Boycott Beef!

Sometime in August I read an editorial in the New York Times about the beef industry. Apparently a slaughter house in Kansas wished to check for mad cow disease in their beef so they asked the FDA for the kit. The FDA however said no because it will put too much pressure on other slaughter houses to check for the disease. Basically it might be hard on big business. Is everything done for money in this country. It seems that way. The FDA is now under large criticism apparently, but do we ever hear about it? Not unless we try too. The only sensible thing to do is to boycott beef until there are mandatory checks for Mad cow. The whole FDA system should be revamped too, I would say its the most corrupt organization in the US today.

It's a sort of vegetarian meat replacement "made with mycoprotein, from the fungi family - and a relative of mushrooms, truffles, and morel, that offers a strong nutritional profile and an authentic meat-like texture."
Yum!
I don't think that anyone really takes mad cow disease seriously as a health threat...after all, two cases in a country with a population in the hundreds of millions is a ridiculously small number. You might as well worry about being struck by lightning, since the chances of that happening are orders of magnitude greater. The troubling thing here is that the FDA is not only siding with big business, it is actually preventing a company from carrying out what should be a routine health check, because it would make other companies look bad--in short, the total opposite of what the FDA's responsibilities are supposed to be. If this is true, this is a sickening instance of corruption.
I'm not going to worry about eating beef though--for one thing, I never eat beef anyway. The reason? I don't like how it tastes. And it's expensive.

Thats two times they've found mad cow in a cow. What about the millions of cows they dont check huh? You think just because they havent found it its not there? cows are rarely checked, so for all we know each year there could be dozens of infected cows getting processed, there could be done, but well never know because they dont get checked. Well we will know once people start getting the disease.

Listen. your new. Welcome to NS. But from now on source your statements where necessary. Please?
British beef? OK, they test it, but do you know how many case there are of bovine spongiform encephalitis in that country every year? Nor do I, but next door in Ireland, with fewer cows, we had 126 cases in 2004, many years after we banned feeding bits of cows to other cows, and we have had two cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakobs Disease, one a woman who lived in Britain and the other apparently developed here. It's human BSE, and as far as I know 100% fatal - one of the people has already died, I think.
Just checked, and Britain had 343 in 2004 - nothing compared to its 1992 total of 37, 280. There have been 108 confirmed deaths from vCJD there.
It's a big danger. And, because the incubation period is so long, it may have infected many more who won't develop symptoms for a long time. But, boycotting beef is unlikely to do much, as chances are that if America has a BSE problem, it's already widespread. Testing, however, should be mandatory.

I have already sworn off beef. My wife made me promise not to eat anymore, once that first mad cow case was discovered in the US. We both figured that where there's one, there are bound to be more undiscovered, especially with the poor performance of the FDA, and allowing farmers to turn cows into cannibals by feeding them their own dead.
So no more beef for me. I miss it, but a promise is a promise.
The only proof I need is logic and inference. I would rather not lose control of my brain and/or nervous system. Doesn't look like too much fun.
Later folks, gotta go get some chicken, hopefully one that was raised in a box the size of my shoe... :D

Instead of boycotting beef, buy it right form the farmer so you can see the condition of the animal. 1/2 a side of beef wiil take up a lot of room in your freezer, but the quality is so much better than anything you cna get at the store.

How much does a Half O' Side O' Beef cost?
Depends on the farmer, but usually around $250 to $300 dollars after processing for about 200 lbs of beef.

That about what I pay, but I usually go in with my family on a younger cow. Corn fed beef is the best. I only get about 200 lbs because I can't fit much more in my freezer. My parents, siblings and I all split the cost for buying and butchering the cow.
If you can get enough people to go in for all the meat, it is the only way to go.

Yep, buying straight from the farmer is definetly the best way to go, and it helps to support our farmers, in South Dakota we are very protective of our farmers. :D
