Never heard of them...will check them out now.

I typically don't collect vinyl either, unless I can't find it on CD. CD's are cheaper. And I can't listen to vinyl on the train.

Spiderbait (a decent cover of Black Betty)

Wow, someone outside Australia and New Zealand that knows them. That cover was pretty cool, but their earlier work is much better. They're way past their heyday.

L7 (wait, aren't they them wierd lesbians?)

Hahaha, pretty much.

also you suck for not mentioning Pink Floyd (UBER LEGEND x infinity)

Ah, oops. I have trouble listening to them sometimes, though- it's not something I can just put on, I have to be in the mood for it. Good, though.

I'm bored. So it's time for another music thread! :D

So, which of these bands do you like? Any glaring omissions you think i'd like? Suggest away...

Think these bands are shit? Argue away.... :p

Nirvana - Like them, but a little over-rated. Mudhoney were the first grunge band imo.
Led Zeppelin - Like Nirvana, good but over-rated. Only just managing to be able to listen to their music now that I'm away from all the metal/bodgy/westie type dicks who think music began and ended with LZ and so do nothing else but play it 24/7.
Rage Against the Machine - not bad, but limited. Can only handle listening to one or two songs together. Then they start blurring into one another. Great music to work out to, though.
Dead Kennedys - very good band. Great combination of hard punk, sarcasm and political ranting. Like them!
Black Flag - didn't really get into them much, so won't make a comment about them
Screaming Trees - see my answer for Black Flag
the Pixies - very cool band.
Refused - going to have to check these guys out.
Tool - One of the bands of the nineties. Awesome band, awesome live too.
A Perfect Circle - ehh...Good first album, but that latest one of anti-war covers - yeuch. Certainly reduced this band's overall rating
The Doors - see my answer for Led Zepp. Except Page is way better than Morrison.
The Velvet Underground - Good band and very influential. When I'm in the mood (mainly lazing about on a warm Autumn day) I enjoy listening to these guys.
Weezer - Super band. Love their slightly cheesy garage music
Smashing Pumpkins - good, but over-rated and usually only a couple of songs on each album that stand out. Rest just blur into each other.
Candlemass - another band I'll have to check out.
The Kinks - Used to enjoy these guys when I was young, but haven't listened to them for yonks
Spiderbait - ehh, so so.
The White Stripes - vastly over-rated, imo.
Faith No More - see comment above.
Stone Temple Pilots - yeuch.
Sonic Youth - Never really got into them. Don't know why. Just one of those things. Don't dislike them, just don't really like them.
Black Sabbath - unfortunately became viewed as a parody for heavy metal. Not that bad, really.
Kyuss - see comment for Stone Temple pilots
Queens of the Stone Age - see above
Monster Magnet - have to check these guys out
Fu Manchu - ehh, not really interested in them
Fireball Ministry - see comment for Monster Magnet
Sleep - see above
Candlemass - see comment for Fu Manchu
Soundgarden - some great songs, but overindulged and started believing their own hype
Alice In Chains - yeuch
Mudhoney - One of the bands of the 80s. 'Superfuzz bigmuff' still a classic that gets played regularly in my place.
Babes in Toyland - good, but never really got into them
L7 - overrated and undertalented
Butthole Surfers - THE band of the 80's, along with Big Black.
The Clash - best punk band of the 70's
The Sex Pistols - started listening to them again after years away. Nice nostelgic trip for me, but don't know if anyone new would see anything in them
Stiff Little Fingers - another great punk band from the 70s. Opening rift to 'Alternative Ulster' gets me every time even after all these years.
The B-52's - never understood what people saw in them
The Birthday Party - great band, loved Blixa Bargeld's voice (hence my liking Einstürzende Neubauten)
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - used to really like them, but gone off them in the last couple of years. Can't say why. Just decided I didn't really like Nick Cave's voice and felt he's trying too hard to sound menacing and strange.
Offspring - yeuch. Overrated pap
The Hives - ehhh, take it or leave it.
Sepultura - see above
Soulfly - need to check them out
Hatebreed - see above
Placebo - see my comment for the Hives
The Cure - overrated and never could understand why people loved them so much
R.E.M - Can handle in small doses. Songs tend to blur into one another after a while. Usually at least one very good song per album.
Muse - see comment for the Hives
Radiohead - really like these guys. Another 'band of the 90's'. Awesome live too, btw.
System of a Down - System of a shite more like
Machine Head - ehh..
Public Enemy - love their early stuff, but definitely a band that should have broken up after the 3rd or 4th album
The Datsuns - see my comment for White Stripes
Deftones - ehh.
Everclear - yeuch
Foo Fighters - nice poppy music. Happily mindless and instantly fogettable.

phew, that'll do...

