US normalize relations with Cuba already!

US Cuba policy is plain hypocritical.

First off, the cold war is over,
the cold war existed because the Soviet Union was supposedly
trying to take over the world.
The Soviet Union is gone, so they are obviously not trying to take
over the world.

2nd,
US policy towards China is trade trade trade. Make lots of money.
Yet it is common knowledge that there is by far great human rights abuses in China. So obvisouly the US does not care about human rights,
but making money.

so, why not normalize relations with Cuba?
Why not trade and make some money?
Just because some terrorists in Florida think they are
going to get their oligarchies back some day? ha. Fat chance.
Oligarchies are as scum as king and queens. Get over it.
That's not to say Fidel is right, just that the terrorists the US gov't
harbors in Fl are not either.

What you mean to say is normalise relations with Fidel. It doesn't appear that Fidel is in any hurry to do so either. I say screw it, it wouldn't change all that much.

Agreed.

Plus, economically... China > Cuba. By a huge ass margin. We don't get much out of trade with Cuba.

Still, I am free trade and wish everyone could get over themselves and just make business.

As a Florida resident, I know many Cubans who have lived under Castro, and his human rights issues leave much to be desired. I personally think it is not yet prudent to lift the embargo, for several reasons. One, Fidel Castro is one of the biggest Anti-American (claims to be anti-capitalist, which interprets into anti americanism in my book.) leaders out there. Second, were we to lift the embargo, that money would NEVER go to helping the people. It would go towards Castro's own political agenda, and as such if he were to have access to any available technology, he would rile things up not with America, but with countries in Central/South America as well. We all know of his relations to Che Guevara, from whom he learned everything he knows and even got his power. More later...chicken wings calling...

As an American, I can tell you that you are 100% right. The problem is neither political party wishes to alienate the votes of the millions of anti-Castro Cuban exiles (the "terrorists" you're referring to?) who control a sizable portion of the nation's electoral votes. (I won't try to explain the Electoral College, I'll let Wikipedia do that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_College should do it.)

My own view is that Castro doesn't suffer under the blockade, he simply takes what he wants from his people, so they suffer from extreme poverty. Thankfully, education and health care are free in Cuba (so it should be MUCH easier for a rich country like the USA to do that than Cuba) and the blockade merely punishes innocent Cubans.

On the other hand, if Castro were to improve human rights in Cuba and hold free and fair elections, the anti-Castro movement would lose steam and the US wouldn't have much of a case for maintaining the blockade.

That whole deal with harboring terrorists in FL, ummm, mod's please pardon this next statement. I dont think you know what the fuck you're talking about when you mention terrorists, cuba, and FL in the same goddamned sentence. Come to florida, see if u find any damn terrorists. As someone whos lived here all my life, I find that quite ignorant and offensive to downtalk the government for harboring terrorists when you dont have a goddamn source to back it up.

How dare they have weapons. Bastards. Every country should get rid of their weapons except for the US and France. Why France? cuz they wont use em, and why the US? because our system of gov will keep our higher ups from doin anything too damned stupid like invading countries without evi--shit.

If you are reffering to my comment, I highly suggest you read up on the Cuban Missile Crisis. Having Nuclear weapons 90 miles from Florida is something we got a little perturbed aboot.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Cuba, and Cuba-USA relations, once Fidel kicks the bucket. Thats one good thing about dictatorships or rule by cult of personality... they end.

IIRC, we had very few Missiles targeted at Cuba, if any. Most of our Nuclear Forces consisted of bombers. As did the Soviet Union's.

not until castro starts fellating us, or dies.

this isn't hypocrtitical because China is bigger than us, and Cuba isn't. we've kicked Cuba's ass several times. hell, Florida is ejaculating on Cuba as we speak.
