Quick geography knowledge test

Have you heard of the following countries? I'm curious to see how many people are aware of their existence. This isn't to "make fun" of "obscure" countries; quite the contrary, it's to see to what degree people are aware of the world around them. It's not to shame people who haven't heard of them, either. It's just to establish a few statistics.

Simply copy/paste the list below, and indicate "Yes" or "No" next to each country, depending on whether you've heard of it or not.

Honduras
Micronesia
Zambia
Lesotho
Kiribati
Slovenia
Ecuador
Palau
Swaziland
Andorra
Albania
Botswana
Malawi
Tonga
Suriname
St Lucia
St Vincent & the Grenadines
Sao Tome e Principe
Turkmenistan
Azerbaijan
Bhutan
Eritrea
St Kitts & Nevis
Trinidad & Tobago
San Marino
Brunei
Bahrain
Oman
Vanuatu
Nauru
Namibia
Burundi
Kyrgyzstan
Qatar
Bangladesh
Myanmar
Comoros
Mauritania
Mauritius
Republic of the Congo (not the DR Congo!)

You can also test your geography here (http://www.lizardpoint.com/fun/geoquiz/), and post your scores.

I've heard of all of these countries.
Quite simple, because I've worked for an international telecom company. Every month it was neccesary to review the costs of telecom traffic to all existing countries on the world.

I had a very good grade in geography. (I'm also assuming that the Palau mentioned is the US protectorate that did not join with Micronesia sometime in the 70's. Memory fails me. The capital is something with a K... Kothor, Kroror, something...)

Possibly: at the moment it has moved to the 'I have certainly heard of it somewhere, but couldn't have stated that it was a country rather than a region or a city' category.

EDIT: I'm somewhat surprised at the amount of negative responses that Bahrain is getting.

Myanmar ... yes ( the nation formerly known as Cambodia? )

Myanmar was called Burma. Cambodia is still called Cambodia.

And there's nothing that precludes islands from being countries. Just ask Iceland, Cyprus, Malta or Cuba.

Don't you find it symptomatic that names of newly (newish) independent countries tend to stay the same in several languages?
Like Swaziland (I think in German it is spelled Swasiland - and only because Germans have a sound like z, but spelled like s).
On the other hand: Switzerland, La Suisse, Schweiz, Svizzera, Helvetorszag (or whatever in Hungarian), Elvetia (read: Elvetsia; that's in Romanian) etc.

But I'm not so crazy about geography, I'm just interested in political systems in the world. I even could tell you something about the party system in most of these countries ;-)

Now, here's a tricky one for you ppl:
How do you pronounce Kiribati?

As an aside, I knew this old pommy guy who was the tresurer for Kiribati for years before he retired and moved to NZ. He was also with the Gurkas in SE Asia during WWII. Fascinating bloke to talk to.

I had a very good grade in geography. (I'm also assuming that the Palau mentioned is the US protectorate that did not join with Micronesia sometime in the 70's. Memory fails me. The capital is something with a K... Kothor, Kroror, something...)

Quite right, and the capital is Koror.

Lesotho - Africa (I think within South Africa) YES

Correct. It's entirely surrounded by South Africa.

Andorra - Heard of it but not sure where it is. Africa? YES

Europe. Sandwiched between France and Spain.

Malawi - Heard of it put not sure where. Africa or SE Asia? YES
Tonga - Good rugby program. In the south pacific islands near Australia? YES
Suriname - Heard of it, no clue where it is YES

Correct on Tonga. Malawi is in Africa (a small, bizarrely shaped country in the south-east). Suriname is on the north coast of South America, and was formerly Dutch Guyana.

Sao Tome e Principe - I heard of it but no clue where it is YES
[...]
Vanuatu - I think islands in the pacific NOT SURE
[...]
Kyrgyzstan - One of former soviet Union countries in central asia? NOT SURE
[...]
Bangladesh - Poorest country in world, used to be east pakistan YES
[...]
Republic of the Congo (not the DR Congo!) - There is two of them, DR Congo was Zaire and this was the other that was just north, or did I mix them up. YES

Quite right on Vanuatu, Kyrgyzstan and the Congo. Sao Tome e Principe is the smallest country in Africa, in the Atlantic, off the north-western or central-western coast (I'm not entirely sure which). I think the poorest country in the world is actually Mozambique, but I could be wrong.

