What every boy needs to know about being a man

I had just watched Secondhand Lions the other night, and to my surprise it was very good. Not only was is amusing, but I can't get out of my mind the "What every boy needs to know about being a man" speech. I was speechless at the truth which it held about how to be a good man. I can't really speak on behalf of how to be a good woman, because I am not one nor know what they hold dear to themselves. But here's the quote and I hope all will understand:
“Hub: Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good; that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil; and I want you to remember this, that love… true love never dies. You remember that, boy. You remember that. Doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. You see, a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in."
I just wanna hear of what others think and any addendums we could add.

* That sometimes you just have to march on ... period.
* That pain is good; it lets you know you're still alive.
* That the most important thing you willl ever do in life is give hope to a child.
* That no matter how exhausted, how beat down, how discouraged, how utterly weak you may feel, there is always more; all you have to do is dig down really deep to find it.
* That women, contrary to what you may have been mislead into believing, need to know that you're strong ( and that does not necessarily mean physically strong ).
* That you should never give up, never surrender, never say "die," and take NO mother-f***ing prisoners! :D

Agreed. I watched the same movie a year or so ago and enjoyed it a good bit, especially that qoute.

I would say, "That there are things worth dying for, things worth fighting for, and things worth suffering for."

I'm gnawing on the knowledge
That I have been burnt
And I'm learning things that I
Should've already learnt
Everyone I ever knew
Was so kind and coy
I was with a girl
But it felt like I was with a boy
I can't even remember
If we were lovers
Or if I just wanted to
But I held her in my arms
I held her in my arms
I held her in my arms
But it wasn't you
I will not kill
The one thing that I love
In this world of wreckage
I look above
Help me Lord
Help me understand
What it means to be a boy
What it means to be a man

The only difference between love and herpes is that herpes lasts forever?
Hmmm. Somehow I DOUBT I would tell my sons that! Heh!
All the traits that have been mentioned so far are ones that I admire... And aspire to. Honour and strength aren't just for men.
I forget where I heard (or read) this one, but I live by it:
"When you lose everything, what's left... is you."
I'm all that I can depend on. To help myself, to help others, to do the right thing. I want to be a person who I can respect.
Hmm...
Always remember to laugh, at yourself, the world, and the sitution, because it's better than crying.
Remember that a wise man listens to both his mother and his wife, he may not actually do what they want, but he should listen... it cuts down on the arguments.
Your honor and your values are yours and yours alone. No one can give them to you, and no one can take them from you unless you let them. So try to make sure than those values and honor are actually worth something.
You'll never know anything unless you ask.
Your parents will die before you, so why are you trying to live for them?
To those who feel, life is a tragedy, to those who think, it's a comedy.
And from my grandfather, and I find it true more and more each day, "The secret to a long life of joy is to never really grow up. The secret to a long marriage full of happiness is to always keep your wife on the defensive." ;)

Another thing. For years I thought my own father was an idiot to stand for such great ideals such as world peace, unconditional love, and blind belief in worldly things. Though as I grew up, I definately learned what my original quote meant when it referred to truth and love being things worth believing in.
And to all the punks out there who think anarchy, chaos, and violence are what's important. Listen to this original punk classic:
Father, can you hear me?
How have I let you down?
I curse the day that I was born,
And all the sorrow in the world...
Let me take you to the herding ground,
Where all good men are trampled down,
Just to settle a bet that could not be won,
Between a prideful father and his son.
Well you guard me now for I can’t see,
A reason for this suffering and this long misery.
What if every living soul could be upright and strong?
Well, then I do imagine there will be
Sorrow.
Yeah there will be
Sorrow .
And there will be
Sorrow, no more.
When all soldiers lay their weapons down,
Or when all kings and all queens relinquish their crown,
Or when the only true messiah rescues us from ourselves...
It’s easy to imagine there will be
Sorrow.
Yeah there will be
Sorrow .
And there will be
Sorrow, no more.
There will be
Sorrow.
Yeah there will be
Sorrow .
And there will be
Sorrow, no more.
Belief in this is something worth believing in.

