The great flip flop thread

Why is it that Democrats call Bush a liar, and state that they are right and he is wrong? Why do they deny sharing the same views as him? If these aren't flip flops, I don't know what is! Please share your own famous flip flops, or express your views on why they aren't flip flops at all.

"Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power."
- Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002 Source (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/transcripts/gore_text092302.html)

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction."
- Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002 Source (http://kennedy.senate.gov/~kennedy/statements/02/10/2002A07621.html)

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members ... It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons."
- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002 Source (http://clinton.senate.gov/speeches/iraq_101002.html)

It's really early (2:00 PM, hey it's early for me), I'm tired, I'm in my pajamas, so I'm not going to venture into this debate farther than this post, and I'm also going to defend the democrats...which I don't like to do because I don't like that party...Although I don't dislike them as much as the Republican agenda.

That said, These quotes were from 2002. This was when the intelligence, which was proved faulty, was pointing to them having WMDs. After searches, and going to war, we have not yet found any WMDs or evidence of them since when we made them give them up. The evidence they had was faulty intelligence and many democrats later admitted that said intelligence was faulty and that they were wrong. A very redundant paragraph, but I'm tired.

Your missing my point. They said Iraq was a threat, Bush said it was a threat. Intelligence turns out to be false, and they were "mislead" while Bush was just a "liar". Its called a double standard. Everyone got their intelligence from the same source.

By the way, I will go to my grave believing that the WMD's were shipped to Syria and Lebanon during the pre staging of the war,

*sigh* and I had thought we had finally moved past the term "flip flop".

Listen. Peope can change their minds (and yes, as surprising as this may seem, politicians are people too). Particlarly over the course of several years as situations change. I usggest reading Emersons Self Reliance, v *searches for the proper quote* *shrugs* can't find it. But it says something along the lines of say what you believe today. If tomorrow you believe the exact opposite, say it just as loud. Everyone contradicts themselves and everyone is a hypocrite. Deal with it.

Its not really the changing of minds that bothers me. Its the changing of minds while calling someone who believed the same thing a liar. Its the double standard of it all that I fail to be able to justify.

its my impression that they call bush a liar not because he believed in wmd (although the president does get different intelligence than the rest of us) but because he LIED.

with the entire WMD issue, the issue was that he continued to claim that there were WMD's after kicking out UN inspectors, fighting a war, sending in our inspectors, and finding nothing. It was only in december that our intelligence said there were none to be found, and there were a few speeces even after that where bush evoked the wmd idea.

So, let me see:
- you're blaming a party that is not in power for accepting government-issued information as fact (and not the lie it actually was)
- you're implying that the presumption of innocence contained in the statements means Democratic policies are/would be identical (I would agree that Democrats are too careful as not to harm voter sensibilities, but I cannot see evidence of hypocrisy)
- you're ommiting the fact that the absence of WoMD in Iraq came as a "big surprise" to anyone in the US. What happened to people who denied their existence prior to that (while Bush was the wartime leader everyone looked up to)?
