So, the newest addition to the civilization series of computer games, CIV4, is due out in late october. I know quite a few people here are fans of the game. So, do you play it? Are you planning to buy the new one? Personally, though not that into computer games, I definitely will.

*gasp*

I love Civilization!

The only thing is my computer is a couple years old plus I have school and civilization is addictive so I won't get any work done.

That will be my present to myself when I'm all done school, I think.

Hell yes I am. I'll be the first one in line outside Wal-Mart the morning it's released. Then I'll lock myself in my house, take the phone off the hook, and play the stuffing out of that game for, like, a week. Of course I'll have a bunch of work to do after a week of slacking, but until then it'll be bliss.

ha...that made me smile...

anyway, sorry to hear that you'll be going on radiation...it's a bitch (never had to do it myself, but have watched many people go through it). The cool thing about it was that my friend who got cancer at age 16 became so interested in what she was going through, that she studied nuclear medicine untill the day she died. I hope you go in with an attitude something like that, but best of luck with the treatment, and hell, might as well get some entertainment while you rest up. Civilization will take up plenty of time. There have been many nights where I "forgot" to do work or go to bed at a decent hour because I "just wanna do this one thing. And then this. And this and this and this and this"

I sometimes play civ 2, but I refuse to buy 3 or any other game until I get a decent computer. After that, I'm getting Civ 4.

And good luck with the radiation thing, Eut. You gotta get better, else you wont become the president of the U.S.

I'll consider buying it. But only if the balance is perfect, and it's got even more depth. Otherwise I'll stick with my shallow but actionier RTS games or civ 2 and Alpha Centauri.

The first PC game I got totally addicted to was Civ 1, with the cheesy graphics and sound and usually retarded AI but it was fun. I later bought Civ 2 and well it was good but lacked something and didn't work right until a patch (stupid AEGIS cruisers). Skipped CIV3 but I might check out number 4. I kinda miss the game.

Something tells me you'd be awesome at civ. :)

Well if you want info/strategies/whatever regarding civ, I like this site -

It's got all sorts of resources, and a substantial section devoted to civ IV.

Civ3, and the epanxsions conquests and PTW are the best games invented easily. I will buy civ4 definitly.
Its not really create a government, so much as a country.

Whenever I play Civ 3 I have trouble getting up an doing anything. I think I have sat and played it for 12 hours straight before. I'm ususally not the kinda guy who can play games for so long. It was ridiculous and I will definately buy Civ 4. It looks sweet.

Argh! I've just started playing another Civ3 game and then a couple days later, my computer died and now it's getting fixed. I can hardly wait for Civ4, though I think I'll have to trek to the Netherlands to actually get it in English...

I loved the original Civ but I was very disappointed with a later version I played. I thought that once technology and political systems had advanced enough it would be possible to get beyond nationalism and win through cooperative stategies on trade, pollution, space exploration, etc. Instead the game seemed to want me to splat enemies with big mechs instead. How unimaginative!

What I was disappointed about in Civ3 was that they took out the five advisors that they had in Civ2 :(.

I played Civ 3 and really, really liked it, so I'm probably going to buy Civ 4 as well, unless my sad economy forces me to wait until Christmas.

From what I’ve heard, Civ 4 will have a new shiny alliance feature with shared research, line of sight and so on, so you probably don’t have to obliterate your fellow civilizations unless you feel like it. :)

Also, the other nations now have to recognize your borders and don't just pass through your territory time and time again after you tell them to stop.

I think the most interesting and exciting new concept in it is the religious aspect.

7 Religions you can discover by discovering certain technologies!!! Also if you and another civilization have the same religion, you'll get along trade and diplomatic wise.

I am also looking forward using UN resolutions too!

Though no corruption seems seems kind of sub-realistic to me, I guess I would like that too...nothing more unnerving than no ability to grow because you won´t benefit from it.

My marriage has barely recovered from Civ 3!!

I remember Civ 1 when I was at school, used to be up until 4am moving each piece.
Call to Power waqs crap though!!
I hope they bring back Wales (could play them in CTP) and not just bundle us under Celts or Even better have Ancient Britons, so I can squash the saxon scum!!

...good times. :)"Waste" was worse in Civ3 because the only real way to prevent the metropolises I just captured from revolting was by building your own cultural buildings. And that takes ages when production is limited to 1 shield per turn.

I think Civ4 comes out in the UK on the 24th March, which is less than a week before my birthday... So I just wait for the big payoff, then I'm in Civland! Two days later, Spring Break! 60 hour gaming sessions await! Hurrah!
Civ4, and two weeks to play it non-stop. This is all the proof for the existence of God I will ever need.
Although, it seems possible the that one that is encouraging my despotic tendancies is Satan... whatever.

I hope they bring back pyramids. I always got pyramids at the first opportunity. The ability to benefit from a democracy government in peacetime then convert to some other, more bellicose government style in wartime was priceless!

In CivII the statue of liberty allowed you to switch between governments, I remember stealing it from a fellow nation using nuclear weapons, then changing to fundamentalism...just like real life :D and the pyramids gave you granaries in CivII and III.

I didn´t like in CivIII that you could not benefit from a conquered wonder...makes no sense to me

The problem with nuclear wars is...the loosers don´t clean up their pollution ;)Even when it was a tie, they'd never do it. I'd have hordes of workers or engineers swarming across the completely railroaded expanse of my empire keeping pollution down, and then I'd get global warming because my neighbors couldn't clean up!

Civ 4 is looking pretty damn good. They've adopted the great government system that Alpha Centauri had, where instead of set governments like Democracy and Communism, you have different choices for various aspects of your civilisation. I'm not sure what the aspects are this time, in AC it was government, economy, values and future society.

I hope they've improved the corruption though, it was pretty ridiculous in Civ 3. Cities about 1 screen away from your capital had pretty much zero producitivity, which isn't realistic or fun.

I'm getting it, though probably for Christmas... I need my FPS fix :mp5:.

BTW, you can indeed create your own govenment in Civ 4 by doing stuff like appropriating freedoms. There IS religion, but no religion has any advantage over each other. Every one is the exact same thing, the MAIN advantage is that two nations of the same religion would get along better.

I think that you gain religions by researching them, and if you are the first to develop a religion, one of your cities becomes the founding city.

Do you mean that you can see everything that happens in their nations? Is it ongoing?

I definitely like the idea of having religion in Civ, although I can see why they were a bit nervous about touching it. Making them all identical is a good idea since there seems to be plenty of customisation as it is.

I love Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri - so much so, in fact, that I practically consider it the 'true' sequel to CivII rather than the (in my eyes) inferior CivIII.

And don't even get me started on Call to Power.

So, if Civ number IV is more like SMAC and less like CivIII, I'll probably buy it.

And if a Alpha Centauri II ever hits the shelves, I'm gonna die with a smile on my face.

Barbarian invasion? Eh... I don't even know if I'll touch it. Another unoriginal expansion that is precisely the same as the other 2. Shogun (Mongol invasion), Medieval (Viking invasion) and Rome (barbarian invasion)

Each one basically adds a landless, incredibly powerful faction. Nothing new.

I'll stick with the precious total realism mod...
