Who listens to french music? Do you have any favorite artists?
j'aime Coralie Clémente et Ann Keren. J'ai entendu une chanson de Paris Combo. je pourrais acheter leur CD.
I listen to some French music, and particularly like Pascal Obispo, Natasha St. Pier, France Gall, Mylène Farmer, Edith Piaf, Garou, Hélène Ségara, even some of Céline Dion's French stuff is pretty good (her "Dion chante Plamondon" where she interprets some of Luc Plamondon's best songs is a really good album, actually, and a far cry from her English crap)...
I have a CD from Manau, but I haven't listened to it since I was 14...
Charles Aznavour and Edith Piaf are two of my favourite recording artists ever, French or otherwise.

When I was in Renes (SP?), I went to this restaraunt right near the train station, and they were doing French Karoke. Possibly the funniest thing I had ever seen.

i know that this is the french thread... and i learned about Johnny Halliday (sp?) when i was in Paris.
Whilst in Italy I heard songs by Nek (Ci se tu or something like that), Paola y Chiara (Vamos a Bailar)... and a slow song by a female called "Racontame" or Racontare" or something like that. this was during the summer of 2000.
also a hilarious, oversung song by this male singer... hilarious video where he's blown up at the end... song called Lo Ci Saro (lo chee saro).
I know...Noir Desir...and Renaud...and Saez...and that's all I can recall.

8 posts and I'm the first to mention Serge Gainsbourg or Francoise Hardy. For shame.
Also, Brigitte Fontaine made some lovely experimental pop albums in the 70s.

Has anyone ever seen the movie Amelie? It is a French movie with an awesome story and soundtrack. If anybody has heard this soundtrack, and some of the noted artists, do any of the noted artists sound like the artists off of the Amelie soundtrack, or know of any that do?

I enjoy Edith Piaf. They played her music in Saving Private Ryan. Best part of the movie. It's what me me decide to buy one of her CDs.
I'm sure I listen to some other French artist, but am not sure. I do plan to get into some French metal bands, but haven't done so yet.

My favorite from France is probably Olivier Messiaen. Not exactly the most recent, but I don't know too much modern French music.

I've been listening to some Natasha St-Pier, Carla Bruni and Isabelle Bourday (great voice). Also Alizée from time to time. Oh, and April March, although she's not French.
Hey, foreigners knowing about modern French artists!!! :fluffle:
Here in Netherlands were I live, people only know about singers who died at least 15 years ago; according to them, French song is old crappy tunes, when, IMO, it has never been so dynamic.
So kudos for the ones who know about _Saez_, _Carla Bruni_ and _Noir Désir_!
In fact we have some trends:
- R&B and Rap; this is what you are mostly to spot on French TV music channels (M6, MCM, etc...) But strangely enough, no-one above 18 is buying any of these; Exceptions: _MC Solar_ and _ IAM_
- Rock/Pop; is going a bit quiet now, was very strong 3/5 years ago. Especially _Noir Désir_, whose live recorded in 2002 is finally out!!! (Oh, Heaven...) But do not forget _Mickey 3D_, _No one is innocent_ and the unfortunately disappeared _Kat Onoma_
- Song: now, here we have the choice: their leader is _Dominique A_, and with him come _Bénabar_, _Vincent Delerm_, _Jeanne Cherhal_ We really have 100s of them, but I have to admit you have to understand French, otherwise you will really miss the point.
- Special: some combos like, as mentionned by someone else, _Paris Combo_, _Les têtes raides_, _Java_ (which in France is a dance, not coffee, called kawa...)
- some "ethnic": _Alan Stivell_ (celtic from Britain), _I muvrini_ from Corsica, _Zebda_ (arabic, kind of...)
- For the fans of Amelie, you don't want to miss _Yann Tiersen_
- Dead singers: _Jacques Brel_, come on people, you forgot him!!! _Edith Piaf_, _Barbara_, _Renaud_ (not dead, but he changed his mind about the bourgeoisie, so he could be dead as well :( )
Really, it is alive (even the dead ones, check the disk _Aux suivants_ a tribute to Jacques Brel by the young generation.)
I am not sure that was the case 15 years ago, or maybe I am getting old and start to appreciate better more subbtle things.
Not my intention of making any kind of advertising, but the website of FNAC (www.fnac.com) is your friend in this case. Just don't be shy, disk in French is disque ;)
(at the same time, you notice that we don't dislike everything that is English  )

Thomas Fersen, Vincent Delerm, Yann Tiersen, Benabar.
I love french music.
_ IAM_
Oh, I remember a song from them I heard on the radio a few times. It was a mix of French and English and I think it went something like
"Dès le départ, faut que tu comprennes
Understand that Redman got a gun
And when I cock it back, FIRE, I am, somebody
Roll up, *something something*
Yo, right off the back, I want y'all to know
Que cette équipe secoue les têtes(?), y'a le fire dans le show
I am, somebody, sens l'atmosphère, la haute sphère, la sale rime Rhô"
It had a good beat!
So kudos for the ones who know about _Saez_, _Carla Bruni_ and _Noir Désir_!
Haha, knowing some French people helps a bit. :p
