Today, I officially start as a Cub Scout Den Leader. After school, my son's den will meet for the first time since last spring and I'm the leader. I got involved because I was already participating in every single scout function my son did and the other boys seemed to look toward me for guidance/assistance because it was clear I knew what I was doing. I feel like I'm ready to go. We'll see this afternoon.

Dont tempt me. I'm near expert in many of those areas.

No-if they pay attention, I will be able to teach them a lot of good stuff. It didnt occur to me till I started planning activities and the camp outs I participated in over the summer- I've accumulated a lot of knowledge/experience over the last 38 yrs.

Oh, come on. It's not an evil organization. It's just a bunch of kids in uniforms learning to live in the woods in case they ever need to fight a guerilla war in defense of the fatherland.

The kids do like the smores, but this past summer, I cooked marinated flank steak fajitas with grilled peppers and Vidalia onions over a campfire. All fresh ingredients. I think that was pretty good. Everyone there enjoyed it-kids and adults alike.
Its what you make of it. You could just burn some hot dogs on a stick and open a can of beans and the kids will be just as happy. I could eat that too, but I certainly wouldnt, given the choice.
Now kids- and other adults, saw that you could create an exceptional meal over a campfire. I try to put a little style and class into things I do. There is no reason to suffer, just because you're in the woods.

I know. European scouts are pretty harmless and inclusive and have non-discrimination policies, even though they let the Swedish king be a patron (off with his head - what else do they give you knives for?!?). The American Scouts, on the other hand, are religiously motivated and scary in that discriminatory sense... but I guess if that's your cup of tea, then they're great. ;)

Sorry. I'm bad like that.

Anway, I was in an experimental group when I was younger...they formed one Scout troop with boys and girls, because we girls didn't want to go into Girl Guides. It was awesome! Way better than Girl Guides! But it got shut down :( And since I refused to go into Girl Guides, that was the end of my interaction with the Scouts.

What, the weekends don't count?

It's only 10 here boyo... but if you wanted another nooner after the one coming up in your time zone, just remember that you could pretty much have a nooner every hour of the day if you wanted to represent every time zone!

That's what I get for not being a native speaker - certain words we learned during English class in school just stuck with me, and sometimes I'm silly enough to use them.

Swedish postal carrier uniforms aren't very militarish. This is a friend's High Guard uniform that I was allowed to borrow and haven't returned, because I need to have it cleaned.

Well, it will probably do the kids some good to be around an everyday kind of adult rather than the usual stuck-up prick that is only there to fulfill their inner desire to appear helpful to their community and recieve acknowledgement for those acts.

Well, I have three kids of my own, so I kinda know how to talk to kids. I've joined-I was already fully participating in everything already, because I cant just let my 6 yr old go off with people I dont know especially into the woods or to an amusement park. I want him to get the good experience out of it-he is exited that I'm doing it so far. I dont need and recognition, just kids that have a good time and are eager to take part-thats all I'd ask for.
I did have to get fingerprinted and photographed.
I also invited the parents to stay for the first meetings, rather than just drop the kids off and pick them up an hour or so later. Giving them a chance to see who I am and talk to me in person, instead of just emails or the phone. there is an assitant leader thats new too- its good for everyone to be familiar.

Nope-No Rambo on the agenda.

All kidding aside- There wont be any military doctrine here, but I am interested in teaching them how to have some confidence in themselves and adapt and overcome the unexpected. ANd how to make their own good luck by starting prepared. Not just fold when faced with the unexpected, but how to look inside for the answers and solutions-rather than rely on others.

Carnivorous, I am a Cub Scout Leader as well. I have two boys who are Cub Scouts, and it only made sense.

We're the pack that has the uniforms all properly done out. The one that knows far more than what you read in that little book they give you.

Ever see boys use hand and arm signals properly? Move up and down a trail without making a sound?

Oh, and their parents LIKE the idea that they are getting training in the use of air rifles on the side.

I'm planning on staying their leader, making the transition to the older Scouts, and continuing to teach them.

The range I belong to is already setting aside money for .22LR Anschutz rifles and some CMP rifles for them to shoot when they get older.

That sounds like something to aim for, though right now, I have 6 boys aging from 6 to 8. In this first meeting, the boys all now know how to tie a horse-hitch and a figure eight knot. They all seem to be listening to me-they were attentive and well behaved, so we are off to a good start.
They all made a sign for next week's pack meeting-drawing and coloring it in well and we had a baloon race. Its hard to get much done in an hour.
