The ozone hole over Antarctica grew a bit bigger than it has been, but isn't at the record size yet.

Enjoy.

There are no such things as environmental crises or environmental problems.

I am a product of corporate propaganda and bought "scientists."

Why can't we just take a plane up and pump all the ozone we can into the hole to see what happens? :p

I didn't think we'd go down like this...
At least set some fireworks off before its all over

Or maybe we can quickly evolve some ant-radiation skin.

There was an episode of Outer Limits (I think) where that happened. It was pretty kuhl.

Well you know the hole can be a good thing. It can let out the greenhouse gases. Maybe the hole has always been there, we've just now notice it.

wasnt that in rainbow six.someone mentioned it at some point in the book, one of the enviromental wackos.

That is where a lot of pollution is coming from; the OECD is pretty much flat to 1% growth while Asia is 10%.

Rainbow Six is a book? I haven't read it or played the game.

I just thought of this idea. We can make ozone right? Why not replace what is missing?

ANd does greenhouse gas really ascape thru the ozone layer hole?

I'm pretty sure I saw it on outer limits or one of the shows like outer limits. <- nvrmnd I'm not thinking clearly

Yet, the Kyoto treaty that the idiots all scream about would put no limits on Asian nations, and would have slammed the US.

Yes...right...

It's a very good point, and thank you for raising it. People seem to be raising it a lot recently. However...

"growth"

What point are we suggesting "growth" from? Like, for instance, if the USA was producing 1,000,000 *insert which ever unit you desire here* of greenhouse gases and The Philippines was producing 1,000...surely your 1% would be more than their unlimited percent, at least for the foreseeable future?

Anybody notice how the ozone hole is only over Antarctica?

So you only have to worry about sunburn if you go to the south polar region.

The sun's rays don't shoot through the hole, and then follow the curvature of the earth to the more northern regions, as far as I know...

Or do they??? ;)

That is because the rest of the world is racist against Anarticans, just like Katrina only went after blacks when Bush sent it to New Orleans.

You will further decrease the Ozone layer by flying your plane through it. And do you even realize of which quantities we're talking about? Duh!

Well you know the hole can be a good thing. It can let out the greenhouse gases. Maybe the hole has always been there, we've just now notice it.
Man, this isn't Space Balls with the great Vaccuum Transformer! It's not like you punched a hole in the atmosphere... The setting of the atmosphere in that region is just different. Double-Duh!

Damn Asian industrialized nations are ruining our Ozone Layer.
Uh, no. It was Western civilization with all its chlorofluorocarbons used as propellants in hair spray and other spray cans that did that.

That is where a lot of pollution is coming from; the OECD is pretty much flat to 1% growth while Asia is 10%.
Yeah, but 1% of much is still more than 10% of little.

Thank you! The voice of reason...

No they don't. But that is where all the bad stuff ended up (over the largest, cold landmass which influences air movement). And the ozone layer over the North Pole is also thinning. So there is signs for a hole in the North as well.

And believe me, you wouldn't want all the ice in Arctica or Antarctica to melt.
There's a reason why Greeland got its name and we're headed back there...
Inhabitants of Greenland just have realized that they can grow the first trees there again after centuries.

Oh, well that''s why I asked the question. That's how you learn. Duh! Being a jerk is not a requirement of answering questions. Now... Since you know all apparently, what quantities are we talking about?

Yeah, but 1% of much is still more than 10% of little.

Asia's emissions make up 18% of the world's, and the US makes up 20%. They've got the same amount of emissions growing 10x as fast. That's the problem.

I'm sorry, didn't want to sound like one, nor did I want to offend you. I was tired and hence very edgy yesterday.

Ozone (the "good" ozone, not the "bad" ozone encountered down here on hot summer days) is made in the stratosphere in a height of 12 to 40 kilometers.

The layer itself is really thin with an average of only 3 millimeters (= 300 Dobson Units). In the ozone hole, only 100 DU were measured at the end of September 2001.

The size of the hole (= 26 million square kilometers) is larger than the whole continent of Antarctica (= 21.2 million square kilometers) or North America (= 24.2 square kilometers).

26,000,000 sq. km * 3mm = 78 cubic km

That's a lot.
Now, the other problem is that all the chlorine (and bromine) atoms that we pumped into the atmosphere since the 60s are still floating around up there (another, if not the greatest source for CFCs was the coolant in fridges or ACs).
A single chlorine atom destroys 100,000 O3 (= ozone) molecules, bromine is even 40 times more destructive up there.
Even if we were to turn up with 78 cubuc km of O3 and could put them up there (spread out as a 3mm thin layer at the right height) all the chlorine still up there will simply dissolve it.
That's why it was so important to stop adding more CFC to the atmosphere, the effects of what's already up there will start to cease in the next 30 to 50 years.

Asia's emissions make up 18% of the world's, and the US makes up 20%. They've got the same amount of emissions growing 10x as fast. That's the problem.
Asia has a population of 3,600,000,000 people, covering 18%.
North America has a population of roughly 400,000,000 people covering 20%.
So nine times as many people live in Asia and they produce even less emissions than North America (although growing). And it's their fault? Huh. I'd say that one of you produces more than nine times as much emissions than anyone of them.

This may sound a stupid question but....we always hear news about the hole in the Ozone layer in the Antartic region. However why is there no hole in the Artic region, or are we just too scared to look.

Also the question about Aisa growth in pollution. the CFC ban was on western countries, it exclused 3rd world countries unitl 2008, I think. So hopefully then the hole might go.

It's also thinning but apparently not as bad as over Antarctica - yet...

Isn't it wonderful now that the OECD countries have abused (and are still abusing) the environment and got rich in the process, they now pontificate at developing countries about their growing abuse of environment?

Yup, it's abso-fucking-lutely marvelous!
