As (nearly) stated on Indepundit's first post:

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

I am a liberal. I believe in keeping an open mind, and treating all people with compassion, respect and tolerance.

I am a conservative. I believe that Enlightenment values form the cornerstone of our society, and I practice the virtues of integrity, civility and personal responsibility.

I am a libertarian. I believe in limited government, free minds and free markets.

I am a progressive, because there is always room for improvement.

I am an environmentalist. I long for cleaner communities, clean air and clean water. I believe our natural treasures should be protected.

I am a capitalist. I believe that ambition, competition, and innovation can provide the answers to some of our greatest challenges.

I am a democrat, because my Governor is a Republican, and I choose to exercise my right to vote and select his opponent in the General Election.

I am a republican - To be more precise, I will change my registration next year so that I may participate in the 2008 Presidential Primary.

I am an Independent. I am a free agent, split-ticket voter. I recognize that political parties exist for the benefit of politicians, not the people.

I am an American because here, I can be all of the above...

What do you consider yourself? Are you conservative? Are you liberal?

My political affiliation is that I hate politicians. I prefer practical people who realize that unsubstantiated social theory is part of the problem and not the solution. The simple fact that everyone is trying to convince people that their philosophy is right goes to show that nobody is really sure themselves.

Important:

Liberal =/= "Left" ie being "liberal" is not the opposite of being conservative.

That's only in the US, and even there it's, strictly speaking, a misuse of the word.

That being said I believe that everyone is his own master, but that sometimes we decide stupid things simply because we can't know any better. In those cases the state needs to come in and set things right.

That's true. "Liberal" means Left only in America. In Europe it means some sort of center-right. Anyway the american "liberal" would be translated to the european social democrat, which is a much more precise term.

And among philosophers of either nation it means something totally different. I think liberal is probably the most often confused term on the planet.

Yeah. Maybe it's because America never had any important Socialist or Social Democrat party, therefore leaving the liberals on the left of the political spectrum, which (in Europe) is where they were until socialism appeared.

I'm a none of the above. The left/right dichotomy is not one I follow. I choose based on what works best and whatever gives people the maximum possible rights without allowing them to harm eachother.

I agree that the left/right division is rather narrow and not accurate. I agree mostly with the American "left" but then I agree with the "right" on a few issues. But to place myself, I am a Democratic Socialist.

Two comments:
Outside the USA christianity is usually associated with the left or center.
Outside the USA the majority of the parties is *between* liberal and communist.

As such, your poll is worthless for people outside the USA.

In Europe I would classify myself as liberal, i.e. very much in the centre of the political spectrum. This translates into:
France: A few inches to the right of the centre
Germany: Just left of the centre (and do not confuse the German Liberal Democrats with an actual liberal party)
Britain: Quite a bit left of the centre
USA: I'm so far left of the centre that the centre line is a dot to me

Sorry if you guys hate this poll, I don't really care. I KNOW that the options suck. I could have made a much better poll, I am a poli-sci major. I only did this to flush out some conservatives. If you are conservative, in any sense of the word send me a telegram we have things to discuss.

Socialist-Democrat. And no, nowhere near a commie. Yes, I know social-democratism is based on Marx as a way to achieve communism, but it turns out social-democratism actually work, as opposed to communism.

Probably closest to a left-libertarian. My nation is currently at Civil Rights Lovefest, and most decisions there are the ones I would normally make. The political spectrum is probably too large for a poll, especially for an international one.

I said I wasn't going to post about politics anymore, but here goes. If I lived in most European countries, I'd be considered a Social Democrat (or the nearest equivalent). Here in the U.S.A. I'm usually called a commie traitor. I'm neither, but that generally doesn't seem to matter to most people. I disagree with a lot of my government's policies, so apparently, I've committed treason. I will keep my promise about political threads in so far as I will not respond to anyone else's posts. So save your insults, I won't be hearing them. (yes, I'm bitter toward the right in this country)

Whenever anyone asks me this questions, I respond, "I'm apathist."

So since you asked... I'm apathist.

In all seriousness, I'm almost a perfect moderate, except that I lean slightly to the right. In the words of my history teacher, "I'm a perfect moderate... I'll shoot you if you try to chop down my trees."
