Oh, come on. Soviet union oppressed all of it's citizens. It was all about oppression. They just wanted access to Afghanistan to oppress a few more. Also many if not most of the objectionable things the US did were because we had to protect ourselves, western Europe, and the rest of the world from Soviet aggression. Soviets are responsible for all the problems you complain about.

That said, he isn't far wrong about the rise of al-queda in Afghanistan being largely down to the 'States funding whoever was running an insurgent campaign against the Soviets at the time. A few of his other points seem rather dubious, though.

So are you saying that the Communist invasion of Afghanistan was justified because the Soviets were helping their "comrades in distress?" That's got to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

And blaming the ills of the world on America doesn't really make much sense, when you consider the fact that one of the first things the Soviet Union did after WWII was acquire nuclear weapons technology and start trying to spread their Communist doctrine to the world, by hook or by crook.

And how can you blame America for conditions in the Middle East? The responsibility for a region's well-being relies on the inhabitants of that region and their governments, not on America. The Middle East need not be poor and downtrodden--the oil reserves there have been churning out money for their respective governments for years. The problem is the inefficient distribution of oil wealth, not lack of it.

Oh, they get something in return. The people who run those countries and who run the oil wells get paid. If they don't share the wealth with their citizens what can we do? Invade? Then you'll call us imperialists for that.
