Who, out of ALL eligible Americans, would you like to see as President?

There are a number of threads inviting speculation about possible candidates for the next Presidential election. This one invites you to pick anyone who meets the Constitutonally mandated requirements for this office:

Article II, Section 1, Clause 5: No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

There is no poll, since there are millions of people who meet these critera.

Section 1. I've been thinking about this for a while now, and have come to a sad realization. I cannot think of one single living person who I could wholeheartedly endorse for president. Not one. Every time I've voted for president since 1992, I've been doing so with extreme reservations about the person I've been voting for.

Come to think of it, it's been longer than that. I've been voting since 1984, and have always voted for the lesser of the two evils.

(I must confess that in 2000, my pen hovered briefly over Pat Buchanan's line on the ballot, as I though, "Why vote for a lesser evil?" Sense prevailed, though, and I reluctantly marked the line for Al Gore, wishing there was someone better and knowing that it wouldn't matter because Bush was going to take North Carolina anyway. Such is the fate of a man who is able to think for himself.)

But if I must name somebody, I'll name Wendell Berry. He has a rare quality, one that has been sadly lacking in our political leadership for some time now: wisdom. He is perhaps the wisest man I know. However, he'd probably not do well in politics, if he could be persuaded to run in the first place, which I doubt.

Personally being President of the most powerful country on earth should require certain experience of government and should also require a certain amount of training to hold such a job. Given that there are no fantastic politicans out there lets for a laugh give Hillary a chance..just so Bill could be first lady and hire him a new Monica!

In saying that they could be brill as Bill has been president for 8 years and wasn't as bad as George getting some in his bathroom isn't on the same level as waging war and instigating terrorist attacks!

I can sympathize with your plight. I can think of only a handful of people I would consider working to get elected, and many of those are virtually "unknown quantities," since I know them only by reputation and virtually nothing about their character.

On Wendell Berry: traditionally, thinkers in general, and professors in particular, don't seem to make good campaigners/politicians ... not use to the down and dirty world of politics I suspect. :(

I want to see Coan O'Brien as president, then at least we'll have the hair to protect us, should anything go wrong.
Also, he could help inact sweeping reforms in the UN, such as Article #4095036-B09 (that would demand that every meeting of any international body start with an opening monologue), and Article #8675309-M66 (that would require every ruling body to have a band of minimum talent goofballs that will play music that hasn't been popular for over a decade before, after, and at random intervals during any meeting).
Finally, he would be able to convince Iran to cease its nuclear program through a series of hard hitting interviews in which he'll ask the questions that everyone wants the answers to, such as what their favorite food is.

are we talking about someone who has the means to win or just anyone we want in office?

if it is just anyone.... the guy who owns the sno cone stand down the street would make a really great president I think. He is moderate enough to win most of the votes. He really has some great ideas.

if it is someone with a built in following, I am going to have to choose John McCain I met him once at a Republican fundraiser, I sat at his table and talked to him for about 1 hour, I think he would do a great job. I don't agree with his stance on everything, but it wouldn't be America if I did. ;)

If I were supreme ruler of the universe, the next president would be Thomas Galisano. He was the founder of a highly profitable human resource firm, Paychex, and ran for governor of New York three as an independent, the third time being very successful. Now he will run as a Republican. He seems like the type of guy that can put the US's house back in order.

This is soooooo true. I haven't missed an election since 1970 (counting legislative and primaries). I campaigned for Bobby Kennedy before I could vote. I campaigned and voted for Nixon. Still think he was a good leader, but did some illegal things because he was parinoid. Met Jimmy Carter in the primary, he was good but the economy went south. Met Reagan in primary, very shallow man, glad I can say I NEVER voted for him. Guess Nixon and Carter are the only two I've voted on without holding my nose.

I would like to see Powell, McCain or Gore, in that order. I feel really bad McCain didn't beat GW in the 2000 primary, but GW has a way of making war heros into Chicken defications. Can't understand why people buy things like that. Unfortuanatly, I think the American people have gotten what they deserve over the last 25 years. They keep voting on image rather than substance.

If everyone wants to get technical about who is eligble, both George W Bush and Bill Clinton are. They would have to be vice presidents tho. Then the President would have to resign and they would be eligble for president for two years because while you cant be elected more than twice, you cud serve for up to 10 years.

But Ronald Reagan was an actor before prez, and Ahnold was an actor/bodybuiled who became govener of the most econmic and populous state in the U.S. Anythings possible in politics, I bet my cat could become prez if it tried, it fits the credentials.

I would have to say that we eliminate Democracy and replace it with a Constitutional Monarchy, look at Britain. No one hates them, they have friends, they were only bombed because they helped us, AND the Queen does nothing, but be a figurehead. The parliment decides everything, not the queen.So.... If we found a guy who looked good, but was loved by all,(Zaphod Beeblerox from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), and congress and the senate made all the choices, countries wouldn't hate us as much, maybe even begin to love us!

Well, there's my two-cents in this debate.

Yes, but jusst because someone could doesn't mean you want them to. I could go out on a raping and murdering spree tonight, but no one really wants me to do it because they'd hate the competition.
Anyway, having seen Jon Stewart I think he is a worthless ass. He has good writers, yes, but he really makes me want to punch him. And I could punch him, I've got the resources to go out and do it, but I shouldn't punch him because then I'd go to prison on Article #B345345345 which states:
"Stalking down and punching mediocre comedians is punishable by being forced to listen to fiftythree (53) (dreiundfunfzig) of his most annoying fans explain how great he is and how great a president he would make for a total of five thousand (5000) (funftausend) consecutive days."
I would have to say that we eliminate Democracy and replace it with a Constitutional Monarchy, look at Britain. No one hates them, they have friends, they were only bombed because they helped us,
Ever heard of a little group called the IRA? They were rather popular with Britains a couple years ago. Quite the bomb, as I understand it.
AND the Queen does nothing, but be a figurehead.
And be worthlessly rich. Now, it is possible that at the current time the Royals are simply coasting along on the money that their ancestors gathered centuries ago, but that still means that the money came from somewhere it should've have stayed and went somewhere it shouldn't have gone.
