New Computer
What do you think? Originally, I was going for cheap (under 600) but I quickly broke that as people kept telling me to get stuff thats jsut a little better, and in the end I said to hell with it, and I will get these parts and build it. Only thing I can't choose is the case, I dunno what to go with.

I have no idea what's going on with my computer anymore. I was half way through working out how to use one of my networked computers for extra diskpace when I started converting it into a server... no I have three computers that randomly disconnect each other from my ADSL and result in rotovia.com (http://www.rotovia.com) going spaz... I'm not sure how that's relivant...

You do not need to spend another $69 dollars on a power supply. Your case comes with a 420 Watt power supply. You probably won't need those 30 extra Watts. Your system will probably use about 340-350Watts. So even if you factor in 50 Watts for upgrades you should be safe.
I'm worried about the link for the CPU the AMD Anthlon 64 3500+ runs at 2.2GHz not the 1GHz your link says.

1GHz refers to the FSB.
And he should spend more on the power supply. I would recommend at least 500 watts for what he has.
Stock PSUs tend to burn out easier, from what I'm told and in my (limited) experience). I was told that I should get a better power supply, and get a different case. I dunno, cheaper is better. If I can cut that extra hundred bucks I could easily get a better graphics card.

From personal experience.. I relied on a stock PSU that was 420 watts. It burned out, and ruined my motherboard and CPU. Don't let this happen to you. Get the better PSU. It could save you a lot of anger and stress later. The 6800 video card you originally stated is excellent enough..

While visiting www.extremetech.com I can across a link to a site that would calculate the Watt usage of a PC (I can no longer find the link to the site). I entered the hardware for the computer I was planning on buying (it had the same hardware) and was given a Watt usage of just below 340. My friend recently bought a computer with the same hardware except for a 3700+ CPU and a Geforce 7800GT video card. He uses the 450 Watt power supply that came with the Sonata II case and has not had any problems with it.

You do not want to go with the bare minimum. That's dangerous and can put your system at risk. Like me there are other components that suck up a lot of power. The minimum I could do for my machine is 400 watts. But I have a 580 watt power supply. I do not recommend the generic power supply provided with the case. I bought my own seperately. Also, the wattage isn't everything. There are voltage ratings on the power supply itself that can make the world of a diference.
I'd probably get this case instead.

Too bad my computer PSU isn't at the bare minimum, causing it to burn out. Then I could make my mom by a new one. Seeing as the computer is 4 years old I do not think this is the case. I am suprised thou that HP managed to pick one componant of the computer right.
I dunno what to do, my boyfriend is going to kill me and so is my mother if she ever finds out I got 2 thousand in student aid instead of 1 thousand like I said. I only wanted to spend 400, and I think I got a little outa hand.

I happen to be a (nearly certified) tech.
Good choices.
Especially the video card.
Newegg usually has some good deals.
Im assuming you checked out Pricewatch.com?
However, if you plan to run a bunch of peripherials, like a printer, scanner, etc...you may want a power supply bigger than 450watts.
I would go with at least a 500watt, just to be on the safe side.
It wouldnt cost much more.
Asus boards are nice.
I use a p4p800s myself.
I also, have the same RAM. Corsair valueselect.
Not the highest end RAM, but its sure good enough to do anything that I need it to, and I run a gaming machine.
As far as cases go, beware some of the lower end models.
I bought mine, with a side door, and lights, and lighted power supply, for about 38 bucks.
Sadly, you get what you pay for and the power supply puked in 6 months, and the case rattles a bit.
A tad annoying at times.
But it looks nice!

I've decided to splurge and get an eVGA 7800GT instead. I figure, I'm dead anyway - might as well go all out. I'm probably going to order the system this week, when the check actually gets here.
As for the case, I really want one of those Thermaltakes but I don't know which one.
I don't have a printer or scanner. Just the computer, and my monitor is going to be my 27" tv.

If you're gonna use your TV, then the souped up vid card won't make much of a difference. The nice thing about running stuff thru the TV, is you can run it at very low resolution.

That is a nice card, but its also a PCIX card.
Wich means, that its only works in a motherboard with a pcix slot.
Not all motherboards on the market are using pcix slots.
Many still use AGP slots.
so when buying a video card, make sure you know what kind of architecture your motherboard has.

Invest in an s-video cable then.
It will help you get back some of the resolution you'll lose form using a tv.

I have many years of experience building and fixing PCs. I concur with what others have said, you want a stronger power supply. Get the best one you can afford, they are quite inexpensive and you'll want to give your PC room to grow. Ive seen many PCs ruined because of a power supply that just couldnt handle the strain.
The case you choose is irrelevant unless you have special demands (a case that is easy to carry (for lan parties), a case with extra noise shielding (for sleeping next to), tempest shielding (to keep large government agencies or very savvy hackers from spying on you), lots of fans for overclocking, etc.). Otherwise, its all about the looks and personal prefference (personally, I preffer large cases that give me room to fiddle around with the insides for when Im changing cards or adding memory or hard drives or whatever).
Running on a laptop right now :D Getting a desktop though because I'm a true gamer and can't do that on this laptop :(
I still have my 19" monitor, I might break that out (it's just sitting on my desk). I haven't decided.

I'm a poor man, so please don't lead me into temptation. If I get a second job, I won't have time to drool over my soon-to-be cabinet ;)

Do a background check on any merchant you discover through pricewatch, froogle, or any other such search engine. There are many unscrupulous businesses out there.
