Well, until they changed the law, you could start driving at 14 here, but you had to drive with a person 18 or over in the front seat. You were then able to drive by yourself at 12:00:01 AM on your birthday.

They keep telling me that there are speed limits around here, but somehow I keep missing the signs. I don't know how that could happen.

what are the laws about driving where you live; age speed and what notThere's a new law about special regulations for 17 year olds, but that may vary from state to state. The age is 18.
Speed limits are generally 30 km/h in side streets, 50 in urban environments, 100 on country roads, and up to limitless on the Autobahn (with 130 being the recommended limit).

My first time was in pouring rain, at night, with a driving instructor that was rooting for the CDU, during election time... :D
Very scary...

The thing about the autobahn is that when there's a crash, it backs up for miles. That's not cool.

In the state of texas, we can get our licence at 16, permit at 15 (with driver over 21 in the front seat, and they can be drunk, as Texas used to be a state where you could ask the offifer to hold your beer), and without permit and enrollment in school, at 18. Highways are 65 miles per hour (about 100 kph), cities are typically 30-45 (about 45 to 65 KPH), and alleys are 10 mph (about 15 kph).

I forgot the Spielstraßen (playing streets - streets where children may legally play in the street, usually found in residential areas). Speed limit is "Walking speed", 5-10 km/h.

if it had been me i would have told him to get out or shut upOh, political disagreements are much different here in Germany. We don't usually hate eachother and I got along well with him. He was talking most of the time, but that was because he was training me to cope with having passengers talk to me in real life. He'd always distract the guys testing me by talking to them so I would have an easier time glossing over mistakes.

In Mexico you can get a driving permit at 16 and a license at 18. Speed limits in the city is 40, 60 or 80 km/h depending on the street/avenue/highway; and up to 110 km/h on roads.

But in general... driving laws?... hahaha... you gotta be kidding me, right?

In BC:
-You can get an "L" (class 7L) driver's licence when you're 16 years old if you passed a knowledge test. You must drive with a qualified supervisor (must be 25+ with a valid class 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1 driver's licence), zero blood alcohol content, two passenger limit (including supervisor), allowed to drive between 5 AM to 12 PM, and an "L" sign displayed on the back of the car. You can take a road test after 12 months.
-If passed, you get an "N" (class 7N) driver's licence. Zero alcohol, one passenger limit (immediate family exempt) unless with supervisor, and an "N" displayed on the back of the car. You can take a road test after 24 consecutive months without prohibition.
-If passed, you get a full privilege class 5 driver's licence.

Pretty harsh eh?

In the UK, you can get a provisional driving licence at 17, then you have to pass the theory and practical tests before you get your full licence. While you only have the provisional licence, you can only drive if there is someone in the car with you who has had a licence for at least 3 years, and is 21+.
Speed limits (mph): 30 in built up areas, 40 in slightly less built up areas, national speed limit everywhere else unless specified. National limit is 60 on single carriageways and 70 on 2+ lanes.

Must've changed it since my day then...
Advice: don't drive like a dick before you've passed your test. You'll have years afterwards to do that.

Nope 17 (unless they changed the law again, but it was going to go up lats I heard *shrug*), unless your learning to drive a scooter, then it's 16.

Advice? It's easy...

15 1/2 permit, 16 provisional license, 18 full license. Freeway speed limit of 65 mph, drive right, pass left signs all along the roads. Not that anyone follows that law, nor do the cops do anything about it. Right turn on reds, don’t cross the double yellow line blah blah blah

Speaking of Autobahn. Eh. Its fun. Buts its still just driving. Now track days. Now there’s fun.

Hey, don't worry about it. Soon you'll be driving like a pro. A pro what, I'm not sure... Seriously, once you've been driving for about 6 months, it will just come naturally.

Let me see, Japan is 18 to get your licence, only after attending a very expensive driver's school and taking insanely difficult written and driving tests, where 75% fail on the first go around.

Japan's speed limit is 40ish in the city, up to 110kph on the expressways (in good weather), but given narrow streets and obaa-chans and ojii-sans who tend to walk in the middle of the road, it's more like 5kph.

Oh, Japan requires you to have a sticker on your car the first year you drive and only gives you a two year licence the first time around. No tickets or acidents after 2 years means you can have a 4 year, then an 8 year licence.

You can't drink and drive period, and infants must be taught to look both ways before crossing the street.

And beware of the wheel cramp zones where wheel cramps may be applied. Especially as a wheel cramp can only be removed by going to the local police box and getting the station chief to come and remove the cramp.

Beware of oddly translated driving laws books as well. ;)

Sure, learn hard to pass your test - and good luck when you do come to take it.

However, once you have passed your test you then need to learn to drive. That takes years.

Learning to pass your test in the UK has little to do with real driving, you don't even get to drive on motorways for a start. Do not be led into thinking you can really drive just because you have a full licence, it takes years of real driving to learn how to deal with modern road conditions.
