One of my classes they said some scientist proposed each human has some pre-set weight that their body will try to maintain. Seeing that I've weighed between 130-140 for the past 6 years during some large changes in diet, I'm inclined to agree.

I'm pleased to be able to say that I am, according to scientists at least, the ideal weight for my height. Slap-bang in the middle of the scale, in fact. I exercise enough to be moderately fit, though I'm not all skin, bone and muscle either.

More importantly, I'm one of those people who can eat seemingly anything I want without any negative side-effects. I know how much women in particular enjoy to hear that, so I thought I should put it in. :D

Very true...

...that said, I'm 5'10 and I weigh about 190 lbs...a little more in winter when it's harder to get decent exercise.

I'm 6'2" and about 14st, which puts me at the very top of "OK" in terms of BMI, or the very bottom of "a bit fat". So a little chubby, then. My baggy clothes, decent legs, long, skinny arms and big, grasping hands disguise it well ;)

It can change quite a lot, though... Before university I weighed over 18st. At one point, I weighed 12st7, which was nice; that's what cycling 100 miles a week gets you :/

A friend of mine is 6'6" (about 2m) and weighs 10st 8lbs (about 75kg). That's not healthy...his BMI, for those who are interested, is 15.8.

You're fine...BMI's a little low, but you're probably fine...
Problem is, it depends a lot on your diet and metabolism. If you eat healthily and you have a fast metabolism, your weight's going to be quite low. If you eat shit and have a slow metabolism, you're going to be overweight.

How do you figure out BMI?

(Mass in kilogrammes) / (height in metres)^2

And more usefully:

Too skinny < 18-20 (depending on who you believe)
25 < fat
30 < obese.

I'm overweight and have tried numerous diets which didn't work. Recently I just read a book by William Leith, a British Journalist, called, The Hungry Years, ''Confessions of a Food Addict'', which details his struggles with his numerous addictions including cocaine and booze but mostly dealing with food. An Interview with a certain Dr Atkins led him to give it a try and the rest they say is history, for him and me, i read Dr Atkins book and started the diet a while back and i'll be damned, the diet is working, it was a bit restrictive at first but it bloody works, i've got a ways to go yet but it f###ing works, Yahooo.!!!

no way.
i'm 5'10 and 12st7

so im (5 x 12) + 10 inches tall and (12 * 14) + 7 lbs
= 60 + 10 inches and 168 + 7 lbs
= 70 inches 175 lbs
= 70 * 2.54 cm 175/2.2 kg
= 177.8 cm = 79.54 kg

so my bmi is 79.54 / (1.778^2)
79.54 / 3.161284

= 25.16

so i'm overweight? no way - i'm the skinniest person there is. i have a little fat on my belly recently, but i'm still way skinny overall. aren't I?

Hey, I don't invent the rules (http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/healthy_living/your_weight/bmiimperial_index.shtml) ;)

Of course, there's variation. If you have a lot of muscle your BMI will be higher, for instance. I wouldn't let 0.15 worry you over-much. I think it only works properly for adults, too, so if you're a young teenager it might not be spot on.

I've always been the skinny one in the family. The women all hover around 200 lbs. I stay around 125. I've been an athlete nearly all my life, first with track and field, and now with yoga.

My BMI is around 18 (pretty darn good for a female).

I am very comfortable with my weight, even though I'm told all the time by people that I'm too skinny. I've been this weight for 25 years, with a couple outrageous fluctuations (temporarily gained the 'freshman fifteen' when i went to college, and another time dropped down to 112 after a bad breakup.)

I don't believe that there's a right weight, per se.

I'm 5'10 and a half - 5'11, and fluctuate between 80-82 kg.
But it's predominantly muscle.
It's not necessarily pretty muscle, like it used to be, but it's
definitely muscle.

There are those who'd say that the weight means you're fat, or slightly obese or whatever.

Well, what about fighters? Take Mike Tyson in his hayday - or even NOW.
He's about my height (slightly taller, maybe), but he's easily in the mid 120s of kg.
It's mostly, if not entirely muscle.

And, as for the "Fat"kins diet, no, I don't buy it.
http://www.atkinsexposed.org/
If you eat lots and lots of meat, butter and eggs you'll die of a heart condition. He himself had at least one heart attack and was obese by the time he died.
http://www.nndb.com/people/153/000025078/

I think that the way to fitness is exercise combined with an o.k. diet
i.e. you don't have to be overly obsessive about your diet, and you can have that burger and chips every now and then, but you should
watch your intake of certain things e.g. too much of any one food group.
A balanced diet is the way to go.
As long as you exercise, usually it's all good.
I, myself, am a mixed martial artist.
(Karate, Kickboxing, Tai ch'i, Pa-kua and Wing Chun style Kung fu),
and I have designs on taking yoga in future years.

If you don't take it to the extreme and simply cut down on carbohydrates, using vegetables to replace them rather than eating copious amounts of meat, it works...at least it did for my father.

I had my body fat percentage checked though and it is only 25% which my dr says is very normal for a woman of childbearing age, he says I just have a lot of heavy muscles and big bones. People are surprised at my actual weight, they guess about 30 pounds lighter. go figure. yeah I am going to bet you are a male too.
Women, esp. young women of childbearing years tend to accumulate some extra fat that is very difficult to lose. For some reason our body wants to keep extra fuel around in case we get pregnant or something. :) I am working on it though, I have been going to the gym but seem to be gaining weight and losing inches I guess I am building muscle.
