Your Next-Gen Console Choice

First there was the NES and the Atari, then there was the SNES and the Genesis. Next came the Playstation, the Dreamcast and the N64, which revolutionized gaming as we knew it. Or did it?

The Gamecube, the PS2 and the Xbox; when they first came out, these ground-breaking consoles were enough to make a grown man cry and a Harvard graduate foam at the mouth.

Now, we are at another turning point in console gaming. We are living in a great era comrades!

My question to you: which new console (which I've unofficially dubbed "Fifth Generation") are you most looking forward too?

I am saving up for the PS3, mostly because of the games the console provides; Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, and, if Rockstar survives, the next GTA.

Hrm, either the X-box 360 or the Nintendo Revolution.
I never liked any of the playstation games I played more than any of the X-box or Cube games I played, so I won't be getting the ps3.

Heh, remember the PS9 commercial for the PS2? I knew some (he was a stoner and a senior when I was a freshman in an artclass in HS) who thought that it was real.

Anyways, I'm going for the PS3. I've always been a PS fan (I refuse to get a PSP though, or pretty much any handheld) and I'm sticking to it from what I've seen.

X-Box is way overpriced with all its accessories and stuff..Microsoft just seems to be milking it for money.

Revolution..Eh. Not much of a nintendo fan, except the "classic" consoles. I've never been impressed by their types of games, as the variety seems just a bit limited. Also, they were the horrible people that spawned Final Fantasy. *shudders* Besides, the controllers look like a remote, and a dildo. Seriously. Wtf.

You forgot Pong!

I don't think the N64 was much of a revolution, more like an evolution. It had better graphics, but it wasn't like Atari which massively introduced gaming to the home, or NES which pushed the limits of what you could do with 8 bits.

Anyway, the Xbox 360 looks sweet, but I'm going to have to take a long look at it and the PS3 when they come out.

x360 here. i like the games, like the look, and like MS (mwuhahaha), plus i have an xbox now and am very happy with it.
tho i am tempted by the revolution's ability to download classic nintendo games, being an (ex-) nintendo fanboy... however i don't think thats enough to make me buy the console...

and i have a PC capable of playing most games rather well as it is, as well - i'm pretty much set :D

Xbox 360, no contest. I like PS kinda, but there's no really uber exclusive games for it now that GTA has been X-erlised, whereas 360 - Halo 3! Come on people! *droooooooools* Anyone with me?

Besides which the PS3 controllers look like a pair of Satan horns upside down - what the hell is up with making the hand-hold parts like 4 metres long? And also the shape - 360 curves smoothly inward (concave I believe) whereas the PS3 is convex - it's gonna be rolling around all over the place!

Well, I think the Xbox360 will be the best, graphics wise, title wise, online wise, etc. It also will come out first, and probably be cheaper than the PS3, especially by the time the PS3 releases. Its got great launch titles, and upcoming titles as well.

However, I did vote revolution, because I'm going to take a wild guess that I will end up having more fun with it(playing with friends, etc).

Xbox360...meh. To be honest with ya, the only thing that the Xbox has (and will ever) got going for it is the Halo franchise, which when Halo 3 comes out, will end. Also...to me, Halo has really been nothing more than another pretty FPS. And as for graphics, I'm not so sure of that either. Microsoft is attempting what Sony did last time; releasing their console way ahead of the others. This will create a quick fan-base for a while, however, once the other consoles come out, it will be set back as far as graphics are concerned.

But...this is just another random musing from a gamer who monitors console geopolitics.

And yes...the Revolution, if anything, is gonna be one hell of a time at parties!

Plus, you know, Fire Emblem, Zelda, Metroid, Fire Emblem, games like that. Oh and Fire Emblem.

The Xbox 360 is not overpriced. It's retailing at about $400, if I remember correctly. $400 in 2005 dollars is, I hate to say it, probably the equivalent to $300 [the Xbox's retail price] in... what was it, 2001?

This is the kind of shit that happens when our economy turns south. Microsoft isn't just selling this in the States, and they're looking to try to make the same market share that they had with the Xbox's initial release. Besides, the console market has moved along so quickly that it's not really possible to be releasing each new game system at the same price. Game consoles have been getting progressively expensive since Atari. Usually, there's a good reason for that. It's a lot better.

I'm probably going to stick to PC though, but I haven't made up my mind yet. I'm thinking a lot of Xbox games will be rereleased for PC [god knows the staples will, like Madden and many other franchise games], so in order to get the most bang for my buck I might just sink $400 into pimping out my computer.

Nintendo Revolution is for people that haven't discovered the internet and therefore haven't discovered what a ROM is. Say no more on the subject! ;)

X360...pretty pricey. I thought about it, and it's not like it doesn't have any attractive games...but I'm not willing to shell out over $400 to get the full X360 experience they've been selling to me for the past year.

