If you dig a very deep hole, where will you end up?

A very interesting spin-off from the Google maps mania.

I can't believe it! Years of Saturday morning cartoons lied to me! If you dig through the world in the U.S. you won't end up in China, you just end up in the ocean!
WHY!?! WHY!?!
Is the Black Ranger really Catholic?
Did that idiot vampire thing from D&D (the cartoon) really, you know, in the woods?
OK, so he probably did, as much a loser/assjack as he was.
But, anyway:
Is anything really true anymore?

Dead, somewhere beneath the earth's crust...but hypothetically...just over 300 miles south-east of New Zealand

That's close to me...I imagine most people in the UK will end there.

Where in the UK are you (if you don't mind me asking...I only know you're in the UK because of yoour 65dos obsession :p )

Didn't Sir Arthur Conan Doyle write a book about this?
And I'd apparently end up in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Assuming there's some way to survive the pressure/temperature environment once you punch a hole in the earth's crust.

Live in Essex, at uni in Leicester...on the topic of 65dos, check your TGs. Northern Scotland may be lucky enough to hit land...

Edit: Actually, if you find the Google map thread, I posted pretty much my exactly where my house is on there...

if you are talking about going through the exact center of the earth to get to the other side, then you would die from intense heat before you came out the other side. you see,the earths core is molten metal. thats why we have volcanoes.

heres another fun fact:

when you start digging, you feel like you are going down. when you reach the center you feel like you are level. and when you come out the other side, you would be climbing up to get out of the hole. gravity and earths rotation causes this....

Apparently, digging from where I am, I'm going to end up in the Pacific ocean off the coast of Chile... How odd.

Yeah, I was apparently going to end up in the South Atlantic between South Africa and Argentina...the problem is, I think, the site sometimes simply reverses your lat/long positions from N - S and from E - W. The first part is fine, but the second part is wrong - if you're E, you take your long. position from 180 eg. I'm 0.5 E, so my position on the other side of the hole would be 180 - 0.5 E, so 179.5 E. If you're W, just take your position from 180 to give a W position.

Actually, at some point you'd weaken the structural integrity of the Earth so badly that it would close in on itself, so you'd never make it.

Before or after the sides collapse? :D
