Kinky Kindergarten Teacher? Yay or Nay?

Right, the "too kinky" thread reminded me of a news item I'd heard a few years ago. Some elementary school teacher told a few of her close friends that she was into BDSM, and the next thing you know (thanks to the rumor mill that any small town has) it'd become the talk of the town. End result? Her school fired her because a whole bunch of local parents had written in to complain about such a 'deviant' teaching their kids.
So anyway, I just wondered what folks here would do if they were in the same situation as the parents of this article. The word gets out that your child's first-grade teacher is into all sorts of kinky BDSM stuff. What do you do?

I don't think I would object. Unless she taught that stuff in there...
I wanna go to kindergarten :(
fuck all, what teachers do out of school is there thing, not my business, if however they were involving my kid then that'd be... just.... no.....

As long as the teacher isn't a pedophile there's no problem with whatever he or she does for fun.
As long as she behaved professionally at work, I don't see the problem. Your private life is your own concern, unless you happen to be breaking the law.
What kind of classes was she teaching?

Agreed. This is pretty much the stance that I'd take. As long as her brand of fun's legal and has nothing to do with the children in any way, that's all good.

From what I can remember (it's been years since I've seen the news item, and a lot of googling hasn't helped me find an archive of it), we're talking early elementary school here. Just assume she's teaching children who are less than ten years old.

If she includes any kids in his/her kink, kill em. Otherwise, join in the fun, just don't keep them tied up all night if it's a school night.

go to the school board and tell them to mind their own freaking business and for gods sake to stop firing people based on rumors.

sounds like it's time to invent a sex scandal involving the adminstration and school board.
'cause i heard that they took a yearly trip up to that farm where the guy died from having sex with a horse...
i also think that whatever a teacher does in here free time is not her employers or the parents' business at all as long as it legal and doesn't affect the way she's treating the kids in an inappripriate way..
but then there are many states in the US where being gay is a legal reason for firing you and/or denying you the righ to rent a flat so... even though we seem to all agree on similar stances like mine, we might not be in the majority..
Silly poll, only lets me chose one option so I was stuck with just asking for his/her phone number.
AS for legality and legal necessity of it, well many teachers have a morals clause in the contract requiring them to adhere to community moral standards. These clauses are pretty useful when a teacher announces that he or she is a paedophile.
Unfortunetely, as was explained to me after a teacher of mine was fired for being arrested for "shoplifting" a newspaper, once a measure for determining "community moral standards" has been adopted it must be applied uniformly, if they didn't fire my teacher for being arrested, they would have to rehire the teacher who had been fired a few years earlier for being arrested after shooting his girlfriend.

Kindergartens would be really nice places if it weren't for all those short people running around all over the place with their runny noses. Not only are those short people rude, they are really stupid - some of them cannot even read.

Personally, I'd be keeping a close eye on the people who complained about her. They freak me out far more than the teachers bedroom antics. As long as she doesn't bring it into the classroom, there's no reason to object.

Unfortunately, this is one of the occupational hazards teachers must face. There's no escaping it. Community members need to have confidence in you, and that often means you need to, in public, adhere to a wide range of moral standards that may not match your own. Catholic school boards tend to be a bit more invasive into your private life (living with someone of the opposite sex with whom you are not married, or being in an open gay relationship is a no no) than the public system, but it's still an issue. Which is the main reason I kept my picture out of the pic thread, and showed it only for a short time. Like it or hate it (and I hate it), teachers are in a very public position, and judged very harshly.
Learn to be more discrete if you want to be a teacher. Take your kinks out of your town, and keep your private life separate from your public life. Many teachers won't even live in the communities they teach in. It's a bit easier in urban centres.

To echo what most everyone else has said: What she does outside of work is her own business. Since she wasn't dressing up in leather in the classroom and whipping the kids, it has absolutely no relevance to her job performance.
It would be interesting to investigate some of the people who complained about her and expose their personal kinks. I'd be willing to bet that several of them have equally non-mainstream tastes.

I think firing her might be discrimination. Yea... like the illegal kind.
Don't discrimination laws end with the phrase "... and any other non-relevent criteria." when describing what you cannot be discriminated for? And one's home life is entirely non-relevant, as long as it's not brought into work.
Or perhaps one could really stretch the definiton of "sexual orientation." I mean taken literally that *might* just cover this. BDSM is both sexual, and an orientation of sorts. I don't know the precedent regarding that term, or the legal definition though.
Regardless, it's wrong that they fired her. I hope she gets a good lawyer. We could use a case on the books that says the prudishness and mindless gossip of a community cannot get someone fired from their line of work.

That is a bullshit excuse only used by the most unimaginative of bureaucrats. In other words, "zero tolerance". Pedophilia and murder would both fall under the rubric of "felony" and would have saved your teacher. It would be very easy to insert a rule of reason, but that would mean having people in charge who can be trusted to make decisions.

It would be very easy to insert a rule of reason, but that would mean having people in charge who can be trusted to make decisions. :rolleyes:No, from a legalistic standpoint, once a standard to measure "community moral values" has been adopted it must be applied uniformly. If instead of using the standard of "arrest", they had used the standard of "conviction for a felony" in the first place it would have been different. After firing my teacher for being "arrested" they could have changed the standard, but to retroactively apply the new standard to one teacher and not another would have opened them up to a major lawsuit. It is improper for governments to arbitraily change the standards by which they judge people, all people should be equal under the law and treated equally under the law, to paraphrase a famous jurist "It should be just as legal for a rich man to sleep under a bridge as it is for a poor person".

What she does in her home should not affect her teaching abillities.no i would not care.
I wouldn't care. My kid wouldn't care. Nobody cares.
What the hell? Can’t people mind their own business? Being into kinky sex doesn’t make her a pedophile. Bah. I say the teacher hire a private investigator to look into the private lives of those complaining parents, and then make a book about it. She could call it, “And They Said I was Twisted, The private lives of stuck up suburbanites.” Screw the libel suit, she’ll make enough on the book to pay it off. :p

what would I do? make sure she's not teaching that to her students. as long as she's keeping her fantasies out of my kids education, I'm fine.
One thing to realize tho, is that as the rumor spreads, it grows. So who knows what the rumor was when it reached most of the parents ears. It may have her teaching the kids the finer points of Whipping someone.

Check the classroom closet for a whip. If one is not present.... it's all good.
Seriously, if my kid's teacher wants to put cheetos up her ya-ya while singing the Canadian Anthem during her spare time, who am I to judge? It shouldn't ever be referred to during class time or in a situation where my child would see something. Those are the only times I have any say in how an adult behaves.

Man, what do people not understand about private? As long as she did a good job, she could do whatever she wants unless she breaks the law (which apparently didn't happen?). Therefore, sue'em all :D
