Reflection on Sci-fi Arguments...

Has anyone else noticed that sci-fi arguments tend to get far more heated than political arguments? (or any others for that matter)

It seems that nothing gets people riled up like a good discussion of science fiction.

"Tread softly, for you tread upon my dreams."

Seems apt, somehow.

Of course, the choices and opinions of sci-fi fans reveal a lot about their inner character - in some ways more openly than a psychiatric test, or even lobotomy. An attack on these beloved symbols of our inmost desires feels like it strikes to our very cores.

not just on here either. My husband and I get into some pretty heated debates about it. It cracks me up, because in the back of my mind I am always thinking "why do I even care?" but I really do care! and that makes me feel nerdy :(

I actually don't care that much about sci-fi debates. I just don't see the point.

I never understood vs. style Scifi debates.
"Optimus Prime vs. a Star Destoryer vs. The Enterprise vs. Megaman vs. the Hulk vs. the Moon!" style arguments just never made very much sense, why would the Hulk feel the need to punch a Star Destroyer?
How would he do it?
And what would cause Optimus Prime (he was the good guy right?) to fight Picard or Spock or Kirk or whomever is driving your prefered Star Trek incarnation?
And even if you can justify the HOW and WHY questions, the WHO CARES one has to come up. Does it really matter if my fictional character of choice can kill your fictional character of choice?

On the other, debates on the relative merits aren't so bad, on a logic standpoint, but, yeah, people take that sort of stuff way to seriously.

It's a hobby. Some people collect stamps. Some build model airplanes. Some play with Suspension of Disbelief and try to build working understandings of their favorite fictional universe(s).

The last group becomes a group of individuals with knowledge on a certain topic. Like all such groups, there are hangers-on and wannabes that don't really know anything but think they do, or know only one side.

Like all groups with knowledge on a certain topic, there will be major disagreements here and there. People argue about science, engineering, politics, ethics, philosophy, etc all the time. They do the same for any of their areas of interest, from abiogenisis to whether the Star Wars Galactic Empire could beat the Galactic Empire from the Foundation universe.

The difference between the other things people debate and scifi is that there are an abundance of people who understand only one side, or make judgements without study and argue based on feel. Arguments based on feeling tend to be less rational and more agressive, because there's no logical way of winning; it has to be by brute force convincing. Arguments among people who really know what they are talking about tend to be much less flameish, but the percentage of people who know : people who care is far less with scifi than with most topics.

i totally agree. for instance, i like star trek (the most) and i'm a hippie - the two go together pretty damn well (the show may as well be called "Hippies In Space", lets be honest ;)) and i won't stand for it when people take the piss out of or insult my chosen favourite sci-fi series... its like a personal attack on my character

Worse than Star-Wars and Star Trek is Warmachine and Warhammer. You would not believe the fanboys there, you really wouldn't. At least sci-fi fans try to use some level of rational logic!