Huaqio, I'm impressed. :) I've heard of them all, obviously (I've heard of every [sovereign] country in the world), and I can place them all more or less, but I don't know nearly as many capital cities as you do.

Tonga - yes, from the world cup qualification

Unless you're from Oceania yourself, are you sure you're not getting it mixed up with Togo? Togo is making a big mark on the World Cup qualifications in Africa. Tonga, in Oceania... not. ;)

Now, here's a tricky one for you ppl:
How do you pronounce Kiribati?

KEE-REE-BAS. Roughly. :)

San Marino - Italy. Seriously, this is not a real country.

It is, really. It's the oldest surviving republic in the world, and predates Italy as a formally organised country. It's also a member of the UN.

Republic of the Congo (not the DR Congo!) - Did they rename it again?!

I could be wrong, but I think the Republic of the Congo was already called like that when the DRC was still being called ZaĂ¯re.

Suriname=yes but I don't think it exist any more

It does. See above.

Micronesia - is micronesia a country? i thought it was a region like australasia?

It's a country. The Federated States of Micronesia.

Lesotho - yes. Good ole King Mzwati and his thousands of brides(i think thats Lesotho, anyway, i know i have heard it)

It's Swaziland. :)

Turkmenistan - yes. Thats the place with the COMPLETELY bonkers leader, right? Turkmenbashi the great, he likes to call himself. Has a giant gold statue of himself in the capital, which revolves to catch the sun. Evil and insane but with an element of style

Quite right. Possibly the most insane leader on the planet. ;)

Bhutan - yes. Civil war at the moment isn't it? Or is that Nepal? One of the two.

It's Nepal. Bhutan, as far as I know, is peaceful right now.

Yes, I have heard of all of them, and if pressed could probably locate them all on a map. Then again, I have at some point or another been to well over half of them. I spent about 5 years trying to get a visa stamp in my passport for every country in the world... Of course at the time getting into some of the countries in the USSR was rather difficult and so I had to write some of them off.
Also technically some of those listed are not countries in the traditional sense. Some are protectorates (self governing (mostly), but still reliant on another country or confederation of countries ie: the Commonwealth) and one or two are Governances (well that's what they were called when I was at school, but that was some time ago) which have a governor to deal with local issues, but still recognises the government of another country as holding power in their Governance.

No you are right. Mind you I have always thought "Democratic Republic of..." is a misnomer, because it generally means "Corrupt communist dictatorship with no opposition because they have all been rounded up Repunlic of...". Well it does to my mind anyway...
And also: DRC was DRC for quite a while until it "became" Zaire.

Weird, but impressive. ;) Sounds like the kind of thing I'd do if I had the money. Some countries don't stamp your passport, though. I was very disappointed when they didn't stamp mine in Cuba.

No, I've only listed countries that are fully sovereign (and members of the UN, to boot). Being a member of the Commonwealth doesn't mean you're not a sovereign nation (even though many recognise the queen as their head of state).

Unless you're from Oceania yourself, are you sure you're not getting it mixed up with Togo? Togo is making a big mark on the World Cup qualifications in Africa. Tonga, in Oceania... not. ;)

I am interested in the American Samoan National team and therefore know their opponents. ogo is a former German colony in Africa, Tonga is a so small place in the pacific ocean, that one needs magnifying glasses on the globe (if it is shown at all)

Ah. I see.

Why American Samoa? Because it's the worst team in the world according to FIFA rankings? Or is it a personal reason?

Have you heard of the following countries? I'm curious to see how many people are aware of their existence. This isn't to "make fun" of "obscure" countries; quite the contrary, it's to see to what degree people are aware of the world around them. It's not to shame people who haven't heard of them, either. It's just to establish a few statistics.

Simply copy/paste the list below, and indicate "Yes" or "No" next to each country, depending on whether you've heard of it or not.

Here are the statistics based on the first three pages. I'll do some more when I have time.

There are only two countries for which a majority of you were sure you'd never heard of them: Nauru (58.8%), and Comoros (52.9%). Sao Tome e Principe comes close (47.1%).

Other "mysterious" countries include Kiribati (41.2% of you are sure you've never heard of it), Palau (likewise), Vanuatu (likewise), St Kitts & Nevis (35.3%), San Marino (ibid), Suriname (29.4%) and St Lucia (ibid).

Only 41.2% of you are sure you've heard of Nauru. The figure is 47.1% for Palau and Vanuatu.

