How do you pronounce your nation name?
Optima Justitia
15-09-2005, 01:13
Post how you would like others to mentally or verbally pronounce the name of your nation. My nation name, Optima Justitia, has two acceptable pronunciations:
1. Latinate: AWP tih mah yus TIT ih ah ("yus" rhyming with puss and "ih" as in bit).
2. Anglicized: AHP tuh muh juhs TIH shee uh ("ah" as in mom and "uh" as in about or terminal).
I could use a more exact phonemic/phonetic transcription, but it would probably be harder for nonlinguists/nonphilologists to understand, so I won't.

Ahr-djeh-s(i)a.
I would like to use this space to clarify something: the country may have a female name, but I am male! I know, it was a poor choice - and it got worse when I chose the same name for use in forums... :headbang:

Wasn't there a poll? I believe it said your name was pronounced "Throat-warbler mangrove".
My nation's name is pronounced: Bob.
Keh-Jot. The Keh rhymes with the E in "everybody" and the Jot rhymes with "dot".
I pronounce mine:
Ruh-vay-uh.
But I've heard it pronounced:
Rav-EE-uh.
And once I heard it called:
RAVE-uh
Which do you think is correct?

My nation's name can only be said in proper Cajun accent:
Kay-roo-vay-lee-ah
If you have any accent other than a Cajun islander, please do not pronounce my nation's name as it would be an offense to my god and my people. :p

The sound can't be written properly, only heard but I'll give it a try.
It's like O but you open your mouth slightly more and form your lips in a kind of eggshape, and you lower your thounge a little. Add a little more pressure and there's the sound.

How I pronounce Bjørnøya:

Ø: the first sound in the word "earl" would be close enough (the sound before the "r")

This has been a secret, but the name is actually "inspired" by the phrase "I'll be gone". Doesn't mean I will be gone soon, though. ;)
