I like willow, cherry and rosewood, but I don't buy them because that's not enviromentally sound. I only buy them if they are used.

My grandmother has a place in hawaii with bamboo hardwood floors..if I ever get my own home with a yard, a bamboo grove will be planted. :D

Cedear smells nice, its easy to break and burns really well. For looks I'd go with cherry.

I like the grain found in ligher woods, like poplar and maple, but for smell, the heartwood of hickory can't be beat imho.

NB in Australia, so Northern Hemisphere woods not as readily available
I really like the smell and feel of Eucalypt hardwoods, but it is a bastard to work with (hard, blunts tools, often has knots)
Bamboo smells very exotic and is fun, if not a little brittle, to work with
For general purposes, radiata pine goes ok.
For cheap shit - go MDF (medium density fibreboard) ;)