Almost all of you have heard of Zambia, Ecuador, Swaziland, Andorra, Albania, Botswana, Trindad & Tobago, Namibia, Burundi, Qatar and Bangladesh.

I've heard of them all. But only a few of them are on my list of places to visit.
:)
P.S. Palau is the source of much mirth at our dinner table since this island nation is part of the 'coalition of the coerced' (Bush's allies in the invasion of Iraq. Palau doesn't have an army so Palauans join the U.S. military 'to see the world.' Still, I guess the US needs all the 'allies' it can find. ;)

Now on the quiz:

US - 131/150. My midwest is shaky and I can never remember what order the old south goes in.

Canada - 21/39. Not bad, considering I've never tried to learn its geography.

S. America - 26/39. Again, not too bad for my amount of study.

Europe - 81/111. Cripes! The ones I knew, I knew, but criminy, Estonia-Lithuania-Latvia don't even EXIST anymore...

Africa - 96/162. Not too shabby. Okay, fine, I sucked, but it's Africa. And I live in America. And am only in high school.

Australia - 18/24. But there were so few areas that with three tries, I was bound to click all of them.

Asia - 77/87. Yay. Where IS Brunei, though? And it'd have been easier to identify the western parts with a more extensive map.

Middle East - 75/87. Again with the yay, but again with the weird Stans that don't exist anymore...

C. America - 32/42. Much better than what I thought I'd get.

Caribbean - 30/66. Again I thought was going to totally flunk it.

World - 33/33. A total gimme quiz though.

I'm sure the people living there would be surprised to hear you say that. ;) All those countries do exist. In fact, they've only (re)gained their independence since the fall of the Soviet Union. All those you're referring to are recognised sovereign states, and members of the United Nations.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined the European Union in 2004.

Of course I have heard of all of them.

Looking at other answers, I start thinking that stereotype that Americans know only USA and Canada on world map, is really really true.

btw, I am really surprised that so few of them have heard of Nauru, this island is really exciting example of economy based on natural resources. Few years ago it had largest GDP per capita in the world.

I know all the countries. I also know where they are, but with the island states I may only be able to tell you the general area. Capital cities is where it gets tricky, and sub-national divisions (I know the states of India better than those of the US or the Chinese provinces, simply because I've actually been there). Now on the quiz:
Europe - 81/111. Cripes! The ones I knew, I knew, but criminy, Estonia-Lithuania-Latvia don't even EXIST anymore...

Asia - 77/87. Yay. Where IS Brunei, though? And it'd have been easier to identify the western parts with a more extensive map.

Middle East - 75/87. Again with the yay, but again with the weird Stans that don't exist anymore...

Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia DO EXIST as independence countries. They are now members of European Union expansion (EU-25)
Brunei situated on northern part of Borneo island surrounded by Malaysia state of Sarawak.
All the "weird -stans" DO EXIST; Turkmenistan for instance is one of important oil producers around Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan is very big country with abundant natural resources and host the site of Russian space launch center at Baikonur.Uzbekistan relies its economy on cotton and has approx.
25 million citizens. One of my best friend come from Kyrgyzstan. The poorest country of all the "weird -stans" is Tajikistan.

