What good is NATO anymore?

NATO was formed originally in opposition to the Eastern bloc of the Soviets and their allies. With the disentigration of the USSR back in the late 80s/early 90s, NATO seems to have fufilled its purpose. With no more enemies left, what is it doing still existing?

Because it would be a diplomatic faux pas to actually state the obvious.

But it's true, it's no good anymore. It's no longer given that Europe helps if the US goes to war, Europe is no longer threatened militarily, the US has stocked up its military to not need the cooperation anymore and European countries would be better off if they created an EU defence force instead.

Well I think if America didn't need Europe to go to war, Bush would have never been pissed at the UN :mp5:
