the name of your nation

Smunkeeville
16-09-2005, 02:45
Some of the nation names on here are interesting. Where did your nation name come from? What does it mean to you? Why did you choose it?

answer one or all.

me.... I have had the nickname of smunkee since I was 14 I don't really remember who started calling me that or why, but people still call me smunkee, pretty much everyone except my kids. I thought smunkeeville would be appropriate.

I'd say it's self-explanatory.
Bayzbollistan
16-09-2005, 02:51
Bayzbollistan

The Bayzboll was just me screwing around with the word 'baseball' since it's my favorite sport, and then I just attached 'istan' on the end to make it sound like the name of a country :)
Mt-Tau
16-09-2005, 03:03
Mt-tau= German for Mt-dew, my favorite drink.

Straughn
16-09-2005, 03:08
The name of this person i know who created the pseudonym "Jack Tarn" which turned to "Jacqueline Samantha Triele" or something like that ... had a few interesting personal pursuits ...
that landed him in a parking lot with exposed brain matter on both sides of his skull ...
and not the first time he was almost dead, since the first time was cancer ....
AGAIN, he begun reviving and is currently doing so someplace where his parents won't let him near his former colleagues.

I've got a reason that doesn't necessarily follow from the above description but i've already posted it before.
NERVUN
16-09-2005, 03:11
Well, NERV was taken (even though I can't find the actual nation), and for some reason NS was being balky on hyphens that day so I ended up with NERVUN.

Neo Tyr
16-09-2005, 03:30
Neo means new. And there are lots of Tyrs. Tyre the ancient city; Tyr, Norse god of war; Tyr the swim suits- all of that stuff. I did base it off Tyre the city though, but forgot there was an 'e'.
Avalantia
16-09-2005, 03:31
Avalantia is the name for the homeworld of my personal Warhammer 40k Space Marine Chapter. It was the first original name I could think of when making a country for NS.
I came up with the name by mixing around syllables in Avalon and Atlantis.

The Lone Alliance
16-09-2005, 03:34
I got mine from back when I was young I made a 'Blue Alliance' as a country as a school assignment. When I started here, I decided to keep the Alliance but make the name of the Country an Oxymoron.
The 'lone' Alliance. Makes no sense does it.

It's used in the phrase "Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!". As near as I can tell, it either means dead or dreaming.
New Morporkia
16-09-2005, 03:37
New Morporkia, named in homage of Ankh-Morpork from the Discworld series of books.
Melonious Ones
16-09-2005, 03:45
I used to take french and we learned some phrase that I no longer remember. I said it to a friend and he heard me wrong and thought I said something sounding like "grod the oreck melon in excess". Since I have large breasts (melons) he started calling me melon and sometimes he'd refer to me as the melonious one. That is my favourite nickname thus far, therefore my nation's name.

Everyone else seems to have a legitimate reason.....

Back in the day, (a few years ago actually) me and my best mate were N64 wh0res and one of the games we played was wcw/nwo revenge, a pro-wrestling game. One day I decided to re-name one of the made up characters. Being a southpark fan then too, I named him 'FiveassedmonkeymanVII' with the 'manVII' being added on in a spur of the moment thing. About a month later, I was discussing with this said friend what I should use for my yahoo msger ID (I just started using that again even though no one I know is ever on) and he suggested I use the fiveassed name, so I did, 'Fiveassedmonkeyman7' became my Yahoo ID. A few months later, I started playing the online game 'Planetarion' (sometime during Round 3 for people who know when that was) and stuck with the name for my planets ruler name. Using IRC became an important part of playing this game, and I was forced to shorten my name to 'Monkeyman7' for IRC. Sometime during the round, my birthday happened and some of my friends gave me an orange 'pimp' tshirt which I wore constantly. When round 4 of Planetarion started, I adjusted my ruler name slightly on the back of this tshirt to 'Fiveassedmonkeypimp7' or 'Monkeypimp' for IRC. When I started up on NS, I ran with it.
Koliconia
16-09-2005, 03:59
Koliconia is derived from my widely used Internet alias, Kolic (pronounced KOH-lick). About 8 years ago I rented a game called Gauntlet Legends which had the premade character name Koric for a warrior. I used it to sign up for some Internet game; however, I misspelled it as Kolic, not catching the mistake until after my account was created. I thought Kolic sounded better and have been known as such ever since.
Valencaria
16-09-2005, 03:59
I signed up here like 2 years ago under the country name Shrike Coast. Then I accidently let it get "purged" and I didn't know I could get it back. So I created Shrike Coast 2. When I figured out I could get the first one back, I made Shrike Coast my main nation and Shrike Coast 2 my lone puppet state. Then a few weeks later I created Valencaria and Costinastok as 2 additional puppet states. These are the only nations I have. I created a flag for each my puppet states reflecting Shrike Coast's infleuence. Below is how I came up with them.