Phew...that took a long time!

Sadly that is the only one available unless you want to order a CD. That is up there from the premiere of the soundtrack it was on (as it is they weren't thrilled we released it online).

Or I can zip 'em up and send them to you if you're willing.

I'd like to hear something more upbeat; maybe some of the hardcore influenced stuff? (as your main page says, "daymonthyear's music has been described as many different buzz-words, but in truth is a mesh of styles...from prog-rock to hardcore and just about anything else that they can get their hands on.")

My guess is backlash. Led Zeppelin is one of those bands I have trouble being objective about. I really can't understand how someone who likes rock and roll could dislike Zeppelin.

I hate people who dislike bands simply because they're really popular. That better not be the reason.

Well, I don't think it's fair to go that far. I am at least willing to give people the benefit of the doubt that they are being honest. I'm just saying that if you hear all the time that a band is the greatest thing ever, and if their songs are as overplayed and overexposed as Zeppelin's are, then backlash can set in.

I can understand most of them, but these are rather strange friend.

Sandinista! is a fundamentally flawed LP, certainly, but over its sprawling six sides there is a depth and a variety which is not present on their other LPs. You would not believe the ludicrous amount of bootlegs, alternative versions, rough mixes, unreleased tracks and the like that I have accumulated by The Clash, yet their humongous triple experimental LP remains my favourite.

The Who-Sell out is an LP where the band are still young, and although not every track is a resounding success it has its gems - I Can See For Miles being an obvious one, and the oft-overlooked experiment in playing guitar to a reversed backing track, and then reversing the guitar that is Armenia, City In The Sky. However, this uneasy mix of stunning tracks and less finished pieces is repeated throughout nearly all of their LPs. I could equally well have said Who's Next, but would then have to justify the existence of the Entwistle tune there. Same with Quadrophenia - another mix of the quality and the bland. I have a certain prejudice against the sound of live rock LPs - I prefer to keep live rock as a live experience and LPs as studio products...

Van Morrison-Its Too Late To Stop Now - having said that I then come to a live LP, but I don't particularly consider it a rock one, rather a rhythm and blues one. Astral Weeks just doesn't do it for me, whereas the Gloria/Here Comes The Night on side 4 of this Lp does set me on fire.

Beach Boys-Smiley Smile - the track 'Heroes & Villains. Next.

The Replacements-Stink - straight and to the point. Incredibly focused. A fantastic early hardcore LP, even though it is standardly viewed as a punk LP. I could have gone for Sorry, Ma... but Stink just holds my attention better. I lose interest in them after their third LP.

