A game for music nerds

Kanabia
22-09-2005, 13:13
I heard something similar to this being played on a radio station over here a couple of years ago and I thought it'd be fun to try out. I couldn't remember the details, though, so I recreated it myself. I thought it'd also be a good way to do another music thread :D ("What is your favourite band" threads get a little boring after the 100,000th time.)

It's basically an association game. You start with a band, and someone has to associate another band with it (but the association has to be true, and something historical, rather than describing something intangible like the influence they had on another band). For example, if the band was Led Zeppelin, the next person might state "Jimmy Page was in the Yardbirds before he joined Led Zeppelin." then the person after that could say "Eric Clapton was in the Yardbirds before he formed the Rock supergroup Cream" (Although you couldn't say "The Yardbirds influenced the sound of early heavy metal like Black Sabbath.") Other examples that are acceptable include "Bob from Band X was a schoolfriend of Tom from Band Y", "Band X toured extensively with Band Y in 1973", "Tom from Band Y used to share an apartment with Steve from Band Z", etc. Stuff like that.

You "win" the game by stumping people into a dead end. If you make an association to a band that is very obscure, and nobody can answer it within 24 hours of making your post, you win the round, and get to pick the next band to make associations with. If nobody can make an association to the band you pick within 24 hours, post another one.

However, if you think something posted is false, you can call them out to justify it. If they can't post evidence of some form, even a book reference (posting evidence for another player is also satisfactory) or they back down, you win the round and choose the next band. I'll keep a tally of people's wins, though I reserve the right to play too :p

Any questions?

If not, we'll start with something relatively easy. The band is Nirvana.

EDIT- By the way, please keep spam to a minimum. Thanks :)

Edie Brickell's last solo album had accompaniment from Charlie Sexton

Also, the original drummer of the New Bohemians was a young kid named Matt Chamberlain who later moved to Seattle and formed Soundgarden.

Chambelain also had a line of Drums produced by him with the assistance of John Farris from INXS

INXS' lead singer was Michael Hutchens whose death prompted Bono from U2 to write a few of the songs featured on all that you can't leave behind.

The Offspring were originally from Orange Country, California...also the birthplace of Rage Against the Machine. :)

RATM were formed from the ashes of a band called Inside Out. This seriously pissed off the other band called Inside Out who were a three piece all female group and released an LP on Meantime Records, to the extent that they talked about it on the liner notes.

Audioslave were formed out of ratm, a band that have used the same riff twice for their biggest single releases.

Nope: we're on the all-female Inside Out now, not RATM.

Ah, the difference is that they actually make reference to the other Inside Out themselves, rather than just sharing their name.

Ah, I'll do it myself...

Karen Neal played bass and sang in Inside Out. She then went on to form Queen Bee. This band appeared on a tribute LP to Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction. The lead singer of Zodiac Mindwarp was a chap called Mark Manning. In 1987 he released an EP called Big Fat 45 which claimed to be the work of the band Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, but it was actually his work, rather than that bands (he also later went on to work with the members of The JAMMs on various other projects). The JAMMs later turned into the KLF and then the K Foundation. As the K Foundation they recorded a track called K Sera Sera which they claimed would only ever be released when world peace was declared. Featured on this recording were the Red Army Choir. The Red Army Choir performed backing vocals live for the semi-fictional band The Leningrad Cowboys. In the film which features this band - Leningrad Cowboys Go America the director Jim Jarmusch makes a cameo appearance. In one of Jarmusch's films - Mystery Train - Joe Strummer plays the role of an english man fascinated with rock'n'roll mythology. Strummer sang with The Clash. The members of The Clash wrote and played all of the music on the Spirit Of St Louis LP which was credited to Ellen Foley. Ellen Foley sang the duet Paradise By The Dashboard Light with Meatloaf. Meatloaf duetted with Cher on the track Real Dead Ringer For Love. Cher was originally a member of a duo with Sonny Bono and had a hit with I Got You Babe. This song was later covered by UB40 and Chrissie Hynde. Chrissie Hynde is the lead singer of The Pretenders. The Pretenders were produced by Chris Thomas on several recordings. Chris Thomas was called in by Pink Floyd to do the final mixing of the LP Dark Side Of The Moon.

I thank you.

EDIT: I could also have gone The Clash -> Mick Jones -> London SS -> Brian James -> The Damned -> (produced by) Nick Mason -> Pink Floyd

Wait a minute...I didn't know we started again...

