The boy from Titahi Bay in Porrirua, Wellington, who made it big.
Porrirua which is about 15-20 mins drive from where I live, is regarded as the roughest part of Wellington. Just down the road from Titahi Bay is Cannons Creek, which is renowned for it's violence and particulalry tough nature. I guess Cannons Creek is Wellingtons closest thing to a "ghetto", although shootings are not often.
How perfect it is then, that a Titahi Bay boy should win the US Open and the World Match Play Championship. I'm not so sure about his upbrining, but it would have been very modest. To succeed like he has, shows that against the odds, great things can happen.
As far as I'm concerned, as LOTR was fantastic for NZ's image and tourism, Michael Campbell has showed we're not just a nice country with pretty sheep and nice scenery, oh no. Despite our size we too can produce top quality athletes who can excell at the highest level.
Presidents Cup, watch out, the New Zealander is on his way.
