A giant Space Goat is going to eat your planet.

The entire population is going to escape in three spaceships called Arks.

Into the first Ark, all of the great thinkers and leaders of the world will be.
Into the second Ark, those with labor skills(carpenters, steelworkers, electricians, etc.)
Into the third Ark, will be the service classes. Hairdressers, Telephon sanitizers, Sales representatives, etc.

The third ark will be sent off first. The other two will be sent shortly thereafter.

I'd hope they let me on the first one, cuz I lack any sort of labour skills, nor am I very good at providing hair cuts...but I do study at Uni and try and get reasonable marks, so maybe that qualifies me as a "great thinker"..?

If I had to leave, I'd go on the 1st. That being said, it'd be awfully dull.

I'd take the third ark because being wiped out by a plague transmitted via dirty telephone doesn't suit my plans. Whereas getting to completely dominate/destroy an inferior culture/species that I accidentally interact with and steal their land would be just about perfect.

Hmmmm...I'd build a 4th ark for useless people like me.

So I'd stow away on the first one.

I'd say I am very distressed at the dishonesty of my fellow NSers. For one, why am I the only one who voted for ark 3? And I sincerely doubt that over 50% of the NS General population really qualifies as "great thinkers." "Great Liars", maybe, but "great thinkers" is a bit high and mighty for people whose 3 greatest interests topics of debate are:

Sex
George Bush
Jesus (Real or Fake or Gay)

And then proceed to conduct these debates in a language consisting almost exclusively of smilies. Tut, tut, self-delusion is still just as common a past time as ever on the Interweb.

3rd, so I can be one of the ancestress' of Earth :p

Or in reality (whatever that is)... 2nd so there's lots of useful people around ;)

I picked first ark. I'm majoring in physics, that has to be worth something.

Though since in hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy, the third ark was sent out as a way to get rid of the useless people and the others ended up dying of a plague spread by unsanitary telephones (if I remember correctly) perhaps being on the ark of useless people would be better.

Hrm...I could wave my fellowship papers and get on the 2nd ark with my tradesman boyfriend...OR...we could get on the third ark (which leaves first) based on my current actual profession in financial services if my boyfriend still has a paystub from his old restaurant job.

Ideally we would get on the third ark though, if I am gonna be adrift in space I want to be on the ship with the bartenders and cocktail waitresses and go-go boys and sex-trade workers and stewardesses. Clearly the most important thing when being confined in small spaces for long periods is good looks, nice bodies, and people who smell good at all times. This = ark #3.

While it would provide short-term amusement to be on the first Ark, I'd rather be on the second Ark for its practicality.

How useful would it be in the long run to live on ark 1, with all the hot-air-filled politicians trying to wrestle themselves into the new world government? How useful are philosophers going to be when it comes to designing and constructing a new irrigation system? They'd all die after a few months upon reaching a new planet (and thats if they dont declare war on each other first).

Ark 3 would suffer the same fate, since the skills the service class is geared towards service. Hairdressers and janitors would be in the same situation as the ivory tower professors and D.C. power players: utterly useless.

Ark 2 would be stocked with people who would have the skills to rebuild civilzation's basic infrastructures and food supplies (this is based on my assumption that farmers count towards the labor sector.) All the other skills that would be on the other arks (philosophy, political know-how, basic services) can be relearned easily. Labor skills can't, at least not without lots and lots of trial and error.

Hm, I'd probably be put on the 1st ark since I'm a scientist, but I might try to talk my way into the 2nd. The first will probably be stuffed with polititions and others who don't know how to do anything practical. When we are colonizing a new world they are the last thing we need. But the second would have the skilled workers, and with me onboard they would have at least one leader/thinker type to dirrect them.

I don't care if I die from unsanitary teliphones. It can't be worse then being stuck in a spacecraft with the types in the 3rd ark.

None of them. I will be too busy running my Giant-Space-Goat hologram projector and selling Ark-rides.

I imagine that it's the politicians deciding who qualifies as a "great thinker", and what do you know? Turns out that includes politicians :p

I'd go on Ark #2. As an Artist, I could bamboozle my way onto Ark #1, but who wants to die of the plague surrounded by a bunch of hot air spouting egomaniacs?

Similarily, I could go on Ark#3, but those are the people I spend my life trying to avoid. Life without Telemarketers, Insurance Agents and Lawyers is worth death by phone infection a couple decades later.

Nope. #2 is where I'd go. I've picked up a lot of skills over the years as a result of being a sculptor (anything to do with metalwork, casting metal, mouldmaking) The thought of dying of a plague while surrounded by those with skills (ie: Doctors) while not pleasant, is much more appealing than spending my time dying surrounded by stupid, useless people, or a bunch of people who have the gall to consider themselves among "the best and the brightest".

if ever the toilets got backed up on any of the arks you'd want to be on ark #2! That's where I would be!

I could probably get onto any of the three Arks, but I would more likely choose to stay behind and drive a Porsche for my last moments on Earth.

#2. I may not be skilled at manual labour (though I could adapt), but if something goes wrong and we have to crash land on a desolate planet, those are the people I want around.

Now...if i were allocated to an ark rather than choosing, i'm in trouble. I am a university student. I haven't dignified myself as a great thinker (and i'm not likely to), I have no manual labour skills, and I have not worked full-time in a service industry - so no skills there. In reality, i'd probably be left behind.

Oh well.

Why would it be dull? Surely 'great thinkers' covers creative genii (plural of genius) as well. Just think how FUN it would be if every creative genius in the world was on one Ark!
