With all of the attention on Germany's election, it's easy to forget that another historic election is happening in Afghanistan. Yes, it is imperfect, but give them some room to breath. This is one of the poorest and most underdeveloped nation on the face of this earth, and yet they are doing something Herculean just by forming a legislature. And there's reason to hope, too. The current central government is starting to gain real power and a real say because of the new army. With the legislature in the mix, it can be a a government with some checks and balances as it rises in Afghanistan.

Honestly, it is surprising it was possible to even have elections in a fragile nation with virtually no infrastructure. It is certainly a feat, that will lead to more stability. The current government does have a growing national army, and infrastructure is being built from the ground up. As a wise old man with a beard would say "have patience, young grasshopper".

Indeed, most Afghanis aren't even literate. Many ballots are visual, and the candidate's names on the ballots did not even appear, but rather, symbols did in its place. Makes it even more amazing that they even tried, let alone pull it off.
