna throw on them dancin' shoes and starting shouting out some acronyms....

bwahahahahahahaha.....

But I think Ohio Express is the worst band of the modern era and I am surprised no one else realizes how bad they reek!

Bullshit. Aenima is easily one of the best albums of the 90's. Lateralus is a bit overrated, but Undertow and Opiate are also great.

Lateralus is good, though. Undertow is really great. "Disgustipated" is just... damn.

I can see how people might not like Tool, but I honestly don't see how anyone could think that they're the WORST band EVER.

I would have to say my band is the worst one ever because it consists of no members and has never even performed a song. All the other bands mentioned are much better than mine because they at least have enough popularity to be recognised by more than one person.

Then no one would ever play a musical instument. People aren't, as a rule, born virtuosos. You have to go through a period of playing it badly before you ever get any good at it. Some progress faster than others, but that's true of anything. One of the things that improves you in a hurry is playing live in front of a crowd. You may get booed now and then, but you'll also get better real quick!

Voice, on the other hand, is a subjective thing. What's painful to your ears may be quite melodious to another's. Many people love Bob Dylan's voice, which is great for me, as I imitate him quite well. :p

McFly.

It pains for me to even name them a band, even the worst one ever, becasue that puts them in a catergory shared by the greats like R.E.M, Tenacious D et cetera.

McFly are comfortably better than Tenacious D, it's really good pop music
