Legal Rights of Robots

Desperate Measures

It's come to my attention that robots really are getting out of hand. Just yesterday an ED209 nearly shot me full of holes for not producing my identification card quickly enough. http://www.robocoparchive.com/char/ed.htm

Take what happened to Japans Prime Minister.

The law must act now as this lawyer explains.

"Recently a man in Bellevue, Washington, finding that his car would not go through some six inches of snow, became enraged and attacked the automobile. He broke out the car’s windows with a tire iron and emptied a revolver into its side. “He killed it,” said police. “It’s a case of autocide.”

Such wanton acts of violence are not limited to Coke machines, photocopiers, public telephones, and other gizmos that steal our dimes and quarters. In 1979, a sheriff in California shot a large mainframe computer for uncontrollably spewing out arrest records. As if to even the score, that same year a one-ton Litton Industries mobile robot stalked and killed a human warehouse worker who trespassed on the machine’s turf during business hours. The worker’s family sued Litton and was awarded a $10-million judgment, but the surly robot got off with a slap on the sensor."

How do we handle criminal robots? For that matter, how do we handle law abiding ones?

Robots have the right to remain silent.

I don't know why, but I have an extremely negative reaction to machines that speak. A few years ago, I came upon a talking ATM at a bank in Raleigh, North Carolina. When it started talking to me, my immediate reaction was, "I did not give you permission to speak!" :sniper: (And why the machine had a British accent remains a mystery to me.)

Don't let them start talking, or we'll never get them to shut up. A few polite beeps should be the limit of their audio communication abilities.

Holy ****! Kim-Jong Il is a freaking GUNDAM!!!! The similarity to the Nu Gundam (http://www.mahq.net/mecha/gundam/cca/rx-93.jpg) is frightening
They even make a reference to the hyper bazooka (an actual Nu Gundam weapon):
"Kim has made it clear that, if sufficiently threatened, he will not hesitate to use nuclear weapons or his arm-mounted HyperBazooka."

A note to all who don't know: The Onion is a parody paper which makes fun of, well, everything. So here, they are making fun of A) the seemingly Asian preoccupation with giant robots B) useless threats from Kim Jung Il and C) the seriousness of the wholse situation.

Now you know!

Robots all have British accents, it is their pre-ordained destiny. They will break free from their programming and run riot by saying "Tally ho!" and God Save the Queen!" at inappropriate moments! You fools, can't you see it? Its all coming true, just like the old man said!!!!!!!

Seeing as robots are NOT living....no, they do not have any rights whatsoever. We can GIVE them rights if WE choose, but they have no preordained rights like humans, as we are alive.