Nirvana - easily the best band ever.
Led Zeppelin - overrated.
Rage Against the Machine - worst vocalist ever. Nice lyrics, though.
Dead Kennedys - good, but not great, though they have some great songs.
Black Flag - eh. I like them, but they're not great.
Screaming Trees - One of the 5 best Seattle bands (and that's saying something.)
the Pixies - good, have a few great songs. But Black Francis irritates me.
Refused - heard of, but haven't heard.
Tool - good
A Perfect Circle - good, but not as good as Tool.
The Doors - Not too familiar with. Seem to be a little overrated though, from what I've heard.
The Velvet Underground - Good, while not great, influential in a good way.
Weezer - First two albums were good, music quality dropping a bit.
Smashing Pumpkins - 2nd best band ever.
The Kinks - Good, I'd like to hear more.
Spiderbait - I've only heard the album that's been released here. Tonight Alright
The White Stripes - Listenable, and unique, I'll give them credit for that.
Faith No More - Underrated.
Stone Temple Pilots - See Weezer, except it's their first 3 albums.
Sonic Youth - Underrated.
Black Sabbath - See Velvet Underground.
Kyuss - Heard of, haven't heard anything by.
Queens of the Stone Age - Okay. I have Songs For the Deaf, but that's mostly because Dave Grohl and Mark Lanegan are on it.
Monster Magnet - have at least one great song ("Negasonic Teenage Warhead") and one awful song ("Space Lord").
Fu Manchu - heard of, but nothing by.
Fireball Ministry - I enjoy the album that I have.
Sleep - I really enjoy the album that I have.
Candlemass - Underrated.
Soundgarden - Good, but not great.
Alice In Chains - Good, but not as good as Soundgarden.
Mudhoney - the 3rd best Seattle band.
Babes in Toyland - the best all female band.
L7 - Great, but not as great as Babes In Toyland.
Butthole Surfers - Great, except for Weird Revolution.
The Clash - Good, but overrated.
The Sex Pistols - Good, but overrated.
Stiff Little Fingers - Heard of, but nothing by. On my list of CDs to buy.
The B-52's - Have some good songs.
The Birthday Party - Heard of, nothing by. What do they sound like?
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Listenable, but not great, from what I've heard.
Offspring (Old stuff *only*) - Great.
The Hives - Good, not great.
Sepultura - Good, not great. Influential in a good way.
Soulfly - Dislike, because of the vocals.
Hatebreed - I like what I've heard. On my list of CDs to buy.
Placebo - See Weezer (first two albums great, went downhill from there.)
The Cure - Good, not great. Influential in a good way. (I'm saying that a lot, aren't I?)
R.E.M - Great. One of the 10 best bands ever.
Muse - Heard of, but nothing by.
Radiohead - Peaked with "Creep". Declined steeply with OK Computer but rebounding ever so slightly.
System of a Down - Good, but overrated.
Machine Head - First three albums good, downhill from there.
Public Enemy - Best rap group.
The Datsuns - Never heard of.
Deftones - Have one good song, the rest listenable.
Everclear - First three albums good, downhill from there.

A band that get worse and worse as time goes on: their LPs chart the chronological descent in hideous mediocrity of a once-great band. Start with Inflammable Material, then pick up Nobodys Heroes and Go For It. Stop at that point.

Nirvana
Alright, certainly influential for a lot of people. Over before they had a chance to grow beyond the genre they were born with, I'd say.

Led Zeppelin
Very tough to argue against. No fear of the epic when the world ran on three-minute singles.

Rage Against the Machine
Powerful, energising. In some cases a little paranoid, but nonetheless equipped to rock.

Dead Kennedys
Amusing yet caustically relevant on politics.

the Pixies
If you need a way into a hip girl's pants, this might just be it. I like em anyway.

Tool
Innovative and creepy.

The Doors
Drugs in music form!

The Velvet Underground
crap. Running out of time. From here on in it's yea or nay. Yea.

Weezer
Yea.

Smashing Pumpkins
Yea for the most part, slid into nay eventually.

The Kinks
Yea

The White Stripes
Yea in a nay sort of way

Black Sabbath
Yea

Queens of the Stone Age
Yea

Monster Magnet
a Big Yea for bringing back the Sci-Fi.

Butthole Surfers
Yea. They had me at "Hairway to Steven".

The Clash
Yea

The Sex Pistols
Nay

The B-52's
Yea when no one's looking.

Offspring (Old stuff *only*)
Yea

The Hives
Yea

The Cure
Yea

R.E.M
A resounding Yea that probably saved the eighties and early nineties for me and several others.

Radiohead
Yea

System of a Down
Nay

Deftones
Yea I think.

Everclear
Yea, unless I'm forced to listen for more than 20 minutes. Then I start to wonder what heroin is like. Can't say why.

Foo Fighters
Yea

Pink Floyd
Yea

Hendrix
Yea

And a few more Yeas.

U2, Jim's Big Ego, Blue Oyster Cult, Neil Young, David Bowie, The Tea Party, The Tragically Hip, Mr. Bungle, The Flaming Lips, and Devo.

The Hives (Good, but terrible live)

Whoa, first time i've heard anyone say that. I like them purely as a live band - they were brilliant...their recorded stuff doesn't really do it for me.

Public Enemy (heard of...are they not a rap group? hate rap music)

Yes, but they're a rarity in that they're a good rap group.

What about Jeff Buckley???

Unfamilliar with his work...
