Intellectually that is. I finally got around to subsribing to the New York Times last week and OH I am loving it. Great news that gets spit out with speed that puts live TV to shame, whitty editorials that make you laugh, cry & join in the bullying and a general outstanding paper.

New York Times, where have you been all my life? I just cancelled my subscription to the godaweful The Australian.

Do you guys (Americans here) have any other decent newspapers I should be blowing my money on?

I'm sorry, but given the fact I just started reading it, I really can't recall how the New York Times covered East Timor... :p

Depending on how you lean politically I'd reccomend the Independent (left) or the Telegraph(Torygraph) (right) both are British papers and I think both have an online version.

Personally I read the Indie being something of a left winger but from experiance I can tell you that the Telegraph is exceptionally well written even if I don't agree with everything they say.

i dunno, maybe we should try it out? i dunno what's the crappier paper in melbourne, but in adelaide, i'd try it out with a sunday mail, it's probably better for that then reading (that's not saying much, though)

The Herald Sun. Though we could just use the Australian. It's a Murdoch paper, after all.

The Times can be a bit conservative. If you get the Washington Post, too, it should balance things out. The Post is the paper that broke the Watergate scandel and some of that investigative tradition still remains, even in the age of infotainment!

true, but doesn't it cost too much for that purpose? at least the sunday mail is only $1.70, though the only usefull bit is the tv guide

If you like business/capitalism, the Wall Street Journal is great! It's the big US financial newspaper, though, so you won't find much coverage of regular current events...unless they threaten to upset the markets Americans are invested in somehow.

The ads in it are another thing I like. It's thrilling when companies are actually seriously advertising things like private jets, yachts, Tiffany jewelry ("from $5,000 - $1,000,000") and massive multimillion-dollar estates. The knowledge that some readers are seriously considering those offers, is a tangible reminder of how financially successful a person really can get. I find it motivating.

Politically, it's very Republican, so if you're not, take extra blood-pressure pills before reading the editorials. And as the biggest US financial daily, it's 100% Capitalist by definition.

Ah, well, I "liberate" copies of the Australian from uni. It costs me exactly nothing. :D

(They have a deal on for students where you spend $10 and you get a years supply. But they never check the card that you get with it, so I just walk up and help myself. :p)

They used to pride themselves on not leaving people's hands covered with ink...but I suppose it would smear under more "extreme" conditions ;) And now that they've allowed color ads in, the smearability factor has almost certainly increased...

Ignoring the New York Times articles where they blatently lied. I've noticed that the news isn't very accurate. Especially when they talk about the midwest, Christianity, and conservativism. Yes, I know it has a liberal bias, but that's not what I'm refuring to. I wonder if both the liberal bias and their lack of understanding of midwestern culture have a similar cause of not having a diverse staff? I really think these people never leave New York nor interview, or pay attention to people from the middle of the country. I like to read these articles. They are entertaining. Especially the ones on evanglical Christianity. It's so absurd that its quite ammusing.

All that said, the New York Times is my favorite Newspaper. None of them do I find very accurate. Every now and then they have a good article. Their science coverage is excelent. They do butcher it a little, but at least they seem to get the general idea of what the scientists are talking about (I haven't seen this in any other newspapers). I look forward to the Science Times section on Tuesdays. They had an article on abortion recently, which I was pretty impressed by. Especially since they usually come across as biased towards the pro-choice side. The article seemed pretty balanced, and actually seemed to be interested in capturing the harsh reality of women who feel pressed to make such a decision instead of just pushing a political agenda.

Yeah, I thought this was a whole other thread :(

It seems more and more anonymous decisions are being made these days. Threads just get closed or changed around with out anyone giving a reason, or saying anything at all. Scared people might know who you are when you make a shit decision and you then have to justify it?

Yeah I noticed that one. No comment. Nothing. By the usual standards of this forum, that thread doesn't seem that bad, so why the close? Is it just a case of picking and choosing random threads now? Bizarre.

It's getting ridiculous, but we can do nothing. How does it look for new posters, though? They make a thread, and it gets inexplicably locked....

I suggest reading at least three newspapers/magazines, one left, one right, and one which truly tries to present the news in an unbiased way. Somewhere in all of that the truth lies. :)

I've decided that Al Jazeera is the only truely neutral news source.

Americans think that it's just a propaganda machine for Osama, and Donald Rumsfeld said as much. The former Iraqi information minister refered to it as "American propaganda" and the channel has been banned in a few middle eastern countries due to criticisms of their regimes and western looking female staff. It has also been critisized in the arab world for giving airtime to Isreali officials.

I feel that any news source that both sides think are biased towards the other is the truely neutral source ;)

Oh? S'plain dis, please! :)I'll use two German newspapers: TaZ (Tageszeitung) is a socialist, publicly owned newspaper. The BILD Zeitung is a conservative paper. Now, judging by the political content of these, they should both be similarly reliable. The BILD, however, publishes stories that are either false, disguised commercials, exagerated, or written purely out of revenge because a celebrity refused to give in to their blackmail. TaZ is mainly biased against business and free market capitalism, and doesn't resort to the tactics that the BILD does.
Look for things like catchy phrases, articles formulated as though they were editorials, and pictures (Bild, for instance shares a lot of characteristics with children's books: Lots of pictures, little text, simple language). The format of a newspaper will usually tell a lot about it's content. The same goes for TV channels. The flashier and cooler effects, studio, and display of a news program, the less reliable it likely is. In the end, most news caters an audience, and you need to look for indicators what that audience is: those that want to hear what's going on, those that want to hear their opinion, and any in between.

It's the Fox News of the Islamic world. Fair and Balanced, as long as you accept the principle that the Islamic world is constantly oppressed by western imperialist conspiracies and that's the only reason for their lack of success.
