Need a new motto

Oye Oye
15-09-2005, 04:19
I was in a grocery store the other day when I heard the song "Don't Worry be happy". Originally I chose this phrase as my nation's motto because it is the only English expression my cousin knows and she always says it to me whenever she sees me in a bad mood. But after hearing the song I'm thinking of changing my motto. Any suggestions?

Here is a brief outline of my nation.

UN Category: Democratic Socialists
Civil Rights: Excellent
Economy: Good
Political Freedoms: Excellent

Community of Oye Oye is a huge, environmentally stunning nation, renowned for its complete lack of prisons. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 622 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

Well from song's if you want to stay in the area of reggae the best choice for your nation is "No woman, no cry".

Personally I favor Latin tags :

Inhumanitas omni aetate molesta est. Inhumanity is bad always.

and

Exigo a me non ut optimis par sim, sed ut malis melior.I require myself to not to be the equal to the best, but better than the bad.

were two runners up for my national motto.

Gotta love those latin mottos :D

Morituri noster vexillium atque imperium salutamus- About to die we salute our flag and empire. I probably wrote it horribly but it sounds right.

As for your nation all I can think of is "It's the journey, not the destination"

Although it is a beautiful song and would make a great anthem, what about my nation would make you think I should use "No Woman No Cry"?

Also, here is a good web sight for Latin phrases.

I thought it was...

morituri te salutant - those who are about to die salute you

The motto of the gladiators.

As for your nation all I can think of is "It's the journey, not the destination"

Good suggestion but it reminds me of the line from an Aerosmith song.

Sounds a lot like my nation...except the compassionate stuff lol. My people are among NS' meanest and rudest. Anyhoo one of my former mottos was "God is dead. We killed him!" and another which was my personal favourite "Power to teh sheeple!" I had a Latin one once that went "quo usque tabdem abutere patentia nostra?" which translates 'how long will you continue to abuse our patience?"

As a Latin translator, I just had to jump in here.

"Morituri nostrum vexillum imperiumque salutamus" is better. Nostrum must be accusative, and the Romans would not usually have used atque in this way.

No problem.

How about a nice fuzzy Latin motto like:

Omnia Omnibus = All things to all people.

Frustra Repugnas = You resist in vain.

Mustelam Iram In Tunica Habeo = I have an angry weasel in my tunic.

Cogito me cogitare, ergo cogito me esse = I think that I think; therefore I think I am.

Salus Populi Suprema Lex = The safety of the people is the most important law (used in ancient Rome to claim dictatorial powers)

Well it is a fairly socialistic song, but it seemed to be a fairly good substitute for "Don't Worry, Be Happy", if you cannot say "be happy" (because of the song) you can at least say "don't be sad".

Here's a latin one I once heard of:

Semper in excretum sed sole profundum variat.

it's probably wildly inaccurate, but I was told it meant 'Always in the shit, it's only the depth that varies'.

Hehe, I don't know if this is too late of a response (usually I don't go on these forums) but no I can't see your signature right now (though I have "Display signatures" enabled in my profile) and here's my sig:

Never go by looks. Things are not always what they seem to be.
You don't realize what you have until it's gone.
Organization and confidence are the keys to success.
To believe with certainty we must begin with doubting.
Life is full of ups and downs, but it's how you deal with them that matters.

And some other quotes:
Nobody is a virgin... life screws us all.

"Patriotism is a pernicious, psychopathic form of idiocy." - George Bernard Shaw
"The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it." - George Bernard Shaw

"You know the world's gonna end so you might as well be the cause of it."

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder...

24 hours in a day... 24 beers in a case... coincidence?

There is no emotion; there is peace.
There is no ignorance; there is knowledge.
There is no passion; there is serenity.
There is no chaos; there is harmony.
There is no death; there is the Force.