Shrike Coast: I read about the Loggerhead shrike and liked the name so I used the Shrike part in a country name.

Shrike Coast 2- duh

Costinastok- I like the name of Vlasvidavostok(Sp?), Russia. So I decided to create a country reflecting my liking of that city name.

Valencaria- i just created a name using the letter "V" which I somewhat like and the word "aria" which I like how it sounds.

Bleenie
16-09-2005, 04:03
Bleenies - Fried potato pancakes
8 medium potatoes
1 medium onion, grated
1 egg
Salt & pepper
4 level tbsp. flour

In Europe and Russia, bleenies (or "blinis") are regular flour pancakes and are served with caviar. In the Coal Region, a bleenie is a potato pancake. Few people make them at home since they can create a huge greasy mess in your kitchen (and your whole house). That's why they are popular at block parties and church bazaars. Bleenie lines have been known to circle halfway around the block.

Peel and grate potatoes. Mix potatoes and all other ingredients together. Flatten like pancakes. Fry. Add salt to taste after cooking. Some people put vinegar on before eating, others smear on some grape or strawberry jelly.

Skid Dokken
16-09-2005, 04:09
I was going through a big Hair Metal phase, so i named the country Skid Dokken (Skid Row + Dokken), named the national animal the Whitesnake, and the currency the Ratt. Simple enough i guess.

Aquila Magna
16-09-2005, 04:23
Aquila Magna is Latin for "Great Eagle" in reference to the eagle representing St. John the Evangelist.
PopularFreedom
16-09-2005, 04:27
I have five nations here

PopularFreedom: cause I want something where the people (hence the popular) were living in a nation that was free

Trotsgrad: Trots short for Trotsky (partners with Lenin), and grad well you got Leningrad, Stalingrad... In case anyone wonders I wanted to RP a communist nation and no matter how much I got into it I could never support the policies of Lenin or Stalin with a nation after them hence why I chose Trotsky

Trebnak: Treblinka (the concentration camp) with the letters altered. I decided to make a fascist nation with a madman at the centre of it. Currently he is now deceased for the record.

Jastica: Justice with the letters altered

Xixan: No clue
New Sernpidel
16-09-2005, 04:30
My name's a tribute to the Star Wars New Jedi Order Series. Sernpidal was a major planet in the first book, Vector Prime where a major character died, and they were my favorite character, so my nation is tribute to them.

Spoiler as to who dies: Chewbacca
Nyrania Delux
16-09-2005, 04:37
Nyrania comes from NYRA, which is the National Youth Rights Association, an organization that works to lower the voting age, lower the drinking age, get rid of curfew laws, and protect student rights.

Check it out:

Northern Vulgatia
16-09-2005, 04:47
Mine comes from the latin word "vulgate," which means "popular." This is also the name of the Catholic bible (since Latin was the popular language at the time). It's northern a) because I like the north and b) because my first country, Vulgatia, got purged and I just made a new nation instead of trying to find out how to retrieve my old one.

Unspecifistan
16-09-2005, 14:21
Unspecifistan was going to be Unspecificistan - the nation that was so Unspecific that nobody knew where it was or how it was really run.

Then I put in a typo - and now it is NationStates history
Cabra West
16-09-2005, 14:26
Cabra is the part of Dublin where I live. For some reason, Cabra was rejected (it didn't exist, I checked, but whatever), so I went for the general location in Dublin and ended up with Cabra West.

The Czardaian envoy
16-09-2005, 15:57
Czardas, my main nation: Because I like Bartók.

The Czardaian envoy, my messenger puppet: Adjective, cool name for messenger.

Atharites, my other messenger puppet: named after my region, Athar, which I just made up because it sounded cool.

Steel and Fire: Guess what its government focus is...

Mauvasia: It came from French mauvais, meaning "bad", with a country ending tacked on to the end. However, it ended up a Left-Leaning College State, so it really wasn't that bad.

Walton and Cladwell: The name of the company that rules the nation.

86th Street: Well, the whole nation has just one road in it...

About 300 other puppets whose names I don't remember or don't want to tell you: Self-explanatory...

Team Xero is me and a group of my mates, particularly related to driving. It originates with the black Porsche 911 called Zero on Tokyo Highway Challenge on the Dreamcast. Then we had a nice red wine from a brand called Marc Xero, hence the X. Then I nicked the end of Europa because it sounded similar and hey presto - Xeropa

Spooty
16-09-2005, 16:05
long story.... so this one time some guy on another forum posted some random crap, he said somthing with Spooteh in the middle, much much later i was trying to think up a name for a webcomic, i came back to the Spooteh, and so Mr Spoot was born, the very same day i discovered NS and my alias Acco was taken so instead i went for Spoot which was also taken so then i tried Spooty and so it stuck.
Kroisistan
16-09-2005, 16:10
Well, it's my last name, with -istan tacked on, to make it sound more country-like.

