Well, time to fight another battle!

Eutrusca

My prostate biopsy came back positive. I have cancer on the left side. Now begins another war, another battle. I go in soon for a bone-scan, which will indicate whether the cancer has spread or not.

If anyone is interested, I'll keep you informed as this battle progresses.

By God, I'll never frackin' surrender! This may conquer me, but it will never, ever defeat me! Hell, I'm too frackin' mean to die! :D

Thank you. I learned early on that life has to be faced with courage, conviction and humor, and that sometimes the only way out is through. This is one of those situations.

Next month, I start a strenuous exercise program, aimed at rebuilding the magnificent physique I had when I was 53 ( smile ). I am also changing my diet to almost exclusively cancer-fighting vegetables. I have a few tricks up my sleeves and was gifted with what amounts to an almost unconquerable spirit. If it's at all possible to win this battle, I will.

A key component of any conflict is the support of the people who care about you. I include my NS friends among those and will, from time to time, draw strength from your friendship. This is something I value very highly indeed. Thank you!

Eut, have a look at "Colloidal Silver" using Google (just for your info, since you asked).
But, best treatment as I have heard (I am not expert) is the insertion of a small radioactive pellet straight into the prostate using a needle, apparently no operation. Keep yourself informed. Some incompetent practitioners out there. Seek "second opinions".

I'm not worried either. Ultimately, we all lose this particular war, but the individual battles are winnable. Fear being a foreign emotion to me, other than when I'm being shot at or jumping out of airplanes in flight, this is an almost new experience for me. Yes, I admit it, although at first I styled it as being "apprehensive." LOL!

I'm really sweating out this Tuesday's visit to the doctor. This is the one where he sits you down and tells you whether your cancer has spread or not, outlines treatment options, and tells you what your chances are. If that won't pucker your fourth point of contact, nothing will!

The really strange thing is, I'm not so much afraid of having cancer, even cancer that may have spread, as I am of being afraid. What a strange feeling! Scared of being afraid. Almost sounds like some variant of the ubiquitous "oxymoron." Wierd.

Interesting fact about those with prostate cancer:

"Because prostate cancer is a relatively slow-growing cancer, the 5-year survival rate for prostate cancer diagnosed at all stages is 98%. The relative 10-year survival rate is 84% and the 15-year survival rate is 56%."

So I have a slightly better than 50-50 chance of living another 15 years? Hell yeah, I'll take those odds! :D

Another interesting fact: "It is estimated that there are over 2 million American men currently living with prostate cancer."

LOL! Yeah, he is. General Honore is a trip! :D

Fortunately, there is no lack of things to do. I have a new job workinig online, for one thing. It's only going to earn me about $500/month, but that's $500 more than I've been getting, so it's kewl.

I also have a large family, all of whom I love very dearly, and will be spending more and more time with them.

There's been this book I've wanted to write for a long time, and if ever there was a time ... ! :)

I suspect I'm going to abandon my plans for a Ph.D., though. Just doesn't seem worth the effort now, and besides, when they begin treatment for this evil that has invaded my body I will be concentrating on doing everything I can to get better. :)

Nahh. I've already made my decision on that issue. I no longer have any GI Bill money, so I would have to pay for it myself, and all the money I make between now and ... whenever is going to pay off debts, mine and my kids. Any insurance money and money I make after the debts are paid will go into a trust fund for my ex and my grandchildren's education. I've been doing a lot of heavy thinking lately, and I've decided that the Ph.D. would only be a "nice to have." Making sure my ex and my grandchildren won't go without is now at the top of my priority list.

I think the most difficult part of this entire episode is the "not knowing." Once I know for sure the cancer has spread, then I'll be able to focus on beating the damned thing. If it hasn't spread, then it'll just be that much easier to beat. But this psychological and emotional equivalent of suspended animation is enough to make the Pope cuss!

Taking my cue from military tactics ( DUH! ), I intend to engage the enemy with a multi-pronged attack: strenuous exercise, a diet heavy in cancer-fighting vegetables ( broccoli, carrots, etc. ), a total cessation of smoking ... forever, heavy emphasis on humor ( laughter, believe it or not, is a cancer-fighting technique! ), and whatever regimen of treatments is ultimately recommended by my doctors. As I did in combat, I intend to hit the enemy hard, fast, and continuously ... give it no time to recover or regroup.

When the "treatments" begin to take their toll, as they tend to do, I will have to rely almost totally on will ( sometimes referred to as "stubborness" ). Fortunately, I have always seemed to have an excess of that particular trait. In the final engagements, I will simply allow myself to get extremely pissed off! ( You wouldn't LIKE me when I'm mad, and neither will this shit! ) :)

And I intend to take NO frakkin' prisoners! :D

They are obviously therefore, not subject to the usual time and space limitations! :)

Let's only hope your future is full of even more blessings! :)

Why is it that, when you want something to happen, time drags like a sledge, but when you're not looking forward to what's on the way, it's like an F-15?

This Friday, I go in for a colonoscopy. ICK! I am NOT looking forward to that at all! It's going to take about three hours, they say. What in the world do they expect to find in three frakkin' hours, for God's sake? I've seen oil wells drilled in less time! ( And there's some similarities! LOL! )

I had an upper endoscopy last year before I had my gall bladder removed. I have no recollection of the procedure. I think it was versed they gave me that wiped my mind clear.
Its likely you wont recall the procedure.

A good thing about the colonoscopy- if they do locate polyps, most times they can remove them as they go. The test can be the cure at the same time.

Best wishes.

Too much on your mind, I know that well. I usually take a long walk at this hour. Then sometimes a shower when I get back. Then sometimes, I sleep.

