My crappiest gig ever

Legless Pirates

Well the audience liked it, but I felt really bad anyway

I play bass guitar and I hadn't practised much, because we hadn't rehearsed for 3 months. We played 2 sets of an hour and halfway the first set I got blisters on the tips of my index and middle finger.

So I played a few songs with my ring finger only, which caused another blister on that one.

The entire 2nd set I played with a pick.....And I never play with picks. I just can't handle them too well. It was the fifth time or so I played with a pick and I played an entire hour with it. I missed so many notes and at times I just had to finger the strings. The pain. The pain.

I totally forgot to put on a show and run around and do other silly stuff. For the last song I actually forgot to retune (the song before was played in drop C#) because I was just feeling bad about fucking up so many times.

Bah. :(

Sounds like ya got lazy, and your calluses got soft.

Tsk tsk.

Try rehearsing Pink Floyd's "The Wall", in its entirety, for two and a half months.

That stinks. I just recently joined a band playing bass, the other night was our first practice actually. I haven't played a show myself, but I think our first one will be alright.. The first one with me, anyway. Haha.

Just play more, your fingers will roughen up a bit and it won't be nothing anymore.

But yeah, go Bass! Woooh.

If you had your arm chopped off at the elbow....maybe.

I still say having to do "the Wall"for two months or so, was worse.

All you gotta do is make fun of your mistakes in between song dialogue and all will be well. Use some swearing and the crowd probably will still love ya.

I'm not going to get into a lot of advice because 1) you probably know what I'd tell you and 2) I don't play with a band and have never done so. Hell, I don't even think I can sing and one of my musician friends disagrees with me, but that's another matter.

But I'd think playing a musical instrument such as guitar or bass is like any repetitive motion skill. If you get away from playing, whether it's with your band or on your own, you're going to need to get back into shape before you play live. That's why NFL teams play preseason games: To get themselves back into game shape after not playing for several months. College and high school teams usually do scrimmages for that reason. They don't just jump in off the street and play a regular season game.

Perhaps if you started out small and built up knowing when your first gig is, that might get you used to the rigours of playing.

I once played an acoustic guitar at a karaoke venue since they had it there. I think it was a steel guitar IIRC. Anyway, I got terrible blisters because I was trying to play without a pick (like I carry a pick around every day). I finally resorted to using a quarter as a substitute for a pick.

Actually, there is a difference. In mid-1977, he could actually carry a few tunes (listen to their Live in Trondheim CD from the Kiss This double album). That was before he could really fund his addiction.

Well, he was a very good friend of John's, not just some fan. They all thought he'd actually learn to play very well, but they didn't think he'd become such a junkie. Sucks, eh?

Are you sure it was him playing? Have you seen 'Filth and the Fury' doco? In it they said alot of the time Steve Jones would play both his and Sid's lines. Jonesy was/is a pretty damn good guitarist - one who's quite under-rated.

Anyway, back to Legless:
Did you take the opportunity at the end of a song to yell out in a fake Liverpudlian accent: "I've got blisters on my fingers!!!". If not, shame on you.

Nah --- I'm talking about their live shows, not their recordings. Jonesy did play all the basslines, but were later taken out in favor of Glen Matlock's (much better) ones.

And to LP: Do an easy song to loosen up... Blitzkrieg Bop and Where Eagles Dare are great for that.

Real World, In A Free Land, Something I Learned Today, Newest Industry, Turn On The News, Celebrated Summer, Terms of Psychic Warfare, Books About UFO's, Makes No Sense At All, I Don't Know For Sure, Eiffel Tower High, These Important Years, Could You Be The One, and Ice Cold Ice.

Those are their best, in my opinion.

Hm, possibly. But, it just fits. They have a really eclectic sound, and his voice just goes with it.

I like Grant Hart's (he's the drummer) voice more, though.

The first side of Nova Mob's LP Last Days Of Pompeii is worth a listen or two, but despite some great tunes it is a very uneven album.

Tons of Dutch bands, I'll give you that. But I bet (say this in high sanctimonious tones) that I know lots of good Kiwi bands you've never heard of. So double there with a boosucks thrown in for good measure. ;)

Speaking of which, do yourself a favour and get hold of a copy of AK79 (a compilation of 1970s NZ punk bands) and Toy Love's "Cuts with knives". It's just been released. Toy Love WERE the definitive NZ punk band of the late 70's/early 80's. They only released one album which was crap due to the cheap production. But last year someone found the original masters and redid it, with a much better bass line. Listen to 'Pull down the shades' and dare to say it's not one of the best punk songs ever recorded. I saw the singer (Chris Knox) perform it once and it was even better live.
If you can't find it, pm me and we can set up a time for you to take them off me. I'm on Limewire and Shareaza (though haven't been using either much as of late).

The Gordons were later, mid 80s. So that still leaves Toy Love as kings of the 70's punk era.

Ah, that's why they released their first 7" in 1980 then... I know New Zealand isn't that far away from the International Date Line, but I didn't realise that they also numbered their years in a different order to everybody else.
