What to do with sardines?

And no, pizza is not an option. Fish on pizza is just weird.
I recently bought some sardines to see if my cat would accept them as a treat. The verdict was a resounding no, he doesn't care for fish.
So I have a can of fresh sardines from Nova Scotia, non-salted, non-spiced, and I need a recipe. Any ideas?
Throw them away or feed them to your cat.
(I'm biased though, I can't stand fish)

In the UK, sardines on toast is a classic snack. That's all I ever do with tinned sardines. (Ground black pepper is a must.)
If you're not keen on the toast idea, and they're reasonable quality, you could have them with a simple salad.

Personally, I'd just eat 'em straight. Erm...lessee...you could try cooking them in a pan with some spinach, mushrooms (I use spinach and mushrooms with a lot of things), olive oil, and a touch of red wine. That seems to me like it might taste decent. But I don't know any real recipes.

Try coating them in seasoned flour and deep frying them until crispy - I think it's similar to something they do in Spain

That's what I usually do. Don't forget to brush your teeth afterwards though...or at least have a breathmint :p

Hm... I've been wondering. If sardines are oily enough, do they burn? Could you make candles out of them? :p

If the applied flame is hot enough :p , well nothing more romantic than a candlelight dinner with sardine-smelling candles ;)

Ok, you need some sausages, bacon, eggs, can of beans, peeled plumb tomatoes, and some toast.
Got it? good!
Now,............ throw away those sardines and make yourself a full english breakfast. :D

I do apologise, that should be baked beans.... as in Heinz baked beans. A can of which looks like this (http://www.eurocosm.com/Application/Images/Newpics/02PAC46md.jpg)
Actually heres a full english with beans (http://www.cameronsbritishfoods.com/images/englishbreakfast.jpg)

You really, really do not want to know. This is, after all, the country that gave us Monty Python and Douglas Adams .... who knows what zany things they may do with sausages and beans. Probably drive them around on the highways while Mary Poppins sings to them.
Or not ...

Beans are rarely eaten for breakfast over across the pond.

Nah, I only know what grits are because I remember them being mentioned in that film 'My Cousin Vinny' with Joe Pesci. I guess in Europe we think that if you haven't had soemthing that gives you gas by 11 am then there is something wrong with you.

With cheese. Cheese goes with anything in fact, including Marmite. Also, it goes well with mullerice sandwiches.
Anyway, back to the original point...sardines. Erm...you got any other pets, apart from the cat? If not, try frying them in beer...I suggest Newcy Broon. It works for bacon...

I simply eat them as they are or add them to my rice for dinner. They are a great sourse of Iron, Calcium, Phopherous, Proteins and Omega 3 fatty acids.
My cats eat them as well as an occasional treat :)
well i'd go for the throw 'em away as fats as possible option as well. you might wanna put on gloves, hold your nose and try not to look while doing it, but then you should be fine.

Sardines? You just eat them. Or you can put them on toast, or in a sarnie. Tomato sauce might work well.
The deep-frying thing sounds nice, too.

Don't forget black pudding, fried bread and plenty of brown sauce. Possibly mushrooms. Bubble and Squeak if you've got the necessaries, too!

If they were fresh you should barbecue them with nothing but salt. It goes excellent with roast paprika salad and boiled potatoes. Its what we do in Portugal.
The canned ones can be put on a salad for extra taste (to the salad i mean) or eaten with bread if you are camping or in the army. In reality canned sardines are normally a last resource. You should try the fresh ones.

Fried leftover vegetables. Mostly potatoes, but whatever you had for dinner last night.
There's a recipe here (http://www.recipesource.com/ethnic/europe/british/00/rec0039.html), but it's one of those foods where a recipe is kind of against the spirit of the thing ;)

I just eat them as is, perhaps between two crackers. If I have no crackers, I prefer the sardines in mustard sauce. By the way, my cats are crazy about them. Yours must not be a real cat!

On toast with melted cheese and Marmite is bloody nice, especially with a big dollop of Heinz BBQ sauce on top.
Other than that, the only thing I can think of is sew them into the curtains at a mate's place. Or under their car seat. Works best in hot weather.

Sardines on crackers with cayenne pepper is always good. Or, you could always flake them and use them instead of tuna in your favorite recipe.
On a completely unrelated note, the best way to eat grits (or drink coffee, for that matter) is no butter, and with a big spoonful of molasses mixed in. Nummy!

Expanding on the deep frying idea a little....
Make tempura with them. Make a batter that is thick enough to hold some things together (sort of) and then throw in the sardines, fresh greenbeans or asparagus, maybe a little bacon, take the new mix out by the handful and deep fat fry it (or just in a pan with a lot of oil if you do not have a fryer).
Tempura is fun to experiment with, you could mix in anything really, but those are the that struck my fancy while writing this.
