I'm sure alot of them enlisted because they support the war.

I'm in the Air Force ROTC so I'm not active duty but I will be in a couple years. Personally, I don't support the war at all. I won't debate it, I won't give my reasons, because that's not the question. But I do feel that I have a duty to my country, and it is my COUNTRY that I support.

Think of it this way. When you're dating someone, do approve of and agree with every single thing they do and say? No. But you love and support them anyway. That's what I feel toward my country. It is my duty to support the US, even if I don't like the reasons we are there.

I obviously can't speak for others, especially not for those fine young men and women serving right now, but for me it was a multitude of reasons: a desire to serve my Country, an attempt to see if I was suited to a military career, a desire to see the world, a need to be part of something greater than myself, and a way to avoid the draft by volunteering first.

BAH! Countries are usually spoken of in the feminine. I'm a woman. I am straight. Therefore, I think of the USA as a very good friend, not a significant other. So that clarifies that. *Grin*

Oh, I apologise.

Oops, I already put it in my blog! I hope this doesn't ruin my friendship with Germany, (The Fatherland, get it?) or Mother Russia...

Haha, you're insane. So if Mother Russia and Father Germany had children, who would they be? Poland?

Only to take this to its hypothetical extreme: When would the buck stop with you? Where is the point where you'd say "My country might want me to do this, but I won't, it's just too far beyond my ethics."?

I think if it got to the point where they were doing something near to the Holocaust. Though you ask a very good question. I think it's one of those things that I'd just have to go with the situation.

Fair enough.
So, just to really push it, how would you treat the possibility of civilian "collateral damage"?
Would you throw a grenade into a house with a family in it, because you suspect the father is an insurgent and sits near the window with a gun?

See, that's why I didn't join the Army. They're the ones who do all that. In the Air Force, I'm more behind the scenes. So I won't have to make that decision. But if I did have to decide...I'd rather we storm the house than just throw a 'nade in there. That way we could arrest just the bad guy and spare the family.

Although (I don't know if you've seen the footage), there was that helicopter that was hovering around at night time and then shot two guys cold-blooded to the command "smoke 'em"

Seriously, look at it.

That being said though...I'm not sure whether a chopper like that would actually be part of the air force :D

Hum, I'm not versed enough yet in what branch owns what sort of machines, so I couldn't tell you who that was. BUT, I won't be flying because my vision isn't good enough. So I'll be more in the background. So there. ;)

Ditto. It's not easy to tell from just the sound, but that sounds like a chain-gun, which would probably make the helicopter an AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter. Wicked.

Ah-64. The angle of the view, the explosions caused by the rounds, the stability of the camera and the rate of fire all give me to believe that it is the 30mm chain gun (not to be mistaken with gattling or minigun). Unless someone found a large calibre full automatic anti tank rifle and mounted a full night vision system complete with rangefinder on a building somewhere.

Doubt it was a ground vehicle.

Ahem. Anyway. Like I said, I feel a duty to my country even though I don't necessarily agree with the reasons being the war.