I would have used my first name, but it just sounds better w/my last name. Plus I'm sure it's reserved.
Shamanwaman
16-09-2005, 16:17
ShamanWaman - All the other names that I chose were taken, so I fell back on my dog's family nickname.

Rebekahistan - When the whole Uzbekistan (sp?) thing was in the news post 9/11, I used to joke with my daughter that they were mispronouncing the name.... "It's not UZbekistan, it's REbekistan!".

Sonaj
16-09-2005, 16:25
It started out as a play on my real name (Jonas backwards = Sanoj, didn't sound rith so I made it Sonaj) a long time ago, since then I've made a lot of stories and characters to use in the nation, though I've only posted a few here.
Graffenwald
16-09-2005, 16:28
I believe it's the name of a German beer my friend used to drink all the time. Although I probably remembered it wrong. Graffen means Griffen anyway, which is why they're my national animal.
The blessed Chris
16-09-2005, 16:30
I was remarkably drunk and bored

However I do have a nation named Damastes, I believe that it is derived from a book I vaguely remember, and is, i think, utopian.
Intangelon
16-09-2005, 16:31
Intangelon comes from "intangible" which is precisely what NS nations are: unreal cyber-constructs with no solid presence in physical reality other than the insubstantial world of digital electricity.

I chose the "-on" ending to show love for Oregon, my favorite vacation spot, though they're not pronounced the same way. [ORE-a-gun; in-TAN-gel-on]

My national animal is the Briard, the adorable French shepherd dog adorning my nation's flag. The national currency is the gig because I'm a working musician in addition to being a college music professor.

Thanks for asking.
GOLDDIRK
16-09-2005, 16:39
GOLDDIRK was the name of the very first massive multiplayer on line game character I played for Everquest. Poor Paladin was reamed by the game and the scum l33t wussy power gamers.

Hey Cabra West I used to work in Dublin in an animation (Murakami-Wolf-Swensen) studio not to far from a pub called Whelans. I lived in Donnybrooke and loved to walk to work everyday (even in the rainy days) hell I even walked to Black Rock Beach one day. How far are you from those places?

Passivocalia
16-09-2005, 16:40
Tell you more than you asked or want to know? Certainly!

Passivocalia is the right and proper dominion of the all-encompassing Passive Voice. Going through secondary school, I in real life have always been bothered by the English teachers' restrictions on passive voice in written papers. I decided at that point that I was a "Guardian of the Passive Voice"; this same title is how citizens of Passivocalia see themselves. There is a heavy emphasis on liberal arts education while the mathematicians and scientists are generally distrusted; this reflects my personal scholastic interests (which is actually ironic, considering that the science fields are where one is most likely to find passive voice advocated over active voice... perhaps my national policy needs to be revised).

Before I go on. This is sweet, interesting twist there.

I'm a bit of a Russophile, was sitting in Russian Language Class one day when the "Gosudar" suggested that we pick up a few books... Black Earth by Andrew Meier, Russka, by Edward Rutherfurd, Natasha's Dance by Orlando Figes.

I found the book "Russka" to be one of the most informative and interesting things I read all year. Thus, Russkya, having decided that Russka was too much of a rip on on the book itself. I derive some characters and places from the book, but not many.

Properly prononuced, "Roossk-ah." There seem to be a lot of Russia-lookalikes and "Der Fuerhers" running around in NationStates.

The name of my level 91 Magic-Find Sorceress

Aretaku -Left-Leaning College State-

Bryce Crusader States - When I created my Nation I had just finished taking a University Course about the Crusades in May and I had also just watched the Movie Kingdom of Heaven. I wanted Crusader States but that was taken so I threw my first name in front.
Tyrell Technologies
06-10-2005, 10:09
For my first NS nation, I wanted something I could experiment and learn on...

The idea hit me to have a nation controlled by one major mega-corporation.

The first one that came to mind was the Corporation the produced the "replicants" in Phillip K. Dick's Blade Runner... But "Tyrell Corporation" had already been used (surprise, surprise... ;-) Hence, Tyrell Technologies... Which I decided was apt enough, since it seems to incorporate all the other probable divisions of such a business behemoth.

Phenixica came from a book im writing tho originally it was just called phenoix

Kodos and Kang
06-10-2005, 10:59
Well a friend told me about NS, and i joined a simpson themed region picked some of my favourite characters and Kodos and Kang were born, first we were the holy empire of Kodos and Kang, then the 1 acre and three sheep of Kodos and Kang, then the Antique Furniture company of Kodos and Kang, and onw I'm the Loveboat of Kodos and Kang. But i'm sorry to say that I think i'm the last remaining member of the once great region of Simpsonic Springfield. Anyone out there who was a member and is still in the game please get in contact. So I was the only one left, and being the only member of a region is no fun so I shifted and Simpsonic springfield died. a sad day for all involved which was just me really, but now I'm at a new region.
