The Greatest Prime Minister Britain Never Had

Although I'm a Russian, I've always been interested in the politics of the United Kingdom. Having read the thread concerned with the greatest Prime Minister, I've noticed that it is quite hard to choose the most important and efficient leader among the PMs of 1951-2000.

It seems reasonable to me to ask who of the unsuccessful candidates could have been the towering figure of this political period. I've chosen severl possible options for the poll, which, I think, should be confined to the citizens of the United Kingdom.(I deny the vote even to myself! :))

What a good idea for a poll-given some of the people we have had, it throws the limitations of FPTP and party politics in general into stark relief.

I voted "other" because of poor John Smith. He was a man who could have presented a credible, and at least partially trustworthy Labour party to the country, and who had a broad trust across UK politics.

Of the list you mentioned, I would love to say Tony Benn, as again he was an honest, thoughtful and courageous man, but in reality he would have been a disaster as PM, and I suspect ould be one of the few politicians who, in his heart of hearts, probabl;y wouldn't have wanted the job.

What do you think about Iain Macleod?

I really only place him with the lung cancer thing. I suppose he could have been okay, he was supposed to have had a reasonable grasp of economics,