I had to start my fast the night before for a 9 am procedure. Nothing after 9pm. Keep in mind-mine was an upper endoscopy-they insert the camera down your throat. Yours may call for a longer fast, I dont know. I've never had the colonoscopy. I'm not due for a few years. Anyone I know thats had one told me afterwards how foolish it is to put off. Thye are effective and you get over the experience quick. Especially if it helps you.

SIGH! This doctor's office is administratively challenged! I called them this morning and asked them if there was anything I needed to do to prepare for this procedure. They said, "Didn't we give you the information sheet?" I answered, "Not that I remember. I may have misplaced it, but I don't remember getting one."

Turns out I can't eat anything between this morning and 9:00 tomorrow morning, can't drink anything dairy or anything "red," have to take laxatives, etc., etc. Good thing I called them as soon as I woke up!

Additionally, they said I have to have someone drive me over and then pick me up after the procedure, 'cause they're going to give me drugs! Groan! Had to scurry around and find one of my children who could do that. Plus I have to walk down to the pharmacy ( about a mile ) and pick up the laxative and a frakkin' GALLON of some sort of drink!

God, I wish this extended "physical examination" was OVER! :headbang:

Just a few notes about the latest:

I had that awful colonoscopy, but the prep for it was far worse than the procedure itself. Had to take 10 oz. of Magnesium Citrate, then two laxative tables, then drink a frakkin' gallon of "Nulytely," which tastes like crap even when mixed with lots of water and a flavor packet! ICK!

Guys ... I thought I was going to crap myself to death! LOL! Groan.

Anyway, they gave me some Demerol and another drug which is an amnisiac. It makes you forget everything from moment to moment. I remember them injecting the stuff, then woke up in the recovery room. Heh! They didn't find anything up in there except two small polyps, which they removed.

Now I'm just sweating out the prostatectomy a week from tomorrow. An online friend of mine told me that her uncle had the procedure and told her to tell me that "things still work afterward, and orgasms are more intense!" LOL! Honestly, if mine got anymore intense I would prolly frakkin' faint! :D

The reality of all this is starting to make a major impact on me now. Yesterday, I went to the hospital for my "Pre-admission" laboratory work and paperwork.

Part of this process was a talk with my anesthesiologist, who was a young man with reddish-blonde hair ... even his eyebrows were blond! He had obviously been through all this many times before, and rattled off an explanation of what sort of anesthesia he would be giving me at the same time he was signing paperwork. This was ok, I guess, but I remember thinking that his "bedside manner" could stand some work.

The nurse who took my medical history was very kind and sympathetic. She also mentioned a Living Will and a Medical Power of Attorney, both of which I had been planning to have done. She saved me a bundle of money by letting me know that I didn't need a lawyer, and giving me some boilerplate forms to fill out for both documents.

The entire process, including blood draw, etc., took about three hours. For the first time in my life, I was exhausted after just three hours of talking and filling out paperwork. The only reason I can think of was that I was massively tense the entire time. The young anesthesiologist said they could give me an injection to calm me down the morning of the operation. Looks like I'm going to need it.

Well, I'm sure you know that nervousness in a situation like this works like a feedback loop--the more nervous you are, the more nervous you get. Meditate a bit, force yourself into a calm state of mind, and know that we're all thinking good thoughts about this and hoping for your recovery.

They also took out that double-damned catheter! It hurt a bit, but I was so happy to be rid of the frakking thing that I didn't give a shit how much it hurt! God, I HATE those things! Grrrrrr!

Anyway, they think they got all the cancer and have told me to come back in about 30 days to get another PSA test. If the PSA drops to zero and stays there, I'm good to go. If the PSA starts to rise again, I'll have a decision to make: either opt for radiation therepy ( or chemo, or a combination of the two ), or just ignore it in the expectation that something else will get me before the cancer does. Everyone I've talked with who had the radiation therepy has told me that it's very debilitating ... they wind up totally exhausted and weak.

Up to now, I've told my doctors to go after this stuff very aggressively. I still consider myself young, if not in years, at least physically and in attitude. This would indicate that aggressive treatment is appropriate, since I don't expect to kick off anytime soon.

LOL! Well, I'm one of those folks who hates to feel "out of control." That's why being under anesthesia greatly bothers me; my well-being is totally subject to the skill and knowledge of others. Being as weak as many say radiation therepy makes them feel gives me the willies.

It's going to be a very tough decision for me. :(

I know our paths haven't crossed until today, but let me wish you good luck and no PSA!

Speaking about chemo, now... I'd certainly go for it. On another thread I've seen you're only 62 (I'm 23 so I don't know if I should be using only and 62 in the same sentence, but anyway... :) ), so waiting for something to get you before the cancer does will only make the cancer get you in the end. Chemotherapy is unpleasant on the short term, but in the long run it's the best option.

This being said, I hope you won't need any further treatement and this discution will describe a simply hypothetical case.

For Eutrusca only: place your mouse 'arrow' on the bottom left corner of my post. Press the left button of your mouse and hold it like that, then move your hand to the right.

Eut, I'm not very experienced in life, but I'd thought to offer my advice.

They got most of the cancer. If there is any left over, it could be years before it could be a threat to you again. Hopefully, it doesn't come to that. :D

Anyway, If you do go through chemo and radiation, you will be exausted. MY grandmother went through chemo about a year ago for brest cancer, and she changed alot. She couldn't make it to the family christmas that year.

You have kids and grandkids (one of whom is really hot!), and I'm sure you would like to spend time and do things with them. With Chemo and Radiation, that time will be very limited.

Ask yourself this question. Are Chemo and Radiation treatments worth not being able to interact the way I want to with my children?

This is your decision, and I leave you with just my words.
