If everyone in China actually jumped at once, what would happen?

A small tremor in the earth felt by seismographs and possibly by people.

If they did it in the smallest possible space, a medium earthquake might occur.

Yes, I can back this up.

Your head would explode. There'd be lots of pretty colours and you'd make the front page of every newspaper on the planet.

It would mean Mao is back. When Mao says jump, everybody jumps.

Here's the Straight Dope (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_155.html) on this question:

given the principle that every action has an equal and opposite reaction, when the Chinese get up on their chairs, they would essentially be pushing the earth down in the process of elevating themselves. Then, when they jumped off, the earth would simultaneously spring back, attracted by the gravitational mass of one billion airborne Chinese persons, with the result that the Chinese and the earth would meet somewhere in the middle, if you follow me. The upshot of this is that action and reaction would cancel each other out and the earth would remain securely in orbit.

Just for fun, however--after you've been doing this job for a while you get a pretty bizarre notion of what constitutes a good time--suppose 1,000,000,000 Chinese, give or take 27,000,000, were somehow to materialize atop chairs without their having to elevate themselves thereto. And suppose they jumped off.

Having performed astonishing feats of mathematical acrobatics (requiring the entire afternoon, I might note--sometimes I can't believe the crap I spend my time on), I calculate that the resultant thud in aggregate would be the equivalent of 500 tons of TNT. Not bad, but nowhere near enough to dislocate the earth, which weighs 6 sextillion, 588 quintillion short tons.

When President Dictator of Cuba for life says Jump, everbody jumps too, or else.

But they also jump on anything that floats, rafts, boats, innertubes, floating trucks and floating taxi cars across 90 miles of shark infested waters.

Since the Mao post was posted, Fidel Castro's post fits here as well.

China does have over 1,300,000,000 billion people, that is alot of chinese jumping at the same time.

Here's the Straight Dope (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_155.html) on this question:

Hmmm, so that's it! China doesn't need long range ICBMs. All those immigrants are spread out across the world like multi-kiloton bombs, just waiting for the command. When it goes through, they'll gather together, jump up and down, and bring the cities of the world to it's knees.