Pink Floyd performed "Dark Side of the Moon" covered by the Goo Goo Dolls on benefit compilation. The song was produced by Paul Westerberg of the Replacements. He also played on the Singles Soundtrack with Screaming Trees, of which the bass player assisted J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. recently. Dinosaur Jr. played Lollapolooza this summer in Chicago, a festival created by Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction. Gor the Kettle Whistle sessions, Flea of the Red hot Chili Peppers played bass. When the Chili Peppers lost Jack Irons as a drummer John Fish from Fishbone played on a few tracks in the recording of Mother's Milk. John was initially a drummer for Bootsy Collins who of course came originally from Parliament Funkadelic. P-Funk was a major influence on the guitar sound of one David Gilmour...known for his work in Pink Floyd, who also is rumoured to have toured the UK with George Clinto nad the P-Funk allstars.

The game is not over yet...although we are back at Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd's seminal work 'Dark Side of the Moon' was covered by the Easy Star record label's All-Stars, which includes Sluggy Ranks. He went to the same primary school (Clan Carthy) as Wayne Wonder, who appeared at the 2004 Reggae Sumfest, along with Lionel Richie.

Here's a short one:

Lionel Richie co-wrote We Are The World with Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson duetted with Paul McCartney on the song The Girl Is Mine. Paul McCartney was leader of the band wings. One of the guitarists that played in Wings was Henry McCullough. Henry McCullough can be heard stating 'I don't know, I was really drunk at the time' on the LP Dark Side Of The Moon.

Please don't take this back to Pink Floyd after this...
Pink Floyd were originally formed by Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason under a couple of names (Sigma 6, The T-Sets), before becoming the Abdabs along with Clive Metcalfe, Keith Nobles and Juliette Gale. The name eventually became the Screaming Abdabs. The Screamin' Ab Dabs was the name of an early 1980s band fronted by Alison Moyet.

Alison Moyet worked with Vince Clarke in Yazoo, Vince Clarke was of course in Depeche Mode, who's "Personal Jesus" was covered by Johnny Cash, Johnny Cash worked with U2 on "The Wanderer", and U2 opened Live8, the concert organised by Bob Geldof who played "Pink" in the film of "The Wall" by Pink Floy...whoops.

Wait there, how about...Alison Moyet worked with Vince Clarke in Yazoo, Vince Clarke was of course in Depeche Mode, who's "Personal Jesus" was covered by Johnny Cash, Johnny Cash also covered "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails, who themselves had covered "Physical" by Adam and the Ants, Adam Ant was one of the original punk rockers in the 76 crew and used to hang round with Sid Vicious who wore a t-shirt saying i hate Pink Floy...oh, bugger.

Right, how about...Alison Moyet worked with Vince Clarke in Yazoo, Vince Clarke was of course in Depeche Mode, who's "Personal Jesus" was covered by Johnny Cash, Alabama 3 released a song called "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash", They also were responsible for the song "Woke up this morning" which featured as the opening credits music to "The Sopranos", which featured Little Steven, who performed many times with Bruce Springsteen, Bruce Springsteen released "Because the Night" with Patti Smith, who was married to Lenny Kaye who was the journalist who assembled the "Nuggets" compilation of 60s garage bands...ok, i'm veering close to a Floyd link here, should i stop?

;)Lenny Kaye is rumored to have first used the term "punk" when describing a style of music. The Ramones were the first punk band. Marky Ramone now plays in the Misfits. Glenn Danzig used to be in the Misfits. Joey Castillo used to play in Danzig's band, and before that Joey was in the band Sugartooth.

Ok...Lenny Kaye was guitarist in the Patti Smith Group. Patti Smith's first album, Horses, brought her to fame when punk began to take off. The CD reissue of this album includes a bonus live version of My Generation, originally by The Who. My Generation has been covered by, among others, Green Day (it's a shite cover, even as a Green Day fan I'll admit that). (I could take this to Pink Floyd quite quickly here, admittedly with a tenuous link - Green Day's drummer, Tre Cool's real name is Frank Edwin Wright III, the same surname as Floyd's keyboardist)...
Green Day's frontman is Billie Joe Armstrong who co-owns Adeline records with his wife Adrienne. AFI are signed to Adeline Records. AFI's bassist Hunter Burgan is also a member of on-off punk band The Frisk, who were initially formed in 2000 from the remains of The Criminals. The Criminals debut, Never Been Caught was released on Lookout! records, which was the first label Green Day signed to, and on which they released their debut album 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours (a compilation of previous EPs), which included a cover of Operation Ivy's 'Knowledge'. Operation Ivy were also signed to Lookout! and their song Hangin' Out appeared on a Lookout! compilation called The Thing That Ate Floyd...hee hee!
Just take it from Op. Ivy, yeah?
