Quote of the day!

Eutrusca
18-09-2005, 15:34
"All teenagers are dogmatists; a teenager with a Bible is simply a more intense teenager. I relished being a prophet without honor in my own homeroom. Not long after I was saved, I took an old sweatshirt and wrote "Property of Jesus" on it with permanent Magic Marker and wore it to class. I then asked a friend to make me a large leather cross, which I wore around my neck every day, just so people knew where I stood. I prowled the school halls with a leatherbound Scofield Reference Bible tucked under my arm, looking for victims. I even took on teachers, whose skepticism struck me as a sign of spiritual degeneracy. I disarmed them with a little Scripture, skewered them with the sharpened tip of my logical modus ponens, shaking their foundations and preparing them for salvation. I was doing them a favor." - Mark Lilla

LOL! The words of a teenaged zealot... Pretty funny.

You must be one of those people who stop me on the street and try to get me to "take Jesus into my heart". I must say that I find these self-appointed missionaries to be annoying to the extreme but the good person will grit their teeth and try not to do something rash. Those people are worse than panhandlers.

'Self -appointed missionaries'? As opposed to what? Christians by definition should be missionaries (The Great Commission), so what's wrong with Christians on the street trying to get you to accept Jesus? It annoys you? I think a little time spent talking with them may be worth the salvation you'd be missing out on.

I find the reply, "I'm a Satanist." usually gets rid of them pretty quick.

BTW - not actually a Satanist, but have a healthy respect for their religion. Especially above sanctimonious holier-than-thou type Christianity.

But I am not missing out on salvation, I am continuing my cycle of rebirth.
The fact that they have to get out there and try to convert people and force their beliefs on others shows that their religion sees itself as superior, so in essence its saying that you are worse than them because you don't believe that religion. From this intolerance, much suffering continues.

Well, everyone sees their religion as superior which is why they follow it!

No, they don't consider themselves superior, though they obviously consider their religion as the true religion (Who doesn't consider their own religion true?)
They are trying to "force their beliefs" because they believe that you will go to a place of torture if you don't believe. All they are doing is trying to help, not telling everyone how superior they are.

All they are doing is trying to help, not telling everyone how superior they are.Read through it again. They may not be flaunting their superiority consciously, but in the end, their arguement is that the non-believer is wrong because they don't agree that what the believer read in a book written by people long dead is the truth. They may not say it, but they sure are implying that they are superior, and they're usually so convinced that they don't notice.

There is no possible manner to argue with a Christian in a "little" amount of time. I could spend days, maybe weeks, trying to explain the true concept of a theory and still get: "Dude, evolution is only a theory"

In the end no one wins and we only end up more bitter than before.

"Life. Don't talk to me about life."
-- Marvin, Paranoid Android.

It is an unfortunate fact that every man who seeks to disseminate knowledge must contend not only against ignorance itself, but against false instruction as well. No sooner do we deem ourselves free from a particularly gross superstition, than we are confronted by some enemy to learning who would set aside all the intellectual progress of years, and plunge us back into the darkness of mediaeval disbelief.
