but i like "nothing else matters"
Whoever likes Metallica is a turdmonger. They even admit themselves that they can't play worth shit. I'd rather listen to Richard Clayderman than those useless smelly pampered bastards.

Everything Metallica did, up to, and incuding And Justice for All, is brilliant.
In fact, so brilliant, they may be "the Beatles of Heavy Metal".
After Justice.......
Some of the worst albums ever recorded.
Absolute shit.
My favorite Metallica song:
"Damage Inc."

I never got this attitude to Metallica. In fact, if anything, I'd call them the Sampson of heavy metal, because no matter what they do, people despise them for cutting their hair for the Load album. This has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the work (sure, Load has a different and more Nirvana-esque sound to it than does MoP or KTA, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing; there is only so much you can do with the really, really hard-core thrash sound before you're just making noise), and everything in my mind to do with the fact that fans who grew up with them couldn't stand the fact that they weren't producing exactly the same music as before. . .which is what most of us under 30 mock groups like Kiss for. It's almost like a Catch-22 for them, because no matter what they did, they would have been derided. If they split in '91, people would have lamented that they broke up too soon. If they didn't change, they would have become tired has-beens. If they did change, they would be blamed for "selling out."
To be honest, I would say that there is one and only one thing Metallica did wrong, and that was to get rid of Dave Mustaine. To be fair, however, Kirk Hammett is still a pretty badass guitarist.

Fade To Black, One (of course) and Mama Said...... yes Mama Said....
Personally though, Although I do rank Metallica as one of the truely great bands..... I never ever listen to anything by them anymore. Metallica is such a played out band at this point I always change the station or turn the radio off if one of their songs comes on. And I NEVER listen to anything by them just to listen to it heh.
Odd, for like a year the black album was the only cd I listened to.
Sanitarium (Master of Puppets)

Fade to Black is my favourite song. But it is a difficult decision. Some of my other favourites are One, Battery, Sanitarium, Damage Inc., The Four Horsemen, No Remorse....etc.
One would have to be my favourite by them as well.
And shoot me, but I like Wherever I May Roam.

I agree. I think that is good.
I am not a fan of the "heavy" side of Metallica, my favourite is Enter Sandman.
Sad but true is also good, the beginning of The Unforgiven is really cool, and Nothing else matters is one of my favourite ballads.
As you may see, all these are from the black album, which is the only one I have bought, so I'm not a "real" Metallica fan.
PS: Excuse my poor choice of words and spelling errors (if any), English is not my first language. :)

Not sure, but I can tell you that my LEAST favorite song is Unforgiven II.
The day they butchered an old Irish shanty into a metal farse, we all died a little inside.
I guess we have to agree to disagree.
I think Metallica's version and Thin Lizzy's are really nice.
My opinion is that the most boring versions are the ones that really "butcher" it. And by the way, I've always thought of "Whishey in the Jar" as a drinking song, not a shanty.
If that isn't the song you're talking about, then never mind. ;)

'Enter Sandman', 'The Memory Remains', and 'Blackend' are also good.

Let me tell you why I have this opinion.
I dont care if Metallica puts out a thousand albums, in a thousand styles.
I dont care if they grow hair to thier asses, or horns from thier heads,
The fashion is irrelavent to me.
I judge them simply by the music they put out.
Some "Elitists" will tell you that thier opus may well be "And Justice for All", although, not in my opinion.
However, lets go with that for the sake of arguement.
Listen to the music itself on Justice.
There is one radio-friendly song on the album.
and its even too long for most stations to play.
"One"
Consequently the video as well airs on MTV.
The songs themselves show the most melodic and actually musically graceful, thet the band has ever played, with such songs as "To Live is to Die".
and of course, more of the metal standards such as "Harbringer of Sorrow".
All in all, an thoroughly charged album with instrumentational genuis, and lyrics of an actual thought-provoking nature.
Next, we have the Black Album.
Where are the crunching heavy riffs, laden with a haunting melody, accompanied by crashing drums, and poetic words of life?
No..we get :
"No more..crap rolls out your mouth again, havent changed your brain is still gelatin."
Is this even the same guy who wrote the words to "Sanitaruim"?
Although certainly commercially sucsessful, the album was lacking in inspiration and delivery.
At best, it was Metallica watered down for the masses.
Load, and re-load...aptly named, I think.
St Anger....whooboy...where to begin?
This album is a stark example of when a band has run creatively dry, and should just stop.
Gone, are the moving lyrics.
Gone are the impeccable timing of the thundering drums, replaced instead by offbeat crashing on what sound like trash can lids.
Gone are the tasteful and melodic solos of Hammet.
Gone is the understated rythmn of Newstead, replaced instead the also competent Trujilio. (although I dont think he actually plays all the tracks on St Anger.)
All told this is probably the worst "metal" album of all time, and not just for Metallica.
When you have to hire a shrink, to hang out with you, just so you can keep working, whats the point?
St Anger features the band going off in yet another direction, and failing miserably.
The lack of actual creativity is apparent, and what you have, is an album that is actually annoying to listen to.
Nothing of what made Metallica sucsessful gets to shine through on this album.
So, in answer to your question, what made me hate them, was that with each effort they produced, we got to hear less and less of what makes Metallica good.
Every band hits a point where they no longer have the creative spark to produce a great album.
Metallica hit that point about ten years ago.

I agree with Keruvalia. The cover of "Whishey in the Jar" was truly shite. Replacing the rhythm clean guitar with sludgy powerchords was a big mistake, and the vocals are nasty.

for the ,most part i agree, though i think you're being a little tough on the Black Album - its crunchingly heavy and does have many songs with still great lyrics. very catchy and universally liked songs - i would say, for the most part, the album just has good music. but its not their best by a long way imo
but you're especially right about st anger. its shit.
and it was Bob Rock, producer, who played bass on that album, FYI.
i mean its not even an apt name for the band anymore - what do they have to be angry about nowadays? they're richer than hell! that, for me, is the underlying reason why the album is just so fake - they're just putting on an act to try and get back to their glory days (whether its for money, fun, fame or (god forbid) actually the music) but it just doesn't work.
they should have stopped just before Load imo.

Im so critical of The Black Album for two reasons:
One: Its SUCH a departure from the creativity of the previous album.
Two: Its almost too catchy.....like..on purpose....
The album was commercially orientated.
It was made to sell records.

oh i totally agree with that, but because its catchy you can't help but listen to it happily. its kinda the 'easy listening' version of metallica and, bizzarely, i both don't like it and love it because of that...
but if i were to put on any metallica album this one definatley wouldn't be my first choice (probably 3rd or 4th).