- People are inherently evil and not to be trusted.
- Avoid "good". If you stand for good and moral values, people will try to beat you down. To survive you won't be able to practice what you preach.
- Love is pointless, worthless, and meaningless.
- Power is an end, not a means.
- Do not seek truth in men, for it lies only in nature.
- Life is shit, and what's even worse is that there's nothing else.
- Try to avoid emotions. They're only weaknesses that can make you succumb to the lies and depravity of the real world.
- People are out to get everything you own. You have to be the same way to prevent them from doing so.
- Always be honest. Diplomacy is secondary to honesty.
- Human brotherhood, world peace, etc. are myths that will never happen.
...My beliefs aren't exactly the best advice for a boy or girl about to enter adulthood, but I've found them to be almost invariably true.

A good man has all the attributes of a regular man, though good man is a producer of good in the world. He has his desire to better all people, not just friends, family, and neighbors. He fights on the side of those who cannot fight for themselves. A good man is an inspiration to others that this world is good and that those evil will pay their dues.

It started out when people at my local high school formed all their little cliques and circles of friends, and I, busy with work, didn't join any. Since then I've been friendless and alone there. In addition, due to my erratic and mercurial behavior, I'm socially handicapped and therefore lose most of my other potential friends. Seeing that the social structure of the country was discriminating against me, I resolved to leave it altogether. Therefore, I am now the one lone figure that can always be picked out in $PLACE.
I will eventually work to destroy society, by getting rid of a) the media*and b) the government, both of which have caused this to happen. Then a new government, embracing the true and proper values of liberty, justice, truth, fairness, equality, peace, etc. can arise. Or none whatsoever, if it'll work best that way.

Though, you still have that belief in goodness and truth, else you would not be capable of having this desire.
And believe me, I'm not naive to being a social outcast through highschool. Students hated me because I never did work yet would ace every class. Teachers hated me cause I could show their interpretation of the material was wrong. Try graduating top of the class by 4.1% from the second to the top and yet not gaining any recognition at graduation.
Nor am I naive about the extreme hatred that dwells in this world. One of my best friends throughout childhood offered to drive two guys he had met at a concert home. They mugged him, locked him in the trunk of his car, and then shot him in an alley. The only thing that helps me to get by in life is knowing that there must be some good out there and that we all must band together.

Sorry if I'm repeating something already said earlier, but I think the following would be a good addition to the list:
When you help others, you help yourself.

You have lived by this code.
Are you happy?

Im a very young 31, and still learning many of lifes lessons.
But, the schooling has been underway for a while now, and I like to think Im learning much.
Heres some good things to know for those younger than myself, who will becoming adults soon.
1. Do no harm to those who have done you no harm, but visciously protect the ones you love.
2. The best friends you will ever have, are the ones who dont need you.
Friends that often ask you for everything, are only using you for thier personal gain.
3. The most "manly" of men, are not the ones who are stronger, or faster, but wiser.
4. The true measure of a man is not his bank account, or the supermodel he shags.
The true measure of a man, is the people he surrounds himself with.
5. The woman you should marry, is the one who makes you feel like you did on the first day together, everytime you see her.
If you have never felt this about the woman you are with, then she isnt the one you want to spend your life with.
6. Never keep your emotions to yourself, all of the time.
Be strong and silent, if you must, but never be distant from those who care about you.
7. Accepting help does not make you weak, it makes you human.
8. No one will ever love you as much as your own mother, and your dog.
9. Do not expect perfection in others. Strive for it within yourself, but all the while, know that no one is perfect.
10. Anyone with a dick can be a father, but it takes a man, to be a Dad.
If you do have children, be there for them, every minute of every day, whenever they need you.
To quote an old Creedence Clearwater Revival song:
"First thing I remember, was asking Papa why, for there were many things, I didnt know.
And Daddy always smiled, and took me by the hand, saying someday, you'll understand....
...But Im here to tell you now, each and every mothers' son, you better learn it fast, you better learn it young, cuase someday, never comes."

It's the motto of my secondary school and one that I've kept throughout my life.
"Nil Sine Labore" or "Nothing Without Labour"
That things wouldn't mean as much if it wasn't fought for.

As my contribution, I'll list the Important Things my daddy taught me, in no particular order (and with commentary in parens):
Most people are no damned good. (There are a lot of idiots out there. Most are good hearted, but they'll end up fucking you over. Learn to know the difference between the idiots and the wise.)
90% of everything is crap. (Learn to appreciate the good things. Learn to deal with everyday BS. It stinks but you have to live with it. )
Mistakes are OK. (Repeat as needed - you'll either learn the needed
lesson, learn something unrelated but useful, or bang your head against a wall.)
Learn how to talk with all kinds of people, know how to listen to what's really being said, and never, never talk down to anybody. (Everyone is an expert on some subject. If you know how to talk with them and don't insult them, but actually listen to what they can tell you, you'll learn something. This must be tempered with the earlier remarks.)
Don't annoy other without a damned good reason.
Know how to catch and clean a fish, hunt, butcher, and prepare common game, know what local plants are edible, know how to start a fire with a lighter, 1 match, and at least one "old" method. (The world's a hard place know how to get food and shelter. Know how your environment works and how to survive in it.)
A beautiful woman is usually more trouble than she's worth.
Politicians lie about everything.
You do not know everything.

