The title speaks for itself. Who was your favorite character?
(talking about the movie, not the book)
Marvin! They got the perfect voice actor for him in the movie, and he always got the best lines in the books.
haven't seen the movie but read the book. now i voted marvin cuz i thougt this is the one i meant, but not sure anymore. that manic-depressed robot? that the one? he's absolutely cool. oh mummy when i grow up i wanna be just like him.

Yeah, Marvin was my favorite. I have a distinct impression this poll will be very lopsided in his favor. (You have to admit, the voice actor was PERFECT)

I voted Arthur. He's my new hero :)
He's just so perfectly lost and adorably cute.
I bought the book in French, so as to practice a little, and even in French it's hilarious ;)

Marvin
when I started reading the books I was going through a bout of self pity, he really helped me see how pathetic I was ;)
besides that He was hilarious! something about self-depricating apathy just makes me smile (esp. when I am in the same type of mood myself)

It's so simple--my favorite character is the Guide itself. In the book, it's got all the best lines.

Marvin's good. But, probably my favorite character would be Wowbagger the Infinitly Proglonged. You can't beat going around the entire galaxy, and insulting everyone... in alphabetical order.

Marvin is always great. In the Radio series, the book, the TV series AND the movie, you have to love Marvin. I agree that Alan Rickman (Prof. Snape) was PERFECT for Marvin.
However, I voted other because my favorite was Deep Thought. :D

Well, that wasn't very clear. Besides, I sincerely hope you've read all 5 books in the trilogy, or you have no business starting a thread about the remake of the movie.
[Edit] Sorry, that sounds harsh... But still, there are so many other bit characters that appear in the books that they warrant mention. Especially the bowl of petunias/the rabbit/the owner of the club/the bat thing in the Cathedral of Hate. His name now escapes me, though...

The HHGttG trilogy contains 5 books and one short story.
Yeah, five books... Douglas Adams was (is?) one of a kind...
Marvin by far, he's great! "Life. Don't talk to me about life'. He's just hilarious.

Wierd. A trilogy refers to 3 books. That must be an ironic thing that the publishers thought of.

Not quite. Originally, it was a 3 book trilogy, ending with Life, the Universe, and Everything. But then Adams brought Earth back into the picture, and... then things got wierd...

Well, I'm sorry, but compared to the books, the movie stinks. :headbang:
If I could get the person who decided to take out almost all of the stuff in the books well lets just say : :sniper: :mp5: I know It might be to long but still. They could at least not make up 75% of the movie. Oh I voted Arthur.

I agree, the books are far better. They usually are, especially with something like this. But, most of that stuff was added by nessicity of length. If they hadn't put in all that stuff about visting Zaphod's arch nemisis, and going to Vogsphere, the movie would have been about 45 minutes long. Sure, they could have elaborated on the orignal material more, but the book's only about 100 or so pages long.

Was. The late Doug Adams died in 2001, having only written a few pages of the screenplay for the new film, but he did stipulate a lot of things to be done with it.
Personally I have always said that the original Radio 4 series was best. I heard it when it was first broadcast all those years ago, and it was fantastic! They made it up as they went along, and changed thing as they went back and forth. The books (in keeping with the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (the best selling book ever to come out of the great publishing firms of Ursa Mina)) are terrible inaccurate about each other. As he said himself "HHGTTG is now so complicated that every time I tell it I contradict myself, and whenever I do get it right I'm misquoted".
The original book was 148 pages long, and parts of it were exactly the same as the film, and others completely different. For example Trillian, Ford and Zaphod never went to visit Deep Thought. But the great thing was that in the case of HHGTTG is that it can be different for each medium. I am looking forward to seeing if they get around to dealing with Milliways or prehistoric Earth or meeting the man who rules the universe, even seeing if they can get Zarniwoop to turn up would be quite interesting. As someone else has already said seeing the Cathedral of Hate would be quite interesting...

The thing was that Doug Adams himself wrote some of the screenplay before his untimely death in 2001. And as Adams himself said, each time he changed mediums the story changed. The original radio series was the best, then the book and original televison show turned up, both differing from each of the others, and now the movie has turned up, and I hope it will encourage more people to go and read the books and hear the original series.

yes, the 5th book Adams called: Mostly Harmless-The fifth book in the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy.

Aylestone, have you ever read The Salmon of Doubt? I read it a while ago, and when I went back to watch the movie again, I saw how obvious the influence of Adam's personal views were. I'm going to have to reread the HHGttG (first book) to see what I might have missed before...
I haven't seen the movie, but I have read the books. Based on those, I'd say Ford Prefect.
For the movie or the book, my favorite is Slartibartfast all the way. He is a great character and Bill Nighy played him magnificently.
I also like how the movie did Humma.

Mostly Harmless, that was the one with the Anti-Hitchhikers Guide and Dent's daughter, right?
I thought that it was just sort of bizarre (In relation to the rest of the trilogy), and so I have yet to buy it, but I did read it awhile ago.

Yes, but only a true hitchhiker knows the true question... :)
Suprisingly, about 90% of people I know actually recall the question improperly. Which is a shame, because it puts the entire series in perspective.

It's impossible to know the true question and the true answer. If someone discovered them both, the Universe as we know it would disappear and be replaced with something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

Though some would claim that this has already happened. :D
And, actually, if you read Life, the Universe, and Everything, you would in theory know what it is. :)