PS3, can you say it without a smile? At least a grin? Oh yeah smart guy? I can see your teeth after you say the number "three"! So there!

You can get the X360 for 300, if your willing to settle for the minimum.

I forgot the place that tells you what you can get for the 300 pack and what you get with the 400 pack.

Anyway, indeed Call of Duty 2 is very attractive, but it doesn't sell me an entire console!

Being able to play every game the company ever released:

Nintendo: Check
Sony: Nope
Microsoft: Nope

Playing the games with a ninja weapon:

Willing to innovate so more people will play (AKA Do you have the balls to take the risk?):

As you can see, the Nintendo Revolution is what I am going with. And because it pwnz all the other consoles.

[Edit] It is also going to release with a New Super Smash Brothers, and is rumored to release with a new Metroid and it has been suggested being released with an Updated version The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

From what Ive read in various mags and sites the 360 has more processing power than the ps3 which will allow higher framerate and overall better graphics. But one thing PS3 does have going for it is the bluray, IF it catches on. also, most games, excepting a few, dont use all of the space in the discs anyway. In any case, I will probably get a 360 because they will be cheaper sooner. And they will have a hard drive.

Speaking of hard drives, that is really what pushed he xbox beyond the PS2 for me. being able to dl music to it and never having to worry about memory cards. And who could forget halo?

Sony: ...Why would we want old N64 games?
Microsoft: Oh...you just need one of our computers and the internet...

Nintendo: Of course! With our add-on controller sold seperately!
Sony and Microsoft: Er, we'll stick with using a normal controller like normal people...

Nintendo: Screw gaming! More technological madness! Who knows? Maybe NASA one day might find use for this utter crap!
Sony and Microsoft: Yeah....no....we'll stick to better machines.

I voted for the Nintendo Revolution.

The PS 3 controller is alot like the old PS controllers which I did not like because after a hour or so of play my thumb was extremely sore from being curled up for too long. The new controller does look like this problem could be worse because the postition or the R and L buttons place the four main buttons right under the base of my thumb. Microsoft and Nintendo are at least able to make a controller that is shapped to fit comfortably in the human hand.

Halo, the game that is said to be the reason the Xbox was successful, is no longer exclusive to the Xbox. Halo is now available for computers running Windows and Mac OS X.

The Xbox could be played online, if you pay Microsoft to use there servise. The Xbox 360 will probably use the same network as it is quite profitable. The PS 3 is supposed to have a online feature modelled after Microsoft's network. The Nintendo revolution can also be played online provided you have a wireless router. Nintendo will not charge people to use this sevice.

Nintendo does have to defeat a reputation of having games made for little kids. Nintendo needs to get some more games intended for a mature audience and a good racing simulator (Sony has Gran Tourismo, Microsoft has Froza).
If Nintendo is able to get some good titles then it should be the more popular system.

It should be noted that all three systems are inferior to the PC. Well most people's PC's mine can barely run Age of Empires 2 or Diablo 2. Hell, even MSN lags.

I for one can't stand all the compatibility issues with the PC. On my consoles I know that the game will work right every time. On my PC I usually have to fiddle with a few settings before the games work, and even then they can crash mid-game. Very few games on the PC are good enough to be worth the hassle, but there are a few. KOTOR 1 and 2, Planescape: Torment, and Morrowind are good examples.

Also, with consoles I can play on my TV instead of infront of a monitor.

And I should care because...?

My TV's resolution suits me just fine. Add the fact that it's 28" instead of 17", and that I can sit comfortably in my couch while playing.

Also, consoles are much better for playing vs. friends.

Xbox 360 for me for one very simple reason - Project Gotham Racing 3. I'm married with 2 kids, so don't get the time to play a vast amount, so I only want a console for a quick hit of pointless fun.

I had a Dreamcast and played Metropolis Street Racer to death, so naturally went for an Xbox because of Project Gotham Racing (although I reckon MSR was better). PGR2 was awesome. Now I've got Forza to keep me going, and by the time I'm fed up with that, the 360 will have been out a year or so and it'll be cheap enough for me to justify getting it and PGR3.

And I agree about the advantage of playing consoles over PC - I prefer the big TV with surround sound to the monitor, and the big comfy armchair to the computer stool.

I'm definitely getting a PS3 and a Revolution. But if I had a choice of only 1? PS3. Mainly because of the games. Although I do love the new motion sensitive controller concept, innovation isn't going to do me any good if I'm stuck with 3D drywalling as opposed to Splinter Cell 4. Sorry Nintendo, but you just don't have great 3rd party support.
