On Sept. 17, 1862, Union forces hurled back a Confederate invasion of Maryland in the Civil War Battle of Antietam. During the battle, 23,100 were killed, wounded or captured, making it the bloodiest day in United States military history.

Thats intruiging, its comparable in severity to the opening assualt upon the Somme, and yet I must profess my ignorance as to it, is it possible that American history ought to be taught in British schools?

On a happier note in American history, on September 17 1787, the constitution of the United States of America was signed by delegates from twelve states at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, PA.

Sorry. I've been in a terrible mood today. It doesn't help that I haven't had lunch and my blood sugar is through the floor. :(

Don't worry, I doubt there are all that many American students who know about Antietam :headbang:

Anyways, I have been to Antietam, got to see the Cornfield and the Bloody Lane; it was weird to think that on the spot I stood there were piles of dead Confederates to the point that you could walk and not step on the ground.

I also got to see Burnside's Bridge and the fording point a few hundred feet downriver that he could've used instead, the incompetent bastard

Incidentally, was the general an aristocrat or inbred, or, both?

Not really, you can find his bio here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambrose_Burnside), but it's apparent he was incompetent when put in charge of large divisions of men, despite his popularity.

Yeah, Burnside sucked. Once, he had sappers did a tunnel under the Confederate forces, and then detonate explosive there. It left a huge crater, and shocked the Confederates. Burnside could have won there and then. Instead, he ordered his troops to march down into the crater. They were than butchered by sharpshooters, since they couldn't get out.

Actually it was because Burnside was ordered by Meade to use the untrained white troops instead of a regiment of black troops that had been trained for that exact mission. The white troops ran into the crater instead of around it, couldn't get out and were slaughtered.

Historical facts to the rescue! :D