How is it that this thread seems to have slid into a state the term "man" is used as a compliment and to be a "boy" is inferior.
Many rapists, thieves and murderers are men and are no less "manly" for being these things.
Many honest, strong, courageous people are boys and are no less "boyish" for being these things.
All of that is true, but a "boy" is after all not yet fully grown, which means that he's not a "man" yet. :)

About the survival skills ... excellent, excellent advice. Got a good friend who wrote a book about survival skills and am getting ready to put up a new site devoted to a new veteran's organization which willl respond to emergencies nationwide. I'm going to include his book as a resource on the site. ( I just love new projects, don't you?? ) :)

Well, THAT explains a lot! Yes it does, actually. It implies utter obedience, total collectivist community, and being a good little cog (in machine, not moderator).

And to all the punks out there who think anarchy, chaos, and violence are what's important. Listen to this original punk classic:
- snip -
Belief in this is something worth believing in.
*grins* You do realize what that song is about, right? Its not what you think, I suspect.
While I'm sure Bad Religion isn't for chaos or violence, I don't know where they stand on the issue of Anarchy, and this certainly doesn't adress that. And anywho... Why would a punk care about what someone else thought was an important value? Doesn't that sorta contradict the whole non-conformism thing?
Beyond that... Where do you get off calling Sorrow a punk classic? Its just not old enough yet (Process of Beleif came out in '01).
But I'm a bit off topic there.
- A good man knows he knows nothing and sees that as a challenge, not a deterrent
- A good man knows that any "one true way" is by nature neither true, nor unique.
- A good man reads the rules, understands them, and chooses which ones to value and which ones to throw away. A good man neither accepts them unconditionally nor dismisses them out of hand.

There's a damned good reason daddy made a point of both me and my little bro pushing on to Eagle Scout....
Even if you never need it in a survival situation, a one match fire makes a nifty trick to amaze people with. It really does rank up there with various juggling tricks, especially when done in the rain with "wet" wood. :)

I just wanna hear of what others think and any addendums we could add.
"That it's better to live on your feet than die on your knees"

Somewhat similar to the way I think, but it has some major differences. Here's the above points changed according to the way I think:
- People are incapable of being rational and generally incredibly stupid and are therefore not to be trusted, nor had any faith in.
- You cannot behave rationally when having to deal with people. If you truly would, people would inevitably hate your guts, as rational behavior is mutually exclusive with social norms. Therefore, unless you act like an idiot when dealing with people, you are screwed.
- Love is completely unneccessary; you can do perfectly fine without it. Also, *note: this is purely based on my observations. I have no personal experience whatsoever here* people in love will invariably act even more irrationally, and render themselves extremely easy targets for being taken advantage of. (particularly by whoever they are in love with and who they very likely foolishly will trust to a very unhealthy level)
- Power over people is an end, not a means.
- Do not seek truth in men, for it lies only in nature. Sadly however, you can almost never know completely for sure that you know the thruth, whether you do or not.
- Whenever you manage to truly enjoy life, rest assured that something (typically related to humanity) will soon turn it back into the shit it typically is. And since you cannot know for sure if there is anything beyond life, do not count on it.
- Emotions are powerful tools that can help motivate you in a number of ways. However, unless you have perfect control over them, they are guaranteed to backfire sooner or later and leave you acting and thinking like a moron, while being exceptionally vulnerable to the lies and depravity of the real world.
- People are out to get everything you own. You have to be the same way to prevent them from doing so.
- Always be honest to yourself. As for other people, be honest when you can, but be very careful; be honest in the wrong situation once and you're screwed. Generally, diplomacy is secondary to honesty.
- Human brotherhood, world peace, etc. are myths that will never happen. Atleast not unless humanity is throughoutly changed to the point where it does not even resemble humanity the way it currently is. The most effective and realistic way of changing humanity for the better would be to wipe it out.
