Rodong Sinmun Calls for Directing All Efforts to Harvesting
Pyongyang, September 20 (KCNA) -- "All the agricultural workers and helpers should give full play to the might of the campaign for directing all efforts again in the harvesting campaign with the same vim and vigor with which they did in the spring farm work and thus fully demonstrate to the world once gain the heroic spirit of the army and people of the DPRK that they can do everything when the Party is determined", says Rodong Sinmun Tuesday in an editorial. "Rice precisely means socialism and the campaign to fill the nation's store with rice is the most important one to defend socialism," the editorial says, and goes on: "In order to add shine to the Songun leadership feats of the Workers' Party of Korea and make the state policy of settling the food problem of the people prove successful, it is necessary to push forward this year's harvesting and threshing campaign in full gear. Focusing all efforts on any work is a powerful mode of campaign in the Songun era which provides a firm guarantee for success in the socialist economic construction. We should dynamically carry out the harvesting campaign by directing all efforts to it and successfully conclude this year's farming."

When the nation's stores are filled with rice, the people's life will become happier and the whole country animated. Every citizen should turn out in the campaign for supporting the countryside and make innovations in the campaign to gather in time the grain cultivated by servicepersons and people by the sweat of their brow. All the officials, Party members and other working people should perform feats in the immediate harvesting and thus significantly greet the 60th anniversary of the WPK with brilliant labour achievements with the high pride of being victors. The whole Party and nation and all the people should turn out as one to wind up this year's farming, true to the Party's policy of directing all efforts to farm work, in order to certainly attain the goal of grain production set by the Party and bring about a radical turn in the nation's agricultural production and the settlement of the food problem of the people.

(Editors Note: I have added quotation marks where appropriate in this piece. Apparently, quotation marks go against the ideals of both Juche and Songun.)

So... Rice=Socialism?

So, when I eat rice, I'm really taking a bite out of Socialism? I think I'm going to make a Broccoli, Cheese, and Socialism Casserole. Mmmmmmmm...

Anyway, I saw something peculiar in the last paragraph. It almost seems like they are acknowledging that they have a food supply problem, buried under the layers of KWP and DPRK propaganda.

Thoughts?

I'd like to know how the whole country becoming animated is a good thing.

I wouldn't want my cat to be chasing a mouse around the house with an axe, destroying my furniture, or to risk having a piano drop on my head when I leave the house... Dealing with the whole interstellar war between mechs driven by guys with bad haircuts would be kinda retarded too.

the DPRK has been in the middle of a famine since I think about 1997. Not just any famine either- this is one of those real bastard famines, Africa style. The Party has just covers it up. Guess that's what happens when you're shelling out cash for lovely russian nukes.

I think they do anime, not cartoons, there, although I'm not sure what they watch in North Korea, really.
