Major Scientific Breakthrough -- Humans Walk, not Hop

A couple of brilliant academics finally managed to spend some grant money in order to arrive at a conclusion (http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20050915/sc_space/whywewalkandrunvshoppingandskipping) that almost no one could see coming...
...simulations conclude that normal walking is simply most energy efficient for travel at low speeds, and running is best at higher speeds.
Wow, I would have never thought that a couple hundred thousand years of trial and error would have resulted in the use of the most efficient methods of locomotion. Would anyone?

This actually has meaning when you consider that scientists have been telling us biking is more efficient than walking for years.

Lewis Black used to do a joke about how his state spent several tens of thousands of dollars to determine why inmates try to escape from prison. He said that for a couple hundred most anyone would be glad to tell them. "Well the food's not that great, we don't get HBO, and a big fella named Bubba want's to dance with me."

Don't forget, you can also skip if you really want to fritter away some energy.

skipping wouldnt be a bad idea. i think it would make the world a better place. think of it, how many people have you seen skipping without a smile on thier face?...

How many people have you seen skipping along with an RPG and AK?

Walking... walking... is this the thing you do with your belly and your hands?

Walking. It might be efficient, but it's still boring and ugly.

It think it would be better if we locomoted the way snakes do. I've been trying to perfect it myself, I believe they call it The Funky Worm when humans move that way.

The hop-skip-jump athletes at track meets. Unless they win, of course. :).

I still baby crawl, much faster, but tough on the knees.

Please tell me how many millions of dollars we spent finding this out.

Please tell me how many millions of dollars we spent finding this out. After looking at the video I hope no more than few thosand USDollars. If they cannot produce better CGI than that for millions there is some serious ineffieceny going on in the research field.

My hope is that the model will be useful for some related field. Maybe Orthopedics?

That's what it's called. It's been a long time since high school track, and I was a 440 and 880 runner, anyway.

Maybe Orthopedics?Looked more like robotics although I sure it would have applications for things like artificial limbs and leg braces. Let us not forget the military applications though, we need to know how the human body works and the most energy efficent form of locomotion for for the powered battle armour.

i'm dyspraxic (its a bit crap one of the problems is that it affects spelling so they gave it a name thats hard to spell)

so i don't run in a normal manner

i kinda either bound around in a kinda high speed skip

or i run with out moving my arms

those are the ways i run quickly

I can run like you but I don't as its really slow so I only did that for P.E. (physical education for those not into cymed speak)
