GW has no firmer supporters (and business partners) than the Saudis. When he's not making money with them they're walking across Texas hand in hand. And they have been there since the beginning supporting the war on terror.

until now... (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/23/politics/23diplo.html?hp&ex=1127448000&en=013b9cacddbc00a1&ei=5094&partner=homepage)

Prince Saud al-Faisal, the Saudi foreign minister, said Thursday that he had been warning the Bush administration in recent days that Iraq was hurtling toward disintegration, a development that he said could drag the region into war.

"There is no dynamic now pulling the nation together," he said in a meeting with reporters at the Saudi Embassy here. "All the dynamics are pulling the country apart." He said he was so concerned that he was carrying this message "to everyone who will listen" in the Bush administration.

Even those of us who feel that the pottery barn rules aply (which is to say that we broke it and we have an obligation to stay and fix it) must eventually come to one simple conslusion.

"Stay the course" does not have to mean "stay on the exact course".

The current leadership and policies vis-a-vis Iraq have one common problem - they are NOT working. And saying that simply being there using the same methods and tactics will eventually make everything work out is a pipe dream.

You broke it, you bought it. Fine

But it sure as fuck would be nice if the guy who was trying to put it back together wasn't insisting on using a sledgehammer to do so... because by the time you let someone else have a try, there ain't gonna be much left besides dust to try and rebuild it from.

The Saudi's have never supported the United States, regardless of who;s in the White House. They've used the United States, and been (at least intermittantly) useful to the United States.