Honduras - yes
Micronesia - maybe... sounds like it's in the Pacific somewhere
Zambia - yes
Lesotho - yes. I get Lesotho and Swaziland confused, but I think it's Lesotho that borders only SA, whereas Swaziland borders Zambia too.
Kiribati - no
Slovenia - Get Slovenia and Slovakia confused. Both start with slov and end in a. Argh! Both formed after communist republics fragmented as well, even more confusing.
Ecuador - yes
Palau - no
Swaziland - yes
Andorra - boring little mountain country in the pyrennes
Albania - yes, has that cool double headed eagle on its flag
Botswana - yes
Malawi - yes, couldn't place it on a map though
Tonga - yes, same as above
Suriname - former colony of Holland?
St Lucia - yes
St Vincent & the Grenadines - yes, don't know where though.
Sao Tome e Principe - maybe?
Turkmenistan - This country is fascinating. You can get bottle of whiskey in bottles the shape of the dictators head. And he, the dictator, closed all the hospitals in the country except for the one in the capital so that his enemies wouldn't be able to get medical treatment. A Psychotic dictatorship if ever there was one. Such a class cultism he's built around himself though.
Azerbaijan - yes, made famous, or less obscure by Eddie Izzard's quest to mention it as often as possible in his comedy acts. :D
Bhutan - Tiny little monarchy on the border of India and China
Eritrea - Horrible war for independence from Ethiopia. Very bloody. :/
St Kitts & Nevis - yes, I think NS has their flag.
Trinidad & Tobago - yes
San Marino - yes, but not too sure about where it is. Western Meditarian somewhere
Brunei - yes, even the 'peasants' live like kings here. o.o
Bahrain - yep
Oman - yes
Vanuatu - no
Nauru - no
Namibia - My dad's friend helped fight for it's independence. If you study the country I think his name even comes up on some recomended reading (watching). Richard Pakleppa his name is. He's currently doing a documentary about the street kids of Angola.
Burundi - yes, I think.
Kyrgyzstan - There was a democratic revolution here. I've been told that it's not going to do much. 'A rose by any other name' type of thing.
Qatar - Base of operations for the Iraqi war, the US news stations seemed to pronounce its name strangely. "Kayytarr" or something.
Bangladesh - Anyone who lives is medium sized city in the UK MUST have heard of Bangladesh.
Myanmar - yus
Comoros - Isn't this island just of the coast of Madagascar, near Reunion?
Mauritania - Yes
Mauritius - Yes
Republic of the Congo (not the DR Congo!) - Borders the DR Congo, and The capitals are just across the Congo river from each other, Brazzavile and Kinshasa. During the end days of the Mobutu era some disabled people set up an import/export company between the two capitals. Whenever one of the cities were running low on one resource they'd hop on the ferry and ship it over to the other city. They managed to make this work because of a loophole in the laws which allowed disabled passenger to travel for free. That is cool.

Only four I haven't heard of. Not too bad :D

PS. A fair few of these places are dependencies, not countries :P

Are you american or what?! ;)

When I finished highschool, we often competed with friends in geography: knowing where each country exists on globe and its capital was basics competed just on basis of speed. The hard things where: currencies, longest rivers, largest lakes, and biggest mountains for different countries, comparing random countries by size, population, and even naming regions/states for largest countries (Russia, USA, etc.)

While I completely agree to you, that original poster should include few fake countries just for fun, I think people are more or less fair here.

Wrong on those, I'm afraid... Malawi isn't an island, Tonga is in the Pacific, Suriname is in South America, and Sao Tome e Principe is an island nation off the west coast of Africa. Not bad at all on the whole, though.

Right on all those counts... except the last bit! ;) They're all actual sovereign, independent countries, not dependencies.

Regarding Comoros, I knew as much as you do: that it's near Madagascar and Reunion. I've checked on a map, and it's actually north-west of Madagascar, so not all that near to RĂ©union.

I've heard of them all, and know where each one is. Though really, who needs to know about Palau? Or St. Lucia? Or Kiribati? A lot of those countries have less than a million people, insignificant economies, and are not desirable travel locations. In some cases, they are barely countries. Palau and Micronesia, for instance, were US territorites up until about fifteen years ago. Today, they rely on the US for defense, money, and most of their governments' budgets. But I really feel sorry for Nauru. At about 1,000 souls, they are the world's smallest independent republic.

I'm actually a she, but what's wrong with never having heard of it? has it been mentioned in the news or something?

I've heard of them all, and know where each one is. Though really, who needs to know about Palau? Or St. Lucia? Or Kiribati? A lot of those countries have less than a million people, insignificant economies, and are not desirable travel locations. In some cases, they are barely countries. Palau and Micronesia, for instance, were US territorites up until about fifteen years ago. Today, they rely on the US for defense, money, and most of their governments' budgets. But I really feel sorry for Nauru. At about 1,000 souls, they are the world's smallest independent republic.
And Australia dumps it's illegal immigrants there!

Micronesia is also a country in the Pacific apart of being an ethnic group and a language group.
Lesotho is surrounded by South Africa
Slovenia is in South Europe, just east of Italy.
Palau is north of Indonesia, east of Philippines, no way near Thailand.
Andorra is between Spain and France.
Sao Tome e Principe is off coast of Gabon, South of Nigeria
Burundi is in Africa, east of Zaire
Comoros is between Mozambique and Madagascar
Mauritania is in North West Africa, bordering Western Sahara which claimed by Marrocco
Democratic Republic of Congo is Zaire.(the bigger one)
Afterall not bad ;)
