They're misinformed, but the majority are too stupid to desire not to be misinformed or even to know that they are misinformed.

Yes, but only because the majority of people everywhere are stupid. It's a human thing.

Nope, but I think that people who make sweeping generalisations about citizens of particular countries are.

I don't think as a whole we're stupid, but we are willfully ignorant at times and we continue to allow stupid, incompetent people run our government, which I'm certain makes us look stupid to the rest of the world.

Hey, calm down a little. I didn't mention you personally, I just pointed out that it's rather stupid to try and judge most of the population of a country based on general impressions from the media, or from meeting a few of that country's citizens.

Americans are a product of their society. So the question should be is american culture stupid. Im undecided, they may well have a genius long-term political agenda (at the end of the day america is the most powerful nation in the world) or they may be cruising towards oblivion with their slightly dubious foreign policies. Its a tought call.

Though do you not go outside and attempt to hold a conversation with people on the corner while waiting for the bus. My God the majority of the people are absolutely clueless about everything.

I don't think that the majority of Americans are really stupid, I think most of them just don't put any thought into anything, and lack commonsense.

Americans are no more stupid than any other people, but Americans have fallen prey to a culture that values trendy fashion, celebrity, and money over knowledge, so they've become willfully ignorant sheep consuming whatever's placed in front of them and following whatever shepard is wealthy enough to manipulate the media and attract their attention.

I should clarify my opinion a little: I don't actually believe it's stupid to hold opinions like that about people from particular countries. However, it is something to be avoided in my opinion. If you think most Americans are stupid, you would tend to treat those you meet as idiots, until they prove otherwise.

Having said that, you could just as easily say that most bus-users are clueless.

The unfortunate thing is that people actually take the time to make these polls. I consider many poeple to be stupid by my estimaiton. I take stupid to mean lacking common sense or the basic ability to think on your own, but i think many europeans are just as guilty of that as Americans. Many Europeans think Americans only do what people tell them to do. What makes you any different. You follow your governemnt. I think people need to take a good hard look at themselves before making any type of sweeping generalisation.

If you wanna play that game, sure I'll play.

1) I was just giving an example.
2) Nowhere did I say the person I was talking to was a bus-rider, for all you know it was the owner of White Castles (Whom I have met and he's stupid)

Exactly. Americans aren't so much stupid as incredibly lazy. If it isn't served up to them, they won't go looking for it.

It's not laziness, it's culture. In Europe the culture conditions people to expect more from their government, like guaranteed vacation days, free healthcare, etc. So the people put the time and effort into making sure their government doesn't renig on that contract. In the USA the government never made that contract. Vacation days and healthcare have traditionally been provided by the employer, therefore Americans spend more time and energy making sure that their employer will be wealthy enough to toss them a crumb.

Europeans don't care much about their employer but rather what their government is doing for them. Considering how hard Americans work at their jobs they might call you lazy for wasting time on politics instead of struggling to make money the same way you call them lazy for not keeping close tabs on politics.

Americans are no more stupid than any other people, but Americans have fallen prey to a culture that values trendy fashion, celebrity, and money over knowledge

and, in fact, most americans carry around with them a nearly encyclopedic knowledge of fashion or celebrities or sports or music or pop culture in general. we aren't stupid, we just are easily distracted and have bought into several trivially false cultural myths to give our lives meaning and direction in the capitalist class society we find ourselves in.

But I would classify that under being stupid. See, cause I make a difference between stupid and uneducated. One form of stupidity is the lack of desire to become educated and anything. Another form is to know the right thing yet do the opposite instead.

Let me clarify some currents ways Americans are stupid.

1) People actually believe that the army will give them a free ride through college. . . Those people are currently getting killed in Iraq.

2) A power tool actually had the label: Not intended as a dental device. . . That means someone actually tried it.

3) A people will pay $50 for a dress shirt that has a CK on its tag. . . when the exact shirt is at Target (minus the CK) for $10.
